Running away from Mental Illness

Wiki.

`Media coverage relating to schizophrenia tends to revolve around rare but unusual acts of violence. Furthermore, in a large, representative sample from a 1999 study, 12.8% of Americans believed that individuals with schizophrenia were "very likely" to do something violent against others, and 48.1% said that they were "somewhat likely" to.`

I am saying that maybe people are afraid of those with mental health problems because they don`t understand the differences.. And people who might need help are scared of coming forward in case they are committed.

Which is exactly what awareness programmes such as these are intended to challenge, and reduce stigma surrounding mental health. As your quote quite clearly illustrates - there is a lot of misconception around certain mental health issues, fuelled by media coverage. That said in the papers this weekend there have been some more balanced articles.

I was judged like a criminal; for a very long time.

That is an awful feeling to have Unregistered. I hope this thread shows that you are not criminal but that you share a lot of feelings in common with many many others.

How did you work with that feeling and what did you do? I am sure there are people who would welcome your insights. 🙂

Neil it was hard; people became judgemental and that is when you think you have had it.

Am not the original poster. RIP Shaky. You are missed every second of every day. And it's have not of!

I suppose it depends on how you view things. I suffer from severe depression. The voice I hear in my mind is my own. I question myself over and over, which is indeed a voice in my mind.

The technical term for that is "rumination" - going over and over and over again past events or conversations, worrying about potential future events etc etc. It is an extreme and damaging form of the internal dialogue we all have running in our heads all the time. It is a "light bulb" moment for many when they realise that other people are doing it too and that is is a normal and predictable pattern of thought for those with depression (and other conditions)

A key tool is to recognise the rumination and challenge it. Seek evidence to counter the thoughts (was the supposed slight by a friend really meant of were they just distracted? Or perhaps were themselves on downer.)

This is true. I think as living beings we strive too hard to be wanted when most of the time it is right in front of you. Shaky was a character who had run ins with everyone. Everybody needs love as the song goes...sometimes we strive too much. Be yourself and let go once in a while. Never try to live up to other peoples standards. It's hard....but always be positive. Getting negative sees no way out.

This is true. Sometimes I think we strive too much to be loved when to your loved ones it is right in front of you. Striving for perfection can be a destructive thing in the be all and end all of things. Every human being on this planet is the same fundamently. We all have loves fears and ambition, we also have the TV re-inforcing what is "normal". Unfortunately normal is not Bono or Tom Cruise. And trying to live up to engineered standards is not hapiness.

I can relate to the perfection part, although not in terms of personal vanity. I write and paint, I can spend weeks on something only to dispose of it. My family go mad at me saying that its great, but I can never reach the standard I want. Same with music, I can play, but would never play publically as I can hear the flaws. It goes on into work and even jobs around the house. I have spent two days hanging wallpaper, then removed it as I can see a slight pattern mismatch.

On here I will go to post my poems or songs, then delete them. I do this over and over.

Nuts!

Not nuts at all. It's part of what makes you, well, you. As the unregistered posters have intimated, there is a perception of "normality" and "perfection" that quite frankly is a little skewed. It's a societal construction. What's to define what is normal in terms of personality? We all have quirks and shortcomings, and the longer I study the more I realise that there is no such definition of normal. Not in a black and white sense anyway. It's all shades of grey, and I don't mean that damn book 😀

I can totally relate to that Nobber.

Most things I do come under my own scrutiny first. Nobody gets chance to judge it until I think it is devoid of criticism from anyone else.

That's through years of being put down for my efforts in past relationships (on my part anyway)
If somebody tells you that you're second best often enough, you start to believe it.

Somebody saying "you've done a good job of that" can make the world of difference to my day.

I must add that your poems are great....keep 'em coming. I wish I could write like that.

Recently got sent this, thought long and hard before posting it here.

If it brings a chuckle then all well and good, if it doesn't then no harm done.

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Cahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Cahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, and I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing.

PLEASE DO YOUR PART!

Today is one of the many National Mental Health Days throughout the year.

You can do your bit by remembering to send an e-mail to at least one unstable person.

My job is done!

Life is too short for negative drama & petty things. So laugh insanely, love truly and forgive quickly!

From one unstable person to another... I hope everyone is happy in your head - we're all doing pretty good in mine!

Remembering your age ..... I have sent this in large print.
