It doesn't nullify him.

Pretty sure @Bobbage isn't asking him to be playing as an actual winger.

More to play inside off the left, and Wiley can provide the width. So Devine can roam and pick up central spaces.

Not what I'd pick, but it's really not that big of an issue as people like to make out, as he still plays central when he's in formation sense, playing out wide.
It’s not just about nullifying Devine.
It also brings concerns defensively with Devine who tucking in.

Wiley could be considered more of an attacking wingback and with Devine tucked in, Wiley ends up being on his own when defending with little defensive support.
The Rovers goal happened down that side. Think it even happened with Pol and Offiah when Devine was played wide - Bolton and Watford.

If Devine does stay wide left as not suggested you do nullify him.

Well he'd be defending out wide out of possession. It'd be the same if Lang, or Burgzorg was playing there, as they'd both be wanting to take up a lot of central, attacking positions in possession.

Devine wasn't playing out wide against Watford. Pol was done 1v1 at Bolton.

I don’t know how you can say that?

Devine’s best game this season was the first hour against Watford where he played centrally.

Against Lincoln he only became effective when he swapped with Gibbs and went centrally. Other than that I don’t think anyone can deny he hasn’t produced anywhere near what he’s capable of.

I’m not saying he’s necessarily been bad but you 100% reduce his effectiveness by putting him on the left.

The point is, he doesn’t defend when out wide.

Against Bolton he was wide right and left Pol on his own numerous times. Gale was Bolton’s most dangerous player and we should have doubled up on him.
Pol was also shite.

We haven’t seen Lang or Burzorg wide left so difficult to judge.

Yeah he was on the right against Bolton, and Pol was done 1v1 because he's bad. He tracked back when he had to track back so that Pol wasn't doubled up on at any point. That's the job of the winger.

We have seen Burgzorg play on the left when we were playing a back four, he just takes up central spots. Which is my point.

I'm saying that because he can still play central.

I'm not sure where it's come from that Devine has to be super central, when last season he always played as one of the wide CM's, so was often in the wide areas.

He wasn't playing as a wide midfielder against Lincoln, he was part of the midfield three, just as he was playing last season.

He almost definitely was a left midfielder against Lincoln, especially for the first 30 mins or so.

I have no stats to back it up and just purely an eye test but I’d put good money on that when he’s played out wide as opposed to centrally his touches on the ball are greatly reduced.

A lot of people still struggle with the concept of playing a different formation in possession and out of possession.

He wasn't. We played 352/532. And he played well as the outside central midfielder as he was all of last season, so he'd drift out wide from there, and would also be asked to press the opposition full back as was the case last season too.

Quite like the look of that 👍🏻👍🏻
Our best player wasted out wide, and a bulky, not particularly technical striker playing deep?

Looks disjointed to me, and Devine should be asked to do minimal defending.

Having re-watched the highlights I'm returning with a peace offering and my tail between my legs - I do however stand by my argument he is better centrally and this will also benefit Mills when played in a more advanced RW role.

And I am willing to die on that hill.

Yeah I do agree that I'd prefer him to play central and not out wide in a formation with actual wide players.
