Once in a lifetime

Once in a lifetime

Optimistic, foolish, naive young man.

As for a trip to Wembley in the paint pot cup, - i'd rather not, thank you. Looking for a defeat against Chesterfield so that the team can concentrate on staying in league 1.

I may be optimistic, foolish and naive, but we won't go down GUARANTEED, therefore we need something to concentrate on

Another 7 or 8 game winning run and we are virtually safe from relegation.

You know things are bad when you think the JPT is the highlight of your season🙁.

Yep.
A while back, we had heated discussions on the value of this trophy. I was anti...I thought that injuries to key players could threaten what seemed then to be a run towards promotion. In some ways, that worry was justified at the time...but with hindsight, and where we are now...I`d be delighted to go to Wembley.
At the least..a hell of a day out to the new stadium..haven`t been yet. And if we win...what a delightful counterpoint to my last PNE game at a national stadium....against West Ham.

If Ive nowt better on I'll watch it on telly. I still couldnt careless if we win or lose on tuesday.

John I agree with you it's just the additional 20k plastic PNE "fans" that will want to watch "their" team at Wembley, these cunts make me want to puke.

In football terms winning the Johnstons Paint Trophy is not very high in the pecking order of football achievements. Nevertheless for some ...nay indeed all ..it may be the only chance we get to see a current Preston North End captain lift a trophy at Wembley. After all the last one was Tom Smith 73 years ago.

Now in anybody's calculations 73 years is a lifetime so, for my money, this game on Tuesday evening is a BIG game.

Brown needs to pick his strongest team (if he knows what that is) because with Oldham or Bradford City waiting in the Northern final and those other massive clubs in the Southern half (Brentford, Southend, Barnet and Swindon) this is surely our best chance for a long time of a Wembley Cup Final and a win.

Some might think the Paint Pot Cup is a bit of a joke ....but if we win it then it's one of my ambitions fulfilled.

Don't let us down Phil.

I guess I am one of those on here who don't bow down to Budgie and agree with everything he writes.

Budgie, I assume the ambition to be fulfilled was seeing a PNE captain hold a trophy aloft at Wembley, and not the literal interpretation of your last sentence which implies that winning the Paint Pot Cup would fulfill the said ambition?

When one takes into consideration that the only reason we are in this cup is because we failed so miserably last season then, no, winning this cup won't fulfill any of my ambitions, and for absolute certainty won't attract "30,000 at least" to turn up at Wembley should we make the final as stated whiteandproud.

The 34,000 or so that turned up v Bolton in the first Championship play off final had very good reason to be there, and same for a similar number who turned up at Cardiff v West Ham.

The good reason was pride in their football club, and the chance to see us win the one game that would have taken us to the premiership, and then who knows where our club would be today, as Bolton have maintained their premiership status to this day, and other similar sized clubs such as Stoke & Fulham have done OK.

I am not denying it will be nice to win the JP trophy, as it is nice when one sees our club win any game, but to talk about it in terms of fulfilling an ambition? Well I for one won't be going around feeling proud that we have won a trophy designed for League one and two clubs..........that is for absolute certain.

And as far as the JP trophy game coming up being a BIG game, well to me, the recent games that PNE failed to win against the likes of Bournemouth and Oldham were way, way, bigger.

Sorry Budgie, but signs here in this post that you may just be losing it a bit, or at the very least, clutching at straws in an attempt to see North End having some success.

Success to me for our club isn't winning some Micky Mouse cup, it is getting back into the championship to start the attempt again at reaching the premiership. And as far as seeing a PNE capt lift the JP trophy at Wembley and viewing it as an ambition fulfilled.........I for one will actually be slightly embarrassed that we are even in the position of having to participate in said competition.

We should be focusing on what really matters, ie winning league games, starting to climb back up the table, possibly still making the play offs, and perhaps even winning a game at Wembley that REALLY MATTERS, not one that is insignificant when one views the big picture.

8 out of 10 Preston fans couldn't give a shit about that cup. 9 out of 10 couldn't give a steamy one about anything you say either.

Seeing as you love stats, of the 20 winners of the trophy, 5 are currently in the Premiership, 5 in the Championship. Whether we like it or not, winning a tournament of any sorts can be a catalyst for better things on the pitch. And one we should always aim for.

Where did I write that we shouldn't aim to win the JP?

Also I assume that the stats must show by definition of your findings that 10 of the last 20 winners are either in League one, League two, or are currently playing in non-league football?

So in fact the stats could be said to show that it is a detriment to actually win this trophy.....agreed?

Next idiot please.

here I think

But back to your musings

Not agreed at all, 5 are in a lower position, 15 are in the same or better. Define detriment....you are a complete tool aren't you

I will be at Wembley if we are there, and no doubt a large number of plastic fans from Leicester will make the trip down, just as they did for the cardiff trips.

Reading this thread it seems we will need a few plastics so it does not look like Blackpool turned up in our place.

Much to laugh at again in the ramblings of the distant one. Do you think I made the OP to boost my ego and hope everyone agreed.... blimey and you say I'm losing it. Football is a game of opinions and everyone is entitle to their own. Your ramblings are far removed from what I think the majority of North End fans think - however that is only my opinion. You talk about having pride at going to Cardiff to watch the Bolton and West Ham games...well if your interpretation of having pride in your club is only being proud if we are playing big games then it says it all about you.

I was born in Preston and I 'm very very proud to be a Preston fan...I will be a Preston fan all my life irrespective of which division we are in...and there Alby old boy lies the difference between me and you.

Being a Preston fan is for life...not just for the play offs.

I would indeed be very proud to see PNE lift a trophy at Wembley, whatever that tophy may be.

No not agreed, if 50% are above League One and the remaining 50% are League 1 or below then at worst it has been 50-50 and not detrimental at all.

I would have to agree with budgierustler on this one - it is a big game. Since when have we become so big that this is meaningless?

At the start of the season, I think just about everybody associated with the club (nobody more so than me) thought that we should piss the division and not even consider bothering about the JPT - unfortunately it has taken this bad run of defeats to bring us all back to earth.

Does everybody remember how excited we were to be back in the third tier when Gary Peters got us promoted? How attitudes change.... Albertan's post is testimony to this. The days of pushing for promotion to the top flight were (mostly) great times, but lets face it - we need to get behind our club all the way, and if that includes the JPT and Tuesday night, then bring it on.
