Matchday Thread PNE v Sheffield Wednesday - 29/12/23 - KO:7:45pm - Championship

Lowe said his post match interview that they knew that Sheffield Wednesday would double up on Liam Millar, so why didn’t he/ we have another plan to help us be a better team. Oh hang on, we don’t have another plan if plan A doesn’t work. everyone should be expecting Liam to be man marked in every game and we should have other plans to deal with it.
He's either that arrogant that he doesn't care, or he is genuinely oblivious that he's highlighting his own flaws in the vast majority of his interviews.

The man said he didn't want to be an average championship manager. Well he's certainly achieving that. He's a crap one!

Lowes plan B is hope plan A works 🥴

Yes, the service he received was awful, essentially just long, hopeful punts in his general direction.

At the moment though, his hold up play when he does get the ball isn't good enough to enable him to play successfully as a lone striker and he needs to be much better in that respect. As we saw with Hugill, it's something that can definitely be improved - with the right coaching.

That's where the problem lies.

My take, I don't see last night as being Lowes fault ( I'm not a Lowe fan)
Same team , same set up. First 10 mins bossed the game with no end result, same at the start of the second half. Other than that the whole team were poor for me.
Our ability to pass direct to the opposition was awesome, pity we couldn't do it to our players. Same with the majority of headers, we just seem to head it anywhere, but Sheffied cheated, they kept heading it to one of their own, just not cricket.
Our build up play was, as usual pedestrian amd nearly every time we got anywhere near their penalty area we continue to look to see who we can pass it too (sideways) rather that put any pressure on, or take a shot, or run at em. time and time again.
Service to front man or men, nonexistant.
Dead ball situations, truly aweful no matter who was taking the kick.
Pace ! what pace? I think it's really unfair when teams win the ball off us and immediately turn and run at us with pace, highlighting our complete lack of pace in midfield and defence. When we win the ball we at least pass it around sideways to allow them to set their defence. We try to give them a sporting chance.
Last night, the best team won and worryingly, I have no idea how you get a consistently good perfomance out of our players.
We have what we have and seems we are stuck with them.

Unfortunately Lowes cunning plan of playing only one forward didn’t fool the Tykes, in fact it didn’t fool anyone, in fact it was in fact incredibly foolish......but what can you expect from a fool?

To be fair if he'd changed the team from Boxing Day he would've been slaughtered.

Can't pick fault with Lowes starting line up, same team that put in a great performance and result against Leeds, no issue there at all and for the most part we dominated the game just lacked that cutting edge and killer pass against stubborn opposition willing to sit in. As others have stated that has been a huge problem for us since the Alex Neil days at this level. I thought that was why the likes of Mads and Millar where brought in, to open up stubborn defences especially at home. 🤔

Where I think Lowe ballsed up last night was changing formation back to his favoured wingback system and the subsequent subs when we had Wednesday pinned in and under pressure.
For me early in the second half the game was crying out for Mads. Think taking McCann off for Mads and getting Mads higher up the pitch could have freed off Millar who was being double marked. We where well on top we just needed a bit more composure and creativity in and around their box. The formation change and subs killed any chance of winning that game and IMO terrible game management from Lowe.

I'd hate to be a striker on this team, feeding off absolutely nothing. It's painful at times.

Very disappointing as last night was a great chance to kick on after such a positive boxing day. 😭

The ref had an absolute shocker too. Unbelievably bad.

He [ Lowe] was a lower league striker. Is it possible that he does not know how to break down a stubborn defence in a higher league or does he think his own limited success was due to the players around him not setting him up right?
Two things I did not like last night.
1]The failure of midfielders to link with forwards to give 1-2's around the edge of the box. This is due to limited movement on the diagonal from both.
2] When Potts got past his man in the second half he put in a couple of excellent low crosses into the danger area well done him, BUT on both occasions no player made the run to the near post which would have been an easy chance, but the chance went begging. On one of those chances a certain holding midfielder got to the edge of the box and stopped. You could see it on his face, [if like me you were directly behind the goal] that he knew if he had taken two more strides forward it would be a gift.
This, to me, is lack of imagination and practice on the training pitch. I have said many times, we have not had a decent striking coach since Paul Mariner left.

Nobody was making that run, you'd assume, because he'd been putting floaters over the top all evening. If he starts playing those balls more often, strikers will attack that space instead.

Fucking hell is Lowe round the fucking twist, just listened to his interview, once again we will look at the next game and work a plan out. What fucking plan, is that the plan you take of the shelf , dust it down and say this is the plan. The same fucking plan for the last two years .
"Using the same plan we have used 1000 times before is the last thing our opponents will expect" - general melchett

*Edited slightly*

Lame excuse. One player should be making the run,,,take it in turns to do it,.... there were enough attacking players for both.

Mix up the crosses. Maybe they were in the first half, I couldn't tell you, but if it takes you 90 minutes to put a low driven ball in, can't blame anyone for not anticipating the first.

Potts booking came from pure anger and frustration due to her and the liner between them not giving a blatant foul on him.
The frustration stemming from her missing countless other offences against us yet blowing up for something and nothing for them.
She also made us bring the ball back to take a free kick rather than play advantage when we still had the ball and started a break away.

She was fucking abysmal.
Just remembered she also gave them 2 goal kicks which were clearly corners.
One of which she started pointing to the corner flag before changing her mind and gave them the decision.

We didn't play Barnsley yesterday.

So what’s the point of him then?
No responsibility for coaching, team selection, substitutions, game management?

What wound me up last night was their time wasting which went unchallenged and pretending to be injured...our sideways passing is fucking scandalous...get mads on to at least try moving it forwards. Millar was constantly surrounded by several defenders...so put him midfield or something to fuck their plans up...shoot at goal and stop fannying about...ffs..they were hopeless but we were scared of trying anything...terrible performance and back to square one again

Frustrating that when they had a man sent off we didn’t send an extra man forward eg Lindsay. Our spare man was at the back when we were losing. An example was LL passing to Whiteman a yard away from him which he did more than once. Was it instructions from the side or just their choice ? I guess we’ll never know but it was such a basic error imo.

The ref had an absolute shocker too. Unbelievably bad.

Let’s just look at this about the starting line up.

1. The Leeds game was very entertaining and a great result, but our success that day came down to them playing a rookie right back that Millar could beat every time, and Leeds came at us so the formation which we pit out is also used in away fixtures and suited it.

2. The game against Wednesday was a completely different challenge and as so needed a different approach to win the game. Whilst Millar got plenty of the ball he was pretty well shackled so our main cutting edge was blunted.

3. To start the game with a lone forward at home has proved in most of the previous games at home to be completely ineffective, as it was again last night.

4. Magic has shown a few flashes in games but has been ineffective as a lone striker at home, his reading of the game and positional play just aren’t up to it, I don’t see him as a lone striker, are we playing him because he was a big investment?

5. It’s a managers job to sus out the opposition and put out the best team to win a game, he isn’t doing it, it’s fine to put out the same team when you are consistently doing well and getting results but that’s not us at the moment, yes he would have had criticism changing the team last night, did fear of fans reactions make him do that?

Has any fan got any faith in Ryan Lowe? And if so, why?
