Phil Browns comment on Peter Ridsdale

the car with the square stearing wheel, what was the Triumph version of the Ambassador?

You thinking of the TR7? Or the Austin-Morris Princess?

Had a twin carb Dolomite myself. Because I couldn`t afford a Stag, which would have blown up anyway.

The allegro had the square steering wheel, its no fucking wonder the japs had to come over here to show us about cars, they were abysmal lumps of rust.

I learned to drive in an Allegro in 1975 - imagine my shock when I purchased a Vauxhall Viva only to find it had a ROUND steering wheel.

My boss used to lend me his Dolomite Sprint , often at weekends ( he preferred his wifes Rover) - my lord that was quick - shouldnt have been allowed anywhere near the beast.

The Allegro was replaced, in that niche, by the Maestro, which did have a round steering wheel, but had an annoying voice. ( First car with a voice synthesizer).

We are still talking of PNE, and using the cars as an anology aren`t we? 🙂

Later versions of the Allegro did have a round steering wheel. I remember owning one 30 years or so ago. Leaked like a sieve, handled appallingly. Truly the worst car I have ever owned. However, I do have a lasting loyalty to BL despite the utterly shite cars they produced.....the analogy with PNE following.

I think the Maestro is the car that most resembles Westleys tenure, brought in to replace the crap left from previous years, offered a glimpse into a new era (the voice box) but was found to be a gimmick, yet the replacement was in fact even worse, and the competition improved to leave it stranded!

Well, Westley seems to give us Morris-un`s to doubt that this Heralds a new dawn. I Riley doubt him at times. But I suppose even a draw today could be considered a Mini victory.

You sussed me out man, once I got the old girl started she purred like a cat, the oil leaked a lot as I started to accelerate, tweaked her points and cleaned the manifold.X reg. she was, when I couldnt get her started she relied on battery power alone.

Never got the old exhaust pipe sorted though - messy job , better left to the experts.

Imagine that focus group at BL
A capstan smoke filled room full of 67 year old tweed suited stick in the muds, in walks the new upstart clint ball breaker - I've an idea he says, mumble mumble grumble from the main party
Square steering wheels - that's the future
Mumble mumble from the board
And Lo we get a square steering wheel which turns out to be useless, a bit like when brown suggested we take on Ashbee
