Matchday Thread The Plastics v Preston North End - 10/11/23 - KO:8PM - Championship

Hopefully the board will address this area with the same aplomb they approached improving our forward options in the summer.

After 16 games last season, we'd managed 9 goals. This time round we're on 23. Ok, we've been more clinical, but at times we've played some good stuff. Absolutely could not be said this time last season.

However our defence is still below average for the division. As it was last year, as it was the year before. Hopefully we can be proactive in January and improve at central defence and left back. Would be a huge boost for us going into the second half of the season.
Really think we should be asking Rangers about Davies. He’s everything we’ve been missing in that LCB role

Need someone else for the RCB position too to compete with Storey

Isn't that what Whatmough is here for?

Didn't he start for them in Europe this week?

Or is this just one of your "see if City will take a million for Trafford" moments?

Only down to injuries. He’s not first choice for them and never has been since joining them. No harm asking the question

In the discussion about Best... if you could implant Davies's positional sense into Best...

From what I’ve seen and what Wigan fans have said, no. He’s far too slow to play right in a back 3. Lindsay’s backup only

I'd quite like to see how Josh Seary would fare at RCB, with Storey playing the central instead of Lindsay in a cup game.

Definitely think Storey is better suited in the middle and Seary has more pace and is probably better progressing the ball.

Not sure we could realistically blood two youngsters in the back 5 at the same time though.

He’s been playing there in the central league so the coaching staff will have some idea. Unlikely he’d be up to Championship football regularly so I’d still be bringing in a new option

Best 3.5- Feel like I’m going to get it in the neck for this so I will explain. I really really want our kid to do well but the matter of the fact is, he’s not good enough RIGHT NOW to be in the first eleven. If you’re gonna come back at me, watch the game over and watch him .. positioning is really poor, no urgency to close players down, lost his man almost every time, reading of the game is poor.
I pray for him to come good but if he was 28 would he be anywhere near our eleven? No. So what’s the difference? Loans are for devolving players and that’s what he needs.
Totally agree with the bit I've highlighted, with a bit more experience he might have even gone on the goal line when they scored instead of just jumping a bit.
HOWEVER, his balls into the box are absolutely submlime!

All depends on our budget and what finances are available. A first-choice, permanent, left-footed, mobile centre-back must be the priority so I could "make do" with what we have with Storey, Whatmough and Seary on the other side.

On the "defence" discussion, interesting to note that we've conceded a goal more than Sheffield Wednesday who have conceded 23 in 11 defeats, 3 draws and 1 win!

And that's not a freak stat... our total of 24 is also one more than the average number of goals conceded by the bottom 12 teams in the division. Clearly a problem. At the other end of the pitch, we're only 6 goals behind Leicester!
Three games / hammerings changed things radically though - WBA, Ipswich & Leicester.
I not trying to gloss over but (1) it was in the same period & (2) great tactics at Deepdale by WBA's Corberan.( 4) Leicester & Ipswich are probably the best two ( at the moment) in the League.

So what went wrong ?
I've forgotten whether Hughes was in any of the 3 or not.Was Hughes injured at that time ?

I wish people would stop banging on about Davies. He can't even get in a team playing in a Mickey Mouse league, and he's 28. As has been said by other posters we need to be sourcing young up and coming talent with a potential resale value (Layton Stewart, Mads for example}. I don't personally rate him as anything particularly special. Never go back, we could and should do better.
