Matchday Thread PNE v Leicester City - 29/04/24 - KO:8PM - Championship

I don't think people are unaware it's the same, we just don't think that just because it happens at EPL level means it's justified at Championship level too.

I literally said the system is terrible, I'm not justifying it at all. I'm simply pointing out that the second division isn't a fair playing field because the division above isn't. Removing parachute payments doesn't solve the issue. Just like the implementation of FFP hasn't solved the problems.

Then you're confusing me. Are you in favour of scrapping them or not?

The way I read this conversation is people rightly pointing out Parachute Payments are unfair, but then you're saying don't scrap them because the entire system is unfair. Should we not bother asking to be fairer, even if we understand it wouldn't be 100% fair? I personally don't want to let perfection be the enemy of good.

Scrap them, providing you can find a better alternative to narrowing the gap between the Premier League and promoted Championship clubs.

Even if they were scrapped, what's stopping a promoted side not spending, getting relegated, then spending all that Premier League TV money?

Of course for a fairer opportunity for all football clubs, to rise through the football pyramid, scrap parachute payments.

However if Risfail was still sat at the controls of a Premiership club would he be saying scrap parachute payments ?

From what I'm reading it's yet another Leicester City, or insert any franchise relegated club, trying to base an argument on a flawed system, when clubs get promoted to the premier league there should be sufficient revenue to complete in that league without overspending and relying on parachute payments which in effect reward failure, do clubs relegated from the championship to league one get any form of parachute payments, nope they have to suck up the loss in income and try to get promoted.

They do - although granted, they are considerably smaller:

"The EFL also operates a Parachute Payment system within the EFL Leagues and the National League. From the 2016-17 season onwards payments are:

Clubs relegated from the EFL Championship receive 11.1% of the Basic Award payment to Championship clubs for one season.

Clubs relegated from EFL League One receive 12.6% of the Basic Award payment to League One clubs for one season.

Clubs relegated from EFL League Two receive 100% of the equivalent Basic Award payment made to League Two clubs in the first year following relegation, and 50% of the equivalent Basic Award payment made to League Two clubs in the second year following relegation.
"

60+ years, supporting the Whites, some good times, play-offs, 64 cup final, and we were half decent back battling for survival in the 80's and came through it all. Now we are stagnant, stuck with the awful Ridsdale, not a bloke I could get to like, and now beside him, we have Lowe. Next season, I will still use the forum, as I can't get to games I have to use a PC, Radio or other methods to keep updated and sometimes follow games and footballcrazy, when he is well.

Next season I am going to stop looking for match-day lives whilst RL is in charge, and it is time that PR moved on too, he is way past his sell by date. Anyway, next season might just change dramatically if rumours are to be believed. Let us hope so, here's to the future and the long awaited journey to the top division.

Parachute payments are there to ensure promoted teams can risk investing a bit to try and stay up.They are literally guaranteed upon promotion.
Surely..........? they are designed for the 3 relegated Clubs to retain the core of their squad , payable when they get relegated, in order to support that ( all 3 of the 3 clubs ) club in its efforts to either retain their key-squad members who might otherwise leave to maintain their wage. Because the Club now doesn't get the same level of income it previously did from the 3 streams ( PL itself, Crowd income , SKY ) - it knows it has to 'cut it's cloth' etc. So in relation to the players- if
it was in their contract to be paid a reduced wage upon relegation, the Parachute Payment money would be useful to top-up that wage to its previous level. Because the 3 relegated Club are making less money to keep those players

It's rewarding Failure.

The exact same hardships PNE feel, is exactly how Leicester, Leeds, Southampton, Sheff United, Forest, Luton, Burnley etc feel about the Premier League.
Hardly. A Club has to go up and ( nearly always ) bounces straight back down in order to get P.P.'s. No prizes for spotting the odd one out of the list . Leicester shouldn't ever have come down but you had Brendan Rodgers under which LC had previously two finishes at 5th position & one at 8th position.

What's that got to with quote, "promoting teams can risk investing a bit to try & stay up".

Rather, it's rewarding failure & keeping a 'Closed Shop' a 'Closed Shop'.

It's rewarding the relegated Clubs so they can invest a bit to keep their high wage earners.
PP's go to the bottom 3 .

If the subject is the amount of monetary reward given to the promoted three going up to the Prem - I suppose we could call them
" Promotion Payments" ?

Parachutes literally give someone a 'softer landing'....

But the "Closed Shop" part of the Premier League is not the relegated clubs. Otherwise how can sides like Ipswich, Luton, Blackpool, Wigan, Bolton etc, experience League 1 and the Premier League within the same decade?

The closed shop of the Premier League is the "Big 6", how many times have one of those been relegated? Fundamently they're "Promotion payments" in a sense, you only qualify for then upon promotion to Premier League, but that's neither here or there.

I don't like the Parachute Payment model, but it's like complaining about a splinter on an amputated thumb. The problem you want to address, the inequality between Clubs, comes about as a result of decisions made much higher in the food chain.

Would removing parachute payments reduce Manchester City and the Top 6's dominance? No, so you're not solving the issue at all.

Between Blackburn Rovers and Leicester City winning the top flight, how many different teams have won promotion to the Premier League? 20? 30? The bottom half of the Premier League is not a closed shop, but the top is. That's where you have to start, and solve that problem.

If PNE go up, you will be complaining about the exact same things you're now, but you'll be replacing Leicester/Leeds/Southampton with other names.

Yeah no disparity at all there is there?

Unless the FA stop bowing down to the big boys this will continue to happen. Especially when you consider Leeds only had 3 years in the top flight.
Another 3 years and currently everybody's favourite underdog, Ipswich Town, will receive the same complaints if relegated, because of the prem money advantage. Pointing the finger at individual clubs is a waste of time.

How you can genuinely talk about a "Two tier Championship" and not realise it's the same in the Premier League is beyond me. Do you think that's because you haven't experienced the league above?

The exact same hardships PNE feel, is exactly how Leicester, Leeds, Southampton, Sheff United, Forest, Luton, Burnley etc feel about the Premier League.
Wrong.
Parachute payments are there to ensure relegated clubs don’t go bankrupt.
For example, Leeds went down with players on obscene wages and getting parachute payments help cover that.
I dont agree with it as clubs should spend within yout means.
You get money when you come up anyway - the play off final is the richest final on earth. You get parachute payments when you come down. Parachute payments have absolutely nothing to do with going up?

Typical patronising bollocks from you. ‘Do you think that’s because you haven’t experienced the league above?’ No it’s just bloody common sense. Something that you clearly lack.

Parachute payments encourage promoted clubs to spend more, after promotion, than they would if they didn't exist. Knowing that the contracts they're offering after promotion will be supported by the pillow of parachute payments.
If this wasn't the case, then first year promoted clubs would get relegated even more often that they do and the top flight would become even more of a closed shop than it is now.
My comment wasn't patronising, I'm just emphasising the point that you're only looking at this from the standpoint of the Championship. I've seen many complain about parachute payments and no other suggestion had been made besides scrapping them. How on earth does scrapping parachute payments bridge the gap between Ipswich and Man City? It doesn't.
Until you fix the problems at the top of the pyramid then nothing will change. The FA are too scared of the big 6.

Mid table PL clubs are at an inherent disadvantage to the 'Big 6'.
Relegation battling PL clubs are at an inherent disadvantage to mid table PL clubs.
Mid table Championship clubs are at an inherent disadvantage to relegated PL clubs,
Promoted League 1 clubs are at an inherent disadvantage compared to mid table championship clubs....

See my point? This happens at all levels. The idea that removing parachute payments solves this is pretty laughable and lacks "common sense" as you say.

Parachute payments are a symptom of the problem not the cause.
