New forum features - introducing 2 way ignore.

New forum features - introducing 2 way ignore.

ha loads have blocked me, but it ruins the thread, im anti blocking anyone but if someone wants to block me so be it but that blocking makes the forum a worse place; does two-way block work on mods? i dont think so does it?

As JK has said it's a trial and people are seemingly using it so we have to listen to both sides of the story. For those who don't like it, some are using it but whether it's impacting their "enjoyment" I guess we don't know though they would presumably remove the blocks if they felt it impeded their use of the site.

Does it work on Mods? No idea but I think we are exempt from it otherwise it would make it harder to moderate content, whether it becomes a one way ignore I'm not sure

That's precisely the thing. The forum is great because there's no algorithm selecting what you want to see or hear so you get the full spectrum of opinion, and have your own ideas challenged/corrected which is healthy!

2-way blocking evidently hasn't worked, as entire sections of the forum have needed to be closed down recently and bans issued.

I'm not sure you can conflate why the new section was temporarily closed with the use of this ignore function

so mods dont really experience the impact as such but may see some benefit in fewer kick offs... maybe

Ive been considering blocking you so that I can avoid your abysmal musical taste.....😉

You're right though, 2 way ignoring just seems to be completely ridiculous
hahahaha

good one essex, to be honest i try and cater for everyone in the music section, probs the richest place on this site

but even though you drone on about dylan i cant ever block it 🙂

True, we have to read everyones shit. There are downsides.

But as per above, the feedback is useful so people keep it coming so we can at least make adjustments hopefully or alternative solutions that might eradicate the current flaws

Some people are using Ignore, but the big mistake in implementing this thing was turning 2-way Ignore on by default on everyone's account - which meant people using Ignore may not have even realised they were now using 2-way Ignore - not everyone digs around in the user settings, not every user is very tech-savvy.

I can see why forum mods want powerful tools to make their lives easier, but 2-way Ignore simply causes way too much collateral damage to forum users in good standing, if they are stuck on Ignore by a prolific user.

Since mods can't be Ignored, maybe the ramifications are not obvious, but as soon as you get e.g. Ando ignoring you (a user I've never had a cross word with, so being Ignored by him is a total mystery to me - again, another problem with the feature, no one knows why they're being Ignored), long forum conversations can disappear except for replies, but with all the context removed.

It makes the place totally unreadable at times, and you have to see it to appreciate it.

Trust me
He is a bumbling old fool and will have simply pressed the wrong button thinking he would get a coffee with two sugars

Is there any other service where you can log in as a user and choose to pay an annual amount towards it but then see LESS content than if you didn't log in?

The simple solution is for those misbehaving, thus causing this feature to used, to actually behave or instead, face Bans of some length.

Bans are a last last resort so we decided that this, as a trial that we had no evidence to go on as to whether it would be a success or otherwise, was implemented. The only way we had to find out was to activate this option.

I understand the frustrations shown here.

As per previously a Sub Section being closed down for a few days a couple of months ago, it is always the small minority spoiling things for the majority.

I'll bring this issue up with the other Mods. Personally, I would disable it for now and hope that people can act grown up.

@JK @jakehake

Due to the feedback on this thread I have disabled 2 way ignore.

I apologise to those who where using the function and where pleased with this option.

As @Jack Daniels suggests this does therefore mean that the moderation team will have to start implementing bans if anyone starts taking advantage of this.

We reserve the right to switch it back on should feedback determine more users would prefer us to do so.

Whilst always welcoming feedback from our patrons I have found some of the criticism slightly OTT. As always everything we do is to try and improve the user experience whilst also ensuring our moderators don't have too much to do.

I do trust that people will make the moderators unpaid role as easy as is humanly possible
