But will it be BROWN OUT if we don't win?Say we get to the final and win on march 26th, then get to the play off final come end of may. which team will have the upper hand? The team that have been to Wembley already this season or the team that could be nervous for their big day out at the national stadium.
I know which team id rather be.
Therefore the JPT could be play a massive part in our season.
Once in a lifetime
Excellent thread and supports my sentiments, we should grasp this with both hands and go for it. Yes the league must be our priority but this is a great chance to win something. I've been watching PNE since 87 and never seen them win a big final. COYW!!!!!!!

Good point I suppose.
This made me laugh, you and your golf buddies probably give each other all puts under a foot and do anything in your power to protect your handicap so that you might win the $5 from each other during the old farts Wedsnesday morning penshy "tournament", is it real golf you play or is it the "over the pond" minature stuff!!!
You of course jump to some massive conclusions in this offering billy, if you seriously want answers to the above question I will be happy to pm you appropriate information. However back to the point, from what I have read on here, many agree with me re this JPT.
For a guy like Mr Roper to get excited about us winning the JPT is truly astounding, and most of the others on here are just plain hypocrites as I remember well the piss taking that occured when Blackpool were in a similar position to us.
Honesty and consistancy of opinion is much more important than being at the back of the pack following the lead dog, and that's what many on here do.
Not me, I am my own man, and call it as I see it, and just to repeat once more for the ones who only read what they want to read, I will be happy if we win this thing, but it is a long long way away from fulfilling my ambition for the club that I support, in fact it isn't even close.
30,000 fans ? Not a chance. I would sooner spend the money on a weeks holiday. It would cost a fortune going to Wembley with the cost of entrance and the rip off prices £8 for a burger etc.
Play off final maybe but mickey mouse cup final , No !!
Tek your own butties & go.........
Jake (politely) made a good point that JPT winners seem to have gone on to better things. You called him an idiot.
I laid out some strong stats to extend Jake's argument... but rather than consider those stats, for some reason, in this reply you are just desperately trying to repeat your own (poor) interpretation of Jake's stats.
I reiterate...
As much as you've tried to deny it (twice), that shows a MASSIVE ... truly MASSIVE difference between the futures of the JPT winning clubs... and the losing finalists.
- In the last 2 decades, there have been 20 winners and 20 losers of JPT* finals
- Presumably the finalists would (on average) rank roughly equally before the match
- Of the 20 winners... 8 have gone on to the Premier League*.
- 2010 winners Soton might make that 9/20, but they haven't had time yet.
- Of the 20 losers... 0/20 have reached the PL.
- Of the 20 losers... only Bristol City & Millwall are now outside of Leagues One/Two/Conference ... and as BC followed up their loss with a JPT victory before moving up... you could argue that Millwall are the only ONE of 20 losers to break the lower-league stagnation trend
This is social science, so stats aren't as reliable as you get in Newtonian physics .. but we've looked at 40 teams who have been good enough to win their respective northern/southern sections of the JPT.
Twenty teams had the galvanising, catalysing feeling of lifting that trophy at Wembley/Cardiff... and Twenty teams didn't. Look at what happened to those teams afterwards. No one would argue that this is the main defining factor for future success, but I'm afraid you'd have to be an idiot to completely dismiss these overwhelming stats that suggest that the taste / confidence of a Wembley victory, might be playing a role.
(* as you are an Albertan, I should re-state that some of the 8 are "repeat winners of the jpt... but this is balanced by repeat losers in the other section of stats. Also, the JPT refers to the Football League Trophy, which has had previous sponsor names)
I am not going to keep answering as this is getting boring, but if in any way shape or form you are suggesting that to win the JPT can in anyway at all propel us forward to eventual membership of the prem than you are talking out of your backside..............end of story.
However, winning the League one championship, or even going up as runners up, or even by way of the play offs, now you are talking as not only have clubs who do that had a good season, they are immediately just one year closer to possible prem football.
You keep bringing up Jake's first post, and in that post Jake says that of the last 20 winners, 5 made it to the prem, 5 to the Championship, and the other 10 are either still in League one or lower.
I will say this for the last time, 50% success rate of improvement in league stature of the winners of the JPT isn't significant enough for me to get too excited at the prospect of us improving our current LEAGUE situation even if we win it, which may not even happen.
The reason is that 50% of the winners didn't improve their status..............get it yet?
I may be optimistic, foolish and naive, but we won't go down GUARANTEED, therefore we need something to concentrate on
....... the Play Offs, then !
I guess I am one of those on here who don't bow down to Budgie and agree with everything he writes.
Budgie, I assume the ambition to be fulfilled was seeing a PNE captain hold a trophy aloft at Wembley, and not the literal interpretation of your last sentence which implies that winning the Paint Pot Cup would fulfill the said ambition?
When one takes into consideration that the only reason we are in this cup is because we failed so miserably last season then, no, winning this cup won't fulfill any of my ambitions, and for absolute certainty won't attract "30,000 at least" to turn up at Wembley should we make the final as stated whiteandproud.
The 34,000 or so that turned up v Bolton in the first Championship play off final had very good reason to be there, and same for a similar number who turned up at Cardiff v West Ham.
The good reason was pride in their football club, and the chance to see us win the one game that would have taken us to the premiership, and then who knows where our club would be today, as Bolton have maintained their premiership status to this day, and other similar sized clubs such as Stoke & Fulham have done OK.
I am not denying it will be nice to win the JP trophy, as it is nice when one sees our club win any game, but to talk about it in terms of fulfilling an ambition? Well I for one won't be going around feeling proud that we have won a trophy designed for League one and two clubs..........that is for absolute certain.
And as far as the JP trophy game coming up being a BIG game, well to me, the recent games that PNE failed to win against the likes of Bournemouth and Oldham were way, way, bigger.
Sorry Budgie, but signs here in this post that you may just be losing it a bit, or at the very least, clutching at straws in an attempt to see North End having some success.
Success to me for our club isn't winning some Micky Mouse cup, it is getting back into the championship to start the attempt again at reaching the premiership. And as far as seeing a PNE capt lift the JP trophy at Wembley and viewing it as an ambition fulfilled.........I for one will actually be slightly embarrassed that we are even in the position of having to participate in said competition.
We should be focusing on what really matters, ie winning league games, starting to climb back up the table, possibly still making the play offs, and perhaps even winning a game at Wembley that REALLY MATTERS, not one that is insignificant when one views the big picture.
Top Post.
However the Play Offs are STILL in the frame.
And I can still go and have a day out in North London for a bit of fun.

Oh so you are an expert on my emotions regarding PNE now are you.....Alby - stop digging.
Seriously.

Regardless of how anyone views the competition, surely the income generated from a Semi-Final and possible Final win is a good enough reason to want to win it? The revenue could help with the long push back up the leagues.
Success on the pitch in any competition breeds confidence and in the majority of cases is part of better results across the board. There will always be exceptions but in any year I would gladly take a good cup run in any competition as I believe that in the majority of cases that confidence will also aid our league performance.
Birmingham last season won the League cup, and got relegated.
Portsmouth recently reached the FA cup final and got relegated.
Middlesboro (1997 I think) reached both the FA cup final and the League cup final.......and got relegated.
Historically Chelsea, Man City, Leicester and I think Brighton(?) have also reached FA cup finals and ended up being relegated in the same season.
And there must be many more clubs who have reached the semi-final or quarter final of cup competitions who have also ended up being relegated.
I think you are getting the facts of cause and effect mixed up..........clearly it is more likely for a team going well in the league to have a good cup run, as they are playing well from week to week, but by having a good cup run, it doesn't mean a club is going to do well in the league.
Lets talk straight here. The JPT is a Mickey Mouse cup if ever there was one, and was only introduced to keep interest longer in the season for the lower league clubs who for the most part don't go far in the bigger more lucrative cup competitions.
Even the sponsors and Football League agree, otherwise why would they introduce rules about the team being selected, ie so many who played the previous game or the next game must be selected? I will tell you why, because if they didn't, it would become the JPT Reserve team cup. That's why.
Albertan, everyone is politely disagreeing with you, which is good.
Me, I just think you're a fucking stupid old cock.
And you think for one minute that I care about what you think? Again I ask, when are you actually going to post something about PNEFC as against repeated personal insults aimed at other posters on here?
You are an ignorant twat of the first order, and you are a moderator?

Albertan, I've only just come on this forum but from what I've read in this thread alone you seem extremely up tight.
Chill out mate. You're in the semi-final, albeit a low-profile trophy, so surely as a PNE supporter you must possess some sort of excitement about tomorrow night?
As I said before; the income you could generate from winning the JPT is a good enough impetus to want Preston's name on it.
Tek your own butties & go.........
Will they allow you to take your own food in?
Will the two-legged regional final be decided on penalties if tied after both legs, or on away goals? Can we win it without actually winning a game in 90 minutes?

I'm not a supporter cause i don't fancy watching a JPT game? It does not excite me one bit.
I'll be playing Modern Warfare come 19:45 Tuesday!
Enjoy the day out Loomz obviously pending.
Tbh I wasn't referring to the chesterfield game, moreso the eagerness of fans to suggest the final (which we prob won't get to) would not be worth turning out for.
I can't imagined these lads tuned in when lost to the Dingles, or fucked up again v Tranmere.
Well I did, and it hurt. Given that our team is dog doo, and our owner is stagnating, I'd say it's our only realistic chance of some excitement. We're going nowhere in the league. It'll probably take us 15 years to acclimatise in league 1.
For a guy like Mr Roper to get excited about us winning the JPT is truly astounding...
In Bunter's defence, a fan of any team who follows them home and away gets excited whenever their team enjoys success.
It's an emotion you'll never experience.

1/ Your grasp of stats is shit (which given your personal belief that you're clever, is really quite ironic)
2/ Your inability to argue a case is shit (which given your personal belief that you're clever, is really quite ironic)
3/ I can understand why people eventually end up calling you names !

For once, I agree with you.
