I’m going to lay one blame at PH’s door. The execution of free kicks into the box is shocking. Players caught offside. Floated crosses easy to defend and often over hit . (And Whiteman should NOT be taking them - nor Ledson for that matter). This is the responsibility of the coaches surely. Corners are fine. Varied and well executed. Free kicks are a complete disaster.

Coaching at the club deserves a lot more scrutiny than it gets, goalkeeping coach especially . . . PH needs to bring in his own people

It wouldn’t surprise if he would have brought his own people in as most managers do but there wasn’t the budget to get rid off Murphy and Politt then bring in replacements

Agree with this, apart from ‘corners are fine’.

I think we’re among the worst in the league for goals from corners - especially those infuriating floaty abominations Whiteman puts in.

The drop-off in his set pieces mirrors his dramatic decline in the past 18 months.

But still, four and a half year contract from Ridsdale, eh? 🤦🏻‍♂️

Commented on this yesterday. It's the seemingly complete lack of desire and aggression to get on to the end of our standard (crap) corners or freekicks which is as worrying as the delivery of our standard (crap) set piece deliveries. We do seem to have a bit of imagination with our corners - the Greenwood shot for example

In fairness, yesterday I did see a variety of different corner routines. A couple of well worked short corner routines, some hit into the six yard box etc. The one where Potts headed wide for example was well worked. I also get the sense that we do target teams weaknesses from corners (e.g. targeting back post against Blackburn). The movement is largely ok from our attacking set pieces, but at times there is a reluctance for anyone to commit to attacking the ball (thinking of the one where no one committed to attack the ball at the six yard box).

Although it's only obvious when Greenwood takes them.

As you say, Whiteman's corners are shocking as are his free kicks. Lofted and floated to give teams plenty of time to position themselves and clear them. They're often overhit too.

The only defence for the lack of goals when Whiteman takes them is that as he's right footed taking them from the right side, they're outswinging corners, which are less likely to go result in a goal than an inswinging corner. Another reason to miss Robbie Brady as you'll have an inswinging corner from that side. But that's still no excuse for the lack of speed and lack of accuracy. Why bother putting Whiteman on those corners when you can put Greenwood?

We have been like this for over a year now. I keep telling my lad not to get excited about a corner, we wont score...!!!! The last time I remember us scoring direct (a header from the corner) from a corner was Rotherham away last season, I may be wrong though..!!!

We dont win the first header (first contact), we dont even look like winning the first header, at least in the first half yesterday we changed it a little with a couple of short corners.

I will go back to it again though, we have no big brutes, Moyes, Clarke and Lucketti spring to mind, they were also leaders, we have JS who is not physically strong enough at times, JW who is way out of depth in this league, AH who has been a great servant but is sadly past it...

BW is awful at set pieces, pissy little floaters into the box, no pace or accuracy most of the time.

How come we can ALL see this, but the management cant???????????????

It now seems to take 3 men to take a goal kick and to what end?

Second half, not long to go we had a corner, Derby left no players up front. We still left two players back.

Some of the times we were caught offside on Saturday were a disgrace. From the Town End it's hard tp tell if it's because we delay playing the ball too long or the player in the offside position has simply gone too early.

Delivery has to improve. Even the best put in bad free kicks and corners OCCASSIONALLY. We occasionally put in a good one.
Also Our positioning and anticipation of second balls is poor. Yes we compete for them as expected, but....
has enough analysis been done on where those second balls actually fall?
It seems to me we too often have to play catch up before we can compete.

The Derby equalizer was a real comedy of errors by at least 4 players. Hecky said before the game he knew what to expect and they had worked on it. The ball gets pumped in Whatmough is weak in his header then Ledson and Whiteman ball watch as yates is alert and anticipates where the ball is going to go and gets there, then he wrong foots Woodman and scores. Terrible play all round.

I totally agree about Whiteman, he looked such a good player when he joined but now, only he does is pass sideways and his delivery from either a corner or free kick is woeful.

Its early days but if we get spanked by Stoke and West Brom which is certainly on the cards then we are in real trouble.

If PR and CH cannot see the problems we have then its relegation. The back line has not been changed in 3 years they are so slow pedestrian predictable and easy to play through.

Riis was awful yet again Saturday.

Major surgery is required and replacement of the recruitment and coaching set up.

Apart from one short corner yesterday the set pieces were poor, almost comedy gold.
Apart from the goal, that one short corner was the only bit of excitement in 90 minutes. Greenwood to McCann, back to Greenwood and....... an actual SHOT ON TARGET.
More of the same please.
