Work issues

I may just ask if I can work from home for a couple of days a week for a couple of weeks at least. I do have some annual leave left - some already booked for December and I have a few days planned in a few weeks too.

I've also got my annual appraisal due so I will have a few 'honest' things to say in that although my line manager already knows how unhappy I've been.
Changing job isn't an option at the moment due to my NVQ but I'm that far ahead it looks like I'll be finishing that 3 months early (I'm that far ahead I've had to slow down). Sooner it's over and I've gained that qualification, it'll be down to sprucing up everything - CV, LinkedIn etc and hopefully seeing what's out there.

Sounds like you’re a man with a plan if you can just ride this bump in the road out one way or another.

I think if things have really come to a head then getting signed off for a month might be the best option.

You said earlier in the thread that you could work from home, is that still an option and would doing that for a few weeks help? if you are out of the office environment.

Something I've always found and it might just be me, but it's always seemed easier to get another job when I'm in a job. Last time I was out of work and granted it was during Covid, but the weeks out of work pass in the blink of an eye. You start chasing opportunities on Monday and before you know it it's Friday again. Just something to consider. Now while you're at work or even if you do get signed off just start putting the feelers out to see what other work is out there for you. Something unexpected might just peak your interest and give you the lift that you need professionally.

This is a thing, 100%, especially in the modern era. A lot of recruitment goes on through LinkedIn now, and it seems like a lot of positions are "headhunted" when they really don't need to be. I know of a dozen firms / independent recruitment agencies that purely look at in-people work and not those looking. The system is gamed that way, and it is quite ludicrous.

My wife left her job in April after 11 years at it, she was burnt out and I had just had a crazy good commission from a big project which has allowed us to go to a 1-income - for now. In the New Year she will be looking for a new job but I've had to warn her that some companies discriminate, quite openly, against people out of work. They demand reasoning for any career gaps and always think they are getting a better employee if they can nick them from a competitor.

The LinkedIn 'open to work' banner can be a massive turn-off, both for recruiters looking to find staff and also freelancers slightly abusing (or mis-using) that system.

Sadly, being out of work and shouting about it is seen as a sign of failure or unattractiveness in a person, I've heard this from a number of recruitment agency contacts and they certainly prefer to headhunt somebody already in work.

Sounds like you have got a plan Gaz which is very positive……

I’m not disagreeing with you at all but your wife needs to be aggressive and positive in looking for her next job, if she goes to interviews on the defensive she’ll have halved her chances before she even gets there.

A positive post.

Just to correct my earlier posts, it was an apprenticeship not an NVQ.

Anyway, for the past 17 months I've been doing a customer service specialist apprenticeship level 3. Involved quite a bit - regular teaching sessions, discussion sessions, workbooks, evidence (e-mails etc) gathering, a 'challenging customer situation' assignment and my end point assessment which I had 2 weeks ago.

Came back into work this morning to my EPA results and the results and feedback were overwhelmingly fantastic. Overall distinction to go with all my other distinctions. My tutor was extremely impressed saying I had 'smashed it' (tbf he had been saying that throughout the course!).

I've gone through a range of emotions work wise over the past 17 months but I think this is a huge, huge positive. What I was taken aback by was the amount of support I've had from colleagues ranging from allowing me to sit in meetings for my off-the-job hours to a site visit and 'shadowing' a professional photographer. Generally, people have been great with me and that's given me renewed hope.

I've experienced a lot of ups and downs but this apprenticeship was certainly a positive throughout and gave me the boost I needed.

The past week for me personally has been overwhelmingly positive.

Great stuff. What an achievement. Does sound like a move into some analyst type roles could be up your street if you do want to consider trying to position yourself in a different light. Well done on the results and the positive feedback though, chuffed for you after the rough time you had

Great news Gaz , well done 👍🏻👍🏻

I bet that you are feeling much happier with your work life and so you should, judging by your assessment results

Well done sir
And if I may, we can often look at achievements being significant such as mountains climbed, targets met, distinction achieved, as we should.
But to help our mental wellbeing we should consider the little things that when added together make skyscrapers to others, a kind word, helping someone fix an issue, passing on experience, sharing personal experiences, joys and lows, in other words the sum of the whole
Something I wish I put into better practice myself if truth be told, it’s easy to get lost in KPI’s etc when the softer measures matter as much if not more

I don’t miss all that KPI nonsense…..

Grim reminder today of how rotten the place is. Can't say too much as I don't want to put my foot in it but I ended up having a constructive discussion with my line manager about how I was concerned about the direction the company was taking and the appalling way it is run.

Jist of it stemmed from someone (not in my department) being let go due to "cost cutting" which everyone was angry about (can't go into too much detail but it, IMO, was an appalling way to treat someone).
I'm having to avoid LinkedIn for the rest of the night as it'll just make my blood boil even more.

On a positive note, had my closing down/exit interview session with my apprenticeship tutor - more great feedback and received my unit certificates with the main diploma to follow.
Did also have an enquiry about a potential job but with it being in Blackburn, financially it didn't make sense.

Could you not afford the jabs?🤣

Just a quick few questions. Has anyone used or have an opinion on the 'Open to work' banner on LinkedIn?

I know my whole network would see it but frankly, I couldn't give a shit.

Has anyone had any success from it, or would it make me look desperate? Opinions elsewhere seem a bit divided.

I've pissed around for too long thinking things would improve but they just haven't and an e-mail I just caught before leaving work has riled me up.

You can set it for just recruiters.

I’d reach out to a recruiter but also look at the jobs on linked in and apply to the ones you think you fancy, you can AI and get them to apply for you these days.

Are you registered on jobsite.co.uk?
Whenever I update my CV on there I get inundated with recruiters getting in touch. Granted sometimes I think they're just harvesting information. Bit it might be a first step for you to see how in demand your skills are.

Got it on CV Library and Indeed but will give that a try as well.
