Once in a lifetime

Once in a lifetime

Bit cheeky how you all swarm on our boards when we won it (plural) and now you are all (well most) cooing over a potential trip to Wembley for a tin pot cup

Anyway good luck regardless

Still obsessed by us I see.

Why not go on your own board and start ANOTHER thread about us fella?

Mossy has spoken.

Now if Morecambe won it, I wouldn't blame their fans for being excited about it. Surely though, PNE fans should have higher goals than winning a cup designed for the 48 worse clubs in the Football League.

How rude and arrogant!

Just so you know, we are, by merit, one of the "48 worse clubs in the Football League".

You stay inside your log cabin whilst we all enjoy Wembley should we win through to the Final.

So why do you need to see a PNE captain lift a trophy at Wembley to fulfill your ambition if being a Preston fan is for life, not just for the play offs (or in your case winning this mickey mouse trophy)?

For your information Budgie, I am proud of my football club no matter what division they play in, because I am sensible enough not to get to low when we are at our low points, and not to get too carried away when we are doing well.

I have been a PNE fan since 1958, so I don't need lectures from you telling me that I am only a fan when we reach the play offs. It isn't me shouting to the world that if we win this thing that it will fulfill an ambition.

Absolutely not me, in fact whilst I wouldn't mind us winning it, as I guess it can't do any harm, there will also be a little bit of embarrassment knowing that the rest of the country sees our club battling it out with such big clubs as Oldham, Swindon, Bradford, Southend etc etc.

We have to fall this low for you to have a chance of seeing your ambition fulfilled?

Give me a break Budgie.

Think about what you are saying in your OP.

To be honest, it makes me cringe, it really does, and from what I have read on this thread, I don't think I am the only one that is a tad embarressed for you.

It isn't too late to reconsider? Come on Budgie, be a man, admit your OP was somewhat over the top. 🙂

It always amuses me when you post Alby as you obvious think you are still at work and being the great "I am" Manager you professed to be. You tend to display the usual bully tactics of the aforementioned so you will forgive me if I laugh very loudly at your "come on be a man" comment.

You still haven't got it yet have you with regard to the OP. We had a chance in 1994 of lifting a trophy at Wembley even though it was the bottom division play off final - was that not worthy either. You are in fact so proud of our club that you can't really live with us being in league one never mind lift the " God Forbid" JP Trophy. A crowd in excess of 50,000 and a few million on television with confirm that the JP is a trophy well worth winning if only for the financial benefit. I stick 100% behind my the statement in the OP and genuinely feel sorry for the people who cannot accept that we are were we - I will re-iterate that it is still a primary ambition of mine to see a PNE Captain lift a Trophy at Wembley

If you are going to quote another poster at least get your quotes correct.

Jake said that 5 had gone onto the prem, 5 to the championship, so clearly the other 10 of his sample of 20 had either stagnated or gone worse.............ie statistcally the winners according to Jake have a 50% chance of improvement.....................but if you are trying to convince me that by winning the JPT it gives us a better chance of future success ie promotion to the Championship and eventually the prem you are clearly barking up the wrong tree, statistically and commonsense wise. Blah Blah Blah... anyone wanting to read his full text can easily find it

Jake (politely) made a good point that JPT winners seem to have gone on to better things. You called him an idiot.

I laid out some strong stats to extend Jake's argument... but rather than consider those stats, for some reason, in this reply you are just desperately trying to repeat your own (poor) interpretation of Jake's stats.

I reiterate...

  • In the last 2 decades, there have been 20 winners and 20 losers of JPT* finals
  • Presumably the finalists would (on average) rank roughly equally before the match
  • Of the 20 winners... 8 have gone on to the Premier League*.
  • 2010 winners Soton might make that 9/20, but they haven't had time yet.
  • Of the 20 losers... 0/20 have reached the PL.
  • Of the 20 losers... only Bristol City & Millwall are now outside of Leagues One/Two/Conference ... and as BC followed up their loss with a JPT victory before moving up... you could argue that Millwall are the only ONE of 20 losers to break the lower-league stagnation trend

As much as you've tried to deny it (twice), that shows a MASSIVE ... truly MASSIVE difference between the futures of the JPT winning clubs... and the losing finalists.

This is social science, so stats aren't as reliable as you get in Newtonian physics .. but we've looked at 40 teams who have been good enough to win their respective northern/southern sections of the JPT.

Twenty teams had the galvanising, catalysing feeling of lifting that trophy at Wembley/Cardiff... and Twenty teams didn't. Look at what happened to those teams afterwards. No one would argue that this is the main defining factor for future success, but I'm afraid you'd have to be an idiot to completely dismiss these overwhelming stats that suggest that the taste / confidence of a Wembley victory, might be playing a role.

(* as you are an Albertan, I should re-state that some of the 8 are "repeat winners of the jpt... but this is balanced by repeat losers in the other section of stats. Also, the JPT refers to the Football League Trophy, which has had previous sponsor names)

It looks like it's only us golfers (and a couple of others) that have any pride or commonsense left eh Baggers?

This made me laugh, you and your golf buddies probably give each other all puts under a foot and do anything in your power to protect your handicap so that you might win the $5 from each other during the old farts Wedsnesday morning penshy "tournament", is it real golf you play or is it the "over the pond" minature stuff!!!

No that was just your assumption, I was quoting current positions. Given it covered 20 years I don't think anyone would expect a single event to trigger a maximum double promotion and each club to then remain in the Premiership.

I can't be arsed validating it completely but going back to the 93 final, 9 winners were involved in the playoffs or promotion that season, in the season following their win, 8 were in the playoffs or promoted. Even the losers of those finals, 11 of them made the playoffs or promotion within 2 seasons of their appearance.

Success on the pitch in any competition breeds confidence and in the majority of cases is part of better results across the board. There will always be exceptions but in any year I would gladly take a good cup run in any competition as I believe that in the majority of cases that confidence will also aid our league performance.

Didn't realise we had so many arrogant, obstinate slapped arses claiming to be supporters.

I'm not a supporter cause i don't fancy watching a JPT game? It does not excite me one bit.

I'll be playing Modern Warfare come 19:45 Tuesday!

Enjoy the day out Loomz obviously pending.

Say we get to the final and win on march 26th, then get to the play off final come end of may. which team will have the upper hand? The team that have been to Wembley already this season or the team that could be nervous for their big day out at the national stadium.

I know which team id rather be.

Therefore the JPT could be play a massive part in our season.
