I'd like Billy Davies to return purely for entertainment value, but my head tells me that we need somebody unassuming, with no huge ego to massage, who has already performed a good job at League One level.

Sean O'Driscoll has been successful at two clubs similar in size to Preston (Bournemouth and Doncaster), with a consistent win rate of 36.20%. The reason for his eventual sacking was basically due to lots of injuries and no money to spend.

So, heart says Billy - head says Sean O'Driscoll. The latter would steady the ship, which is probably what we need right now.

Completely agree.

O'Driscoll is a humble man who really knows his football. Done a great job with Bournemouth and Doncaster, could come in and get us playing some great stuff.

The injuries were horrendous, they were incredibly unlucky but he still kept them up - more than what Brown did for us.

Drew a lot of plaudits with a small, unfashionable team like Doncaster and Donny have been even worse since sacking him.

Could come in and do well here, I think.

I like O'Driscoll.

However I remember hearing a Doncaster fan's views on him when Burnley were interested in him. Due to the style of football he gets his teams to play it can take a while for things to change, and I just wonder whether some of our fans would have the required patience...

Agree with all 3 posts so far. SOD is the man for me. Danny you do talk sense when you're not being vindictive.
Goddess, I thought the same regarding fans requiring patience, something we're not renowned for, but after 50 years out of the top flight, don't really understand why.

As long as I can see improvement, and a plan as to where we are going, I for one would be happy with that.

Given Brown's poor start at PNE, I don't think that would be an issue. If O'Driscoll was getting the team to play the right way, he'd have even more patience from me.

The only downside I can see is the vast array of spellings of 'O'Driscoll' we would witness on here.

Danny I take back what I said, I just re-read your post, and you call Donny & Bournemouth "similar sized clubs to ourselves"!?

You know that isn't true. You just can't resist having a dig at the club and it's fans.

I wouldn't want O'Driscoll.

What we need now is instant results, something I'm not confident O'Driscoll would get. If we don't get Davies, we need a man motivator but more crucially someone who knows the lower leagues inside out, someone who can get a solid midfielder from the lower league to do the Gregan role. Someone who can find another Nugent. Someone who can find the formula that puts us on another 23 game unbeaten run. I'm not sure O'Driscoll could do that if he came in.

Now where have I heard this before?

And here we have it. Fans not having patience. "We need INSTANT results". Typical of this generation & society today in general.

What's wrong with steady improvement, ensuring long term success?

We're not comparing Preston to Manchester United here, none of the three clubs have won anything of note for the last eighty-odd years and have occupied similar league placings since the 1960s.

Why are Preston fans still full of their own self-importance? We are where we are for a reason.

Got to say Isaac, this is stupidly short sighted. AGAIN.

We need to stabilise this club, going gung-ho at stuff is what has got us in this mess to begin with.

And another thing, people keep saying 'if we don't get Davies, we need such and such a type of person' - the problem is, nobody seems to be suggesting names.

The likelihood is that Davies isn't going to come, we can't put all our eggs in the Billy Davies basket.

The thing is, I'm all for building for the future. I'd say 75% of PNE fans aren't though, and neither is Trevor Hemmings it would seem. What he wants is us to return to the Championship to help ease the debt down and then get rid of the club. I fear that he'll just give up with us if we remain in this league too long.

Yes but in terms of fan-base & history (yes the 50's was a long time ago - we were good then, do some research) there really is no comparison.

Wouldn't grumble if he got the job. Has a reasonable record and the football is good to watch.

If you want charisma look elsewhere, but then again where did it get Phil Brown in the end?

Very negative and you are assuming quite a bit there cha.

I'm quite shocked at the response my post has got.

Football is a results based business, Phil Brown got sacked because his weren't good enough.

If we get a new manager in who wasn't to get instant results, what was the point in getting rid of Brown? If a new manager was to come in, take his time to get to know the players, take time to insert his way of playing the game then the season is over before we know it. And, if that was to be the case, we might as well have kept Brown.

The same Phil Brown who had seemed to have sorted out our defence (2 goals conceded in 4 league games). The same Phil Brown who had just got back his key striker. We may argue that Phil was playing players out of position, but it had started to gel.

What was the point of tearing that all apart, just to start again? We got rid of Brown to make something of this season. So, lets do that.

id be very happy with SOD as manager done very well with little backing at both clubs he been at...

1st choice BD, 2nd choice SOD,

36.2% doesn't seem all that flash to me, maybe I'm missing something. Can't imagine good football under this guy. We can accept average football if we are winning alot, 36.2% is not alot.

Having said all that I would take anyone at the moment if it meant a turn around in fortune.
