Rio Ferdinand

Rio Ferdinand

Difficult to say. He is definitely a twat though.

Nice plug for his testimonial game on there...I sincerely hope he's giving his share of the proceeds to charity.

I know that mental health is a serious issue on here, but does anybody actually believe him?

Without putting too fine a point on it, he's proved himself to be a lying twat many times in the past - I'd hate to think that he was using the torment of others in order to publicise BT Sport. 🙄

Sadly, you raise a very astute point.

In view of the sympathy that certain celebrities have received in relation to depression and mental health...... How many others are going to abuse this illness to further their own ends?

Like you say, some of these non-entities that currently inhabit our tv screens (TOWIE, MIC etc) will do anythign to get their name in the paper. How long before we see people from there spouting that they have depression for sympathy and money?

Saying that though who would have thought Gary Speed had depression or mental health issues until it was too late?

Perhaps Rio does have issues or maybe he doesn't only he and his family/friends will know for sure, but to say people should be open and honest about mental health and then slate someone for being open and honest is a little strange from my point of view.

Personally I don't like Rio as a person ever since the missed drugs test, but he has managed to have a decent career!

Nowhere in the article does he say he was depressed, or had depression.

He uses the words "I was in a depressive state"... but to me, that means he felt low, as most of us would when so injured you can't pick your kids up (let alone play professional football).

Looks like a load of Sun hype to me.

I don't much like Rio... but there is nothing wrong or insidious about that interview.

EDIT In fact, thinking about it now.. the title of the thread should be "The Sun" - then a discussion as to whether the newspaper is misusing mental health issues in order to make money.

Just because Rio Ferdinand earns a lot of money it does not mean he is immune to having depressed feelings. When I was earning a quite significant salary it was the most lonely and miserable time of my life because I never really knew who was genuine and who was just hanging on for a free ride. A lot of people mock situations like Ferdinand because he's high profile and the general public simply cannot relate to being in that position, with the additional pressures and trust issues it brings.
