Morning.

Patrons have always had five minutes to edit a post, whilst registered users only have a couple of minutes.

Afternoon!

That’s really absolutely not correct JK - well certainly not in the case of this particular patron! Maybe I am considered special 😉

For absolutely certain, the time limit has been about an hour. For months/years, I have edited posts virtually every single day more than 5 minutes after I posted - there’s no mistake - this week alone, I know I edited a post half an hour after I posted it.

It’s not possible for me to provide concrete proof. But for example, have a look at Post 61 on the Tokyo Olympics thread (link below). My post was made at a time when our triathlete had 4K to run - and then I edited the post with a review of the race after it had finished. That sort of approach works well for slow-moving threads about other sports - rather than creating a new post for every update.

I do that regularly- and I remember writing and later editing that triathlon post. If you’re not convinced by the content of the post, maybe your admin rights could show you the posting and editing history of that post - I am sure the date-stamps will prove it, if you have access to such information.

A similar one from this week - in the Test Cricket 2021 thread, post #1220. I am certain I edited that more than 10 minutes after I posted. The only evidence that I can see now is that there’s an automated mark to show I edited the post that day.

I am absolutely sure that my editing rights changed at some time between yesterday afternoon and 11.15pm last night.

Afternoon.

Earlier in the week we had to amend reset some forum permissions to prevent a possible security issue, however nothing has changed since yesterday afternoon, so it may have only just reset on your system.

Since we moved to the current format patrons editing time has been set at 5 minutes. If you have been able to edit posts for a longer period of time then that is because the permissions on your account where set incorrectly. This does appear to be the case for a handful of posters who became patrons prior to the switch of software to Xenforo.

It is something we can discuss if more time can be added for patrons as a perk of supporting the site, although we have already regarded 5 minutes as a long enough time to change, grammar, spelling or add more to a post. You can of course post additional posts within 60 seconds of your original post.

The reason it is set at 5 minutes for patrons and 2 for registered users is because historically some users would go back into a opening post or reply hours later changing its complete content, hence derailing or causing complete confusion in a thread. Although we accept that sometimes a post may be made in error or needs editing for moderation purposes so always encourage users to contact us if required.

I will of course discuss this with the moderation team and then patrons if it is something that we feel should be reviewed.

Makes perfect sense, thanks. There may have been another feature of my account’s quirky settings - that you might have already noticed. If I edited quickly (I strongly suspect within that 5 minutes) nobody would know I’d edited. But if I edited beyond 5 minutes, then a little notification would appear in the bottom corner stating that I had edited it and at what time. Now I think about it, I don’t remember seeing that “edited” notification on many other people’s posts (except where done by a mod) - so maybe it was only associated with that quirk.

I fully understand that choosing that time limit is a balancing act. An hour limit was probably unnecessary but I would really miss the facility to edit up to 15-20minutes later. Personally, if I’ve added content of any significance more than 2 or 3 minutes after posting, I do precede it by the word ‘edit’ - but not everyone would bother, I know.

Occasionally people editing will caused problems with readability and sense of threads - but on the other hand, five minutes is a really short time to make corrections unless you are disciplined to immediately proof read - which often can’t be the case as we often submit a post and get distracted. I think quite often, people will take the time to improve a post if they have the time - which IMPROVES readability - so that’s part of the balance. Also plenty of people (like me) feel irritated if we’ve cocked up grammar, spelling or miss out a key explanatory word - another benefit of giving people longer.

I would really canvass for a 15-20 minute editing deadline - at least as a trial.

Cheers

Morning Reg,

I take all of these factors into account when reading any and all of your posts 😉.

In addition, I type all of my posts slow as I know you don't read fast 👍.

You are absolutely correct Reg... It might have been an hour but it certainly wasn't five minutes.......... I quite like 5 minutes because all our cock ups stay in situ. 😀

I think I was allocated a special amount of time because it’s rarely even possible to even READ my posts in 5 minutes-let alone find errors and correct them.

I've been getting this message recently when trying to open certain threads. For example the "M60/61 now" thread.

I know it usually says this when a post or thread has been deleted, but I can see that new entries have been posted on the threads when I go back to the home screen - so they're definitely active when I try to access them.
