Matchday Thread PNE v Southampton | 02.05.26 | KO 12:30 BST | Championship

Don't talk wet.
He's got a point Hunter.
The manager, whether he's here or not next season has spoke ( or be it a while ago now) about a mentality problem.
I think that includes some of our fanbase.
If there was ever a term of phrase that needed banning amongst our fanbsse, it would be " overachieving"
We've achieved next to fuck all in 60+ years now.
That is a fact.
So let's not be just head down and accepting that yet another mid table finish is just worthy of a lazy shrug your shoulders apathy type of reaction

Its the end of the season, and applauding the efforts of your mid table team is hardly offering them a blowjob and a new 5 year deal, it's some basic respect between fans and players.

A game that basically summed up the season. Just happy to be at the end of it. Part of me thinks we should part ways with Heckingbottom, but part of me thinks with new money maybe it might change.

My care for next season entirely depends on this takeover. I'll still turn up to every home game, but whether I really care about the final results of the game depends on this takeover going through.

For the sake of the fanbase we really need change.

Not quite sure I can show respect a team who have downed tools since the start of January but each to their own on the staying to applaud

It's simplistic bullshit to act like there's not been any effort. There's been plenty, some of the players just aren't that good.
Funny that those same players (Armstrong aside) got us to third in the table in the first half of the season and probably finished 18/19th on the second half of the season.

I mean I agree most of them aren't good enough but I do feel that there is some deep ingrained acceptance of mediocrity that is rampant within this club and to simply say the players aren't could enough could also be seen as simplistic

Dobbin & Devine have been a joy we won't go anywhere as a club untill we can start signing players of their quality. Moran Offiah & Small look good signings our Goalkeeper is the best in championship and easily our best signing but the rest are average to league one.
We are where we are every season because we don't have the right owners and the right management until that changes we stay as we are or worse we get relegated....

Storey Lindsay and Hughes surely 6 years of the 3 amigos is more than enough .
I said to one of the guys we sit with at half time, "it's the year 2065, and Preston North End line up with a back three of Jordan Storey, Liam Lindsay and Andrew Hughes."

Disappointing way to sign off. The key metric as so often is how many of the passes we made were to players in space and already moving as opposed to little short tip-tap balls to players standing still or lofted punts forward that almost inevitably were won by an opponent. We need to learn to get the ball on the ground and play forward passes to players who don't have to stand there waiting for it to arrive.

Are we going to do that with Hecky in charge? I don't know but we aren't going to do it without half-a-dozen or so new, younger, fitter, faster players than we have now. So no point at all even considering hanging on to any of the soon to be out-of-contract players Brady, Lewis, Potts if he hasn't signed a new deal. The same is the case for Lindsay though he has played well in his last few matches and I think we have to be realistic Hughes who is simply not going to get any faster. Thompson and Smith have been stopgaps with neither anywhere near what is required for a team that wants to challenge for promotion. Keane has effectively been gone for half the season. Personally I just don't see that Whiteman justifies being captain - he is a supporting player at best not a leader - and maybe it is time for him to move on as well.

So a core of continuity for next season might be Iversen, Offiah, Storey, Gibson, Valentin, Vukcevic - who has been very good lately, Small, McCann, Moran and Osmajic. Of the loanees this season it would, of course, be great to sign Devine and I think Jebbison would be a worthwhile investment. If as rumoured Armstrong could come back for another loan spell that would be superb. As for Dobbin well if Mr Zedan does take over he surely cannot be unaware of what he can bring to the team.

That would leave us needing at the least an agile left-sided defender, a ball-winning central midfielder and a targetman striker. But if next season is to marl a new era then some ruthless pruning of the squad is needed right now.

Right, but we were never close to looking like we deseved to be there. The luck was always going to run out, you can't rely on worldies all season!

I agree, on the whole but our keeper is good but nowhere near the best in this league

Nah, the exodus from many fans on the 3rd goal pretty much summed up how people have felt about this latest 2nd half of season capitulation to me.

Not a bad performance really, although definitely felt they had a couple of extra gears to shift into had they been playing for something.

Hopefully the last time we see some of the stalwarts. Storey was horrendous, couldn’t win a header against Stewart, never got within 5 yards of Scienza. It’s insane he and Potts are still starting games on that right hand side
