Matchday Thread The Plastics v Preston North End - 10/11/23 - KO:8PM - Championship

He’s a defender though. I’m not denying his ability on the ball but he’s part the reason why our defensive record is so poor. Watch the chances they created, he’s involved in every single one? Mainly down to positioning and inability to read the game. Surely he will only get better and like I said, I want that to happen so bad. But like I said, RIGHT NOW.. he’s not a starter.
Hughes is obviously a big big miss for us.
As I’ve always stated, our defensive is our weak point by a long long way.

What do the following have in common?

PNE 0 - 4 West Brom
PNE 2 - 2 Southampton
Ipswich 4 - 2 PNE
Leicester 3 - 0 PNE

err ... Best didn't play in any of them.

The only game Best has played in and we have conceded more than 1 goal was Coventry.

With the exception of the Coventry game we have conceded 1 or nil goals in every other (league) game this season other than the above four. Three of those four were pretty dire but absolutely nobody can put that at Best's door. Oh, and Hughes played in the West Brom debacle.

I think one needs to give one's head a little wobble.

I know they don't see us as their main rivals & the same for us but I love it when we beat Rovers.

I know a few Plastics and for some reason they are awfully quiet today.
I keep seeing lots of comments on twitter about how last night was our cup final but they don't care about us, the don't care so much, that they keep commenting on it 🤣

A few critical months ahead in my opinion. If we maintain a bit of momentum, we stand a good chance of attracting decent players in January. How often have we been able to say that over the last decade?

Similarly, who we buy in Jan is going to be the difference between us becoming top 6 contenders. RL needs to work out how to release the potential of Millar who tends to get cancelled out by other teams on a weekly basis. I'd personally pair him up with an equally creative player (Mads?) to make it doubly difficult to cancel out the creative effect.

RL frustrates me like he does everyone else, but you can't deny he's built cohesion in the team and they themselves appear really happy as a group. Watching RL go round the players individually, you can tell a lot from their reactions - osmajic was beaming from ear to ear and gave him a big hug, Browne got words of encouragement whispered in his ear and was clearly happy with what RL said to him, Brady was laughing and joking with him etc..

I hope CH sees the opportunity to galvanise what's been built in the past months as it could be just the thing we need to push on this season.
Perfect summary

I’m not going to ’give it you in the neck’ because I practically agree with most of your ratings and I also agree with the odd comment regarding Best, but 3.5 really? If you’d given Best a 6, I may even have given your post a like. I accept we all have different opinions about players, but the likes of Jude Bellingham weren’t all that great when first brought into the team apart from potential. He will get better with experience, but when we’ve so far won 87.5% of games that Best has started in, I’d be reluctant to leave him out if I was Manager.
Best with a 3.5 is absolutely ridiculous.

I am not a Brady lover by any means but got to admit [apart from his first touch] he did fine and was a steadying influence.

I thought his cameo was pretty poor. I'm not as harsh a critic as a few on this forum but Brady now does have a feel of player in his 30s who's a step behind everyone on the pitch in terms of getting to 50/50 balls and receiving passes.

To me it was a game where the midfield really started to function well. Browne was class (he obviously knows the importance) and wonderful finish, comfortably Whiteman's best 90 minutes of the season which is no surprise as he's been back a month now so getting into his rhythm and Holmes pressed, got the team up the pitch and very unlucky not to score.

That trio need to be locked in now for the foreseeable future. No putting Ledson in because Lowe is scared of one of the Boro midfielders in a few weeks unless there's an injury or a suspension. What Lowe selects as the 2-3 attackers is still up to him as I thought Millar's end product was abysmal, he wasted so many good positions whereas Mads could pick those passes out as he did finding Whiteman for the glorious winner.

I’ve been his critic loads this season, but as I said last night, I’ll credit Lowe for his tactics and substitutions last night.

Never in a million years would I have thought that Brady would put in a performance like that, but he came on, gave us stability on that left hand side and put in a cracking shift.

The football on display at times was far better than I’ve seen this season and on another night we could have scored 4 or 5 (Milutin son, learn the offside rule!)

Rovers fans all crying saying we played hoofball, which I didn’t think was true at all. Blackburn are good on the eye, but so so weak.

As @OB1 said last night, we may not be blessed with technical brilliance, but this team gives it their absolute all and the manager should be credited for that too.

I see that @Thewhites. hasn’t been around for a while. Does he still believe the team aren’t playing for the manager, and they are deciding the tactics themselves? 🤣

You should read their forum the arrogance of most (not all a few are fair and sensible) knows no bounds. They really believe they are so far superior to us that even a blind man can see it. Unbelievable the jumped up plastic fools.

They're just a bang average mid table championship team these days.

Genuinely couldn't name half their team pre kick off. I do like Szmodzics, he reminds me a bit of Danny Ings in terms of how he drifts around the frontline so can see him ending up in premier league in a few years time if he scores a bit more regularly.

I presume the rest are just loan signings and youth products. Didn't they sign Ennis for 1m + and he was unused sub last night.

Their teams to get promoted where when they had Rhodes and Gestede upfront both scoring 20 a season and also a few years back an attack of Brereton Diaz, Sam Gallagher and Adam Armstrong with Bradley Dack also involved. Harvey Elliott was also on loan there in 20/21.

They fell short in those times and no chance that's a top 6 team in waiting. Basically same as the Mowbray ones, pleasing on the eye but little killer instinct when they're dominating possession.

League games in which Best has played:

Played 6
Won 5
Drawn 1

points 16
PPG 2.7

I see the games on TV, from that his delivery of the ball into the box is exceptional - never quite so clear in the flesh - the curl he puts on the ball, both in the air and ground passes, is amazing. Also, he delivers from a distance not just the byeline.

'As you've always stated'? You've only made 3 posts?!?

Traditionally, we've only really strengthened in January when we've been in trouble and needed someone to help keep us up, in the years we've been pushing for a top 6 finish, we've tended to stick with what we've got, hopefully that'll change now but we'll have to wait and see

Yep I'm not expecting much in January at all given what was signed (eventually) this summer. Riddler has also mentioned in interviews since there's hardly any room for manoeuvre with regards FFP so advanced warning there at least.

It will just be a freebie young loan from prem. However we've seen the impact Cannon and Archer made in half a season so get that right and that one player could still play a huge part in a top 6 challenge.

Best with a 3.5 is absolutely ridiculous.

It's a very odd rating. He's 18 and was last night playing in position he probably wouldn't have been coming through the youth sides.

Yeah his positioning wasn't great when they were countering but look at what he was contributing at the other end. Don Goodman was enthusing about that cross he sent in for Milutin, not Best's fault he couldn't stay onside for that.

Best is potentially a top player in the making. A young player actually created by this club as very few come through from academy to fully establish themselves in championship so a bit odd he's been rated as miles below everyone else on the pitch as I didn't see that at all.

I think 3.5 is way too harsh.
I accept he is not perfect, but then he wouldn’t be here if he was.
His delivery at times is superb, perhaps the best in the whole squad. The corner that Lindsay put over.
The goal we conceded did not come from his side.
You rightly say Osmajic needs service and it is Best who has provided the best passes into the channel for him in the last two games. If you watch, Rovers started blocking Osmajic’s runs when Best was on the ball.
Millar is a total lightweight defensively so it is always going to be tough for whoever plays behind him.
He grew into the game last night and he looked a lot stronger at the end than a lot of the young Rovers players.
Having a player in the team can only encourage other prospects to train harder and sign for us. They can see a route into playing in one of the hardest divisions in the world. A great opportunity for any young kids watching.
Keep going Kian, you’re doing great.
100% agree
