Wouldn’t be against a 4-4-2 as another poster mentioned. I feel with injuries we will see the usual shape with players shoehorned into positions ensuing absolute carnage on the football pitch.
Not sure if anyone else noticed but Potts seems to be struggling with his shoulder recently so may also need a rest also and Browne step in.
Our main problem is defence. We need 4 solid, dependable defenders what can work in a 4 and allow us to get all our attacking assets on the field.
The 5 at the back with at least 1 defensive midfielder restricts us far too much and creates a huge gap between the defence and attack. If 6 or even 7 of the team is in our final third it's obvious that's where the play will be. Especially as the defensive line has no pace so don't want to stray too far from our box.
The entire Southampton back line we're in our half so many times as they pushed up as a team, slowly creaping forward and we didn't turn it once while they were there.
Our pressing game seems to have changed a bit too like it's something they're working on in training more but isn't right yet.

Along with Woodburn?Given that Stewart has been 'the shining light' in training, surely Lowey should be starting him on Saturday?

Needs his few mins does himAlong with Woodburn?

If Potts were unavailable then the player who could step in to most effect might be Holmes. Browne is more effective when playing more centrally.

May as well throw in Woodburn there then 🙂If Potts were unavailable then the player who could step in to most effect might be Holmes. Browne is more effective when playing more centrally.
Why are still retrofitting midfielders into wingbacks - stop being so cheap Hemmings and buy some wingbacks PLEASE

Good. Think that’ll be his long term position. He’s not tall enough for a centre back and not really quick enough to be a wingback. Heavily reliant on having cover from Lindsay which is problematicBack four tomorrow

I was only thinking in terms of stopgaps in case of emergency - Holmes has some pace and energy and would I think be the best fallback option given current resources. Once he is fully match fit then maybe Ramsay will finally provide us with the back-up/alternative there we need. Woodburn and Bauer are now surplus to requirements and given that their contracts expire at the the end of the season will certainly leave then though they can hopefully be moved on in January. For what it's worth I don't think Woodburn can be accused of not trying and he does produce the odd flash of skill but he just isn't good enough consistently enough - he would probably be better than average a division lower. Bauer has been a decent servant of the club.

Hopefully two upfront as well or at least Keane in the ten off Osamicj. We’ve got all these strikers now plus Riis to come back, play 2 of them and attack. Every gameBack four tomorrow

Im not sure wing backs exist. No one plays it growing up, there are full backs, wingers and midfielders.May as well throw in Woodburn there then 🙂

It’s why it’s such a hard system to play.
We had all this under Craig Brown trying to get Grezza to run up and down the right, Lewis too deep on the left.
3 at the back and wing backs in the bin I say.
I quite like the look of that set up John….4-1-4-1

Simply to have two sets of four across the pitch......we are way too easy to beat down the flanks playing 3-4-2-1 or 4-2-3-1
It also gives Whiteman total control playing out from the centre backs, we just don`t need two holding players at home.
I would probably have Mads instead of Holmes but RL seems to have an issue with Mads at the moment.

If we were to revert to a back four then Hughes would have to be one of the central defenders - I am not certain he has has the agility to play left-back in that formation. Frankly given Cunningham's persistent injury problems - why on earth did we extend his contract - the only real option for that position would be Best. As for right-back Potts can play there but once he is fully fit then Ramsay would presumably be the option. But if Best were left-back then the only left-footed option for the wide left of the midfield would be Brady.
