As a mild critic of Whiteman i have to say that he has, overall, been much better this Season.
He has also shown good leadership qualities that he was lacking over recent ones and yes he can still occasionally be half an hour late into a tackle but overall his form is much improved.
However, the criticism is (as captain) that he seems to be a Player that can rise to quality around him, as this Season, but not inspire lesser ones to perform better as in recent ones.
In short, he's having a much better Season because he has much better (younger) Players around him.

Whiteman is better because he has had a good pre season, no injuries and has Hecky as Manager, plus he isn't carrying others around him who needed to pull their fingers out, Whiteman has always been a good footballer and will continue to be one, he just needs to cut out the awful crosses that he dollies up in the area that the keeper collects with one hand.

Not sure Whiteman was carrying anyone last season. He was a very expensive piece of Ali McCann's luggage.

I just thought at times that he seemed to be collecting the ball at the back then having to get up the field to support the front lads then when it broke down he was having to scamper back whilst passing other people , not McCann, who weren't as interested as Ben, hence he got injured, just my view.

When you see him with like minded players around him he is different class, he can't do it all on his own but with Harrison and Devine in there he knows he can hang back look after the defensive side of things knowing the A&D have the ability to create up top that saves a lot of his energy.

Currently the 5th best midfielder in the league on FotMob.

Behind Louza, Torp, Hackney and Grimes. Not bad company to be with. Two Prem level players, and two that will be in the Prem next year

Been fantastic this season and I would say mom yesterday as he was all over the pitch…dropping deep to get the ball and most of the time this season. Looking for the forward pass…covered the defenders when out of position and communicating with his team as a leader should. Absolutely brilliant.

The thing about Whiteman is that there's always been a great player in there, just hamstrung by not being able to impose himself on games too much in the past for whatever reason (setup or mentality), so he's copped more flak than most players would, especially with the armband.

This season he's been a much better influence on games, and you can see his ability shine week in week out. So he deserves just as much credit as he had criticism in the past for now finding that performance and delivering it.

He's basically unlocked a lot of value, which people suspected was there. So I think it was a different kind of criticism to when a player just isn't good enough. And I think a lot of the criticism was directed at him for it, and not the management team for the selection. Whereas if you have a player who everyone knows isn't up to it because they're not quick enough etc, the manager cops equal flak for starting them.

Short version, fair play to him for coming through a period of criticism and standing up to be counted.

He had a good start to the season but he makes me think how much the game has changed over the years.

He's getting 10k plus a week for receiving the ball and passing it backwards and sideways.

He's not the only one in football, and he's not the only one underperforming but he's just not good enough to take us forward (no pun intended).

He was our best player tonight.

Id be picking on others over him.
