Team v Scunthorpe

Gallagher and Robinson can go wide and Johnson get in beyond Garner...... A less static formation. The diamond of attacking talent could all score goals.

Wiseman and Laird between them don't score many and it has been shown time after time that 5 defenders is too negative and that's what they are.

Yes away against a top team, yes playing a team in the Prem but not when playing at home against teams we should be beating.

Well we will have to agree to disagree. There's no way I would class budgies formation as playing with 5 defenders. I would also never have Welsh & Kilkenny on the pitch at the same time, especially using Kilkenny as a defensive midfielder. You effectively want to play 6 at the back, but you're calling 3 centre backs negative??

Grayson could (and maybe should) revert to the formation he was using just before Robinson was recalled and Garner got injured. That was when we played the best football and looked the most dangerous all season.

That is the area in which we need to get a signing in. We have cover all over the park but we need a key signing.

Kilkenny offers more than Browne and Brownhill and provides the link between the attacking elements of the team and the defence. Welsh could sit infront of the back four. This allows Johnson to attack with the forward 3.

Our wingers haven't done well enough and I don't see Laird and Wiseman as more than full backs. Yes Laird scored a goal, albeit a Utd own goal and Wiseman isn't an overly attacking threat.

You say this yet in a host of games we have almost been playing 6 defenders with the holding midfield players.....as they have certainly not been helping the attack.......but we are still 4th and well placed.

Im not a fan of the 4-2-3-1 - I think it causes confusion in the centre of the park......lets get back to 4-4-2 lols

That was before Johnson came and not of the centre midfielders had an attacking intent. Johnson looks to get forward, get Welsh to sit and give Kilkenny the freedom to find and create space.

Two things come to mind....do you not think Kilkenny has had enough space to make a more significant contribution this season and secondly would it be a luxury having both him and Gallagher in forward "free" roles?

Scunthorpe play 433 at moment with Van Veen, Madden and Hopper up front so I dont think they will be coming to park the bus on Saturday. Since Mark Robins took over as manager in mid October they have lost just 3 of their last 23 games. Although they have only kept two clean sheets in that period.

North End have to start scoring more goals from open play and we cant soley depend on Garner for goals. We have to be bolder in our attacking play. If we adopt three at the back at home, the two wingbacks have to pin the opposition in their own half. Far too often the likes of Humphrey drop far too deep.

I know SKD has done well of late but I still think we need more mobility in the final third when playing at home, so I am hopeful Beckford will be back sooner rather than later. In the meantime I would like us to give Robinson a go at partnering Garner against Scunthorpe.

Would agree with that Dreyfuss.....

Agree with this. Kilkenny always looks like such a good player with so much time on the ball. Trouble is he uses all this time to allow the opposition to regroup then just lays a pass off sideways to one of the fullbacks! Welsh can do that just as well but is a better tackler and, without a better commanding midfielder coming in, would be my holding midfielder in front of a back 3 or 4.

keep side that played against Utd leave stucks in nets and if need to change put wiseman in for humphreys and Johnson for Kila other than that leave it

Ridiculous to leave Stuckmann in goal when we have a vastly superior goalkeeper in Johnstone.

Stuckmann cost us the third goal on Monday by rushing out(even if it was a dive) and yet people still want to leave him in goal. Why has he become so infallible?

There is no doubt at all that Johnstone will be in goals on Saturday.

The OP's team looks the strongest option at the moment, particularly against Scunny (if Davies is not fit). They are not strong defensively (slow centre backs) so we need decent attacking options. But they will be lively up top and are playing with confidence. The back 3 are playing well and should be able to contain the likes of Madden and van Veen.

The 3-5-2 does not work at home - that's been well established. It worked rather well against United because we were effectively playing as the away team given the gulf in ability.

It lacks support out wide and we create nothing but half chances. We cannot string passes together and eventually we push too much and the opposition punish us (often with their only opportunity of the game).

Welsh and Killer can hold in midfield with the two wide forwards and wing-backs providing width. Gallagher can roam behind Garner when attacking down the right.

Is the part about Kilkenny linking between attacking elements and the defence a joke?!?!
He's the worst player in our team at doing this - all Kilkenny does is pick the ball up off the defence & plays it sideways or backwards.
Have you chosen to ignore the huge gulf of nothingness between our defence/midfield & attack? The space there is frightening!

I'm not on about a forward free role but behind Johnson but not just sitting in front of the back four like Welsh

That's why if you look at the team I picked it has Johnson or even Gallagher and Robinson linking up with Garner. Our wingers produce nothing so rather have a more flexible midfield
