Matchday Thread PNE v Sheffield Wednesday - 29/12/23 - KO:7:45pm - Championship

Millar was doubled up on, no doubt about that. They still gave him a yard or so to drive right at them on some occasions
For some reason, he didn't or was told not to do that.
Instead he'd come inside more often than not am just lay it off an then usually the move just fizzled out.
What's the worst that could happen? He loses the ball? He gets tackled? He makes something happen.
OK Millar was doubled up or tripled up on occasions that leaves us with 1/2 spare men. Why didn't we use them? Why didn't these spare players take it upon themselves to get involved?

I see tonight as a turning point.

We witnessed tonight that Lowe has learned nothing, he had the chance to show managerial and tactical nous and failed miserably.

He started the same team that played Leeds in a game with completely different challenges, and let’s be honest our result against a 10 man Leeds was largely because of Millers performance against a rookie right back that he had the beating of every time.

So tonight we started with one forward at home again, we couldn’t retain possession up front which allowed the opposition to get more of the ball and gain confidence. They offered very little but were extremely hard working and organised which resulted in poor first half display and yet another goal conceded from nothing.

Second half started with a bit more effort which resulted in us being busy going nowhere, eventually we brought another forward on and actually started to look dangerous hitting the woodwork twice, but still going sideways and backwards far too much , eventually, and after the opposition again being reduced to 10 men we went into frantic panic mode with our main tactic being leaving it to Storey to put in appalling crosses.

Ryan Lowe this simply isn’t good enough, I’ve given you the benefit of the doubt, but tonight has shown the reality is you just aren’t good enough.

Complete shite, you'd be the first one on here complaining with probably the rest of the forum if he had changed the starting line up from Leeds.

Most of the team, especially Browne, Whitman, Potts and McCann played very well against Leeds, not just Millar who was obviously the stand out.

Sheff Wed had a game plan, nick one on the break and then put 10 men behind the ball, teams do it now and then and it works a treat as it did last night, sometimes these games happen.

Typical Ron, it’s not shite at all.
And their game plan as you describe only underscores my point that this game was a completely different challenge to the Leeds game and therefore needed a different strategy and line up.

Kindly engage brain before posting next time Ronald.

Just hasn't though, has he?

He's hardly made any starts and the ones he has started, we've been absolute shite and created no chances (Huddersfield aside).

Going two up top did help to an extent, although I know what you mean. We didn't look more likely to score. But, it did help us sustain attacks and win more first and second contacts when we went long.

He’s finished at this level. We offered him a contract based on a purple patch and then got an unfortunate Injury.

Sooner fans realise this the better. A side who have aspirations of the play offs should not be having evans as one of their main strikers.

Think it's mainly our superstar manager who needs to realise it about Evans tbh. Hopefully with Riis gaining match fitness, we'll see much less of Evans on the pitch.

Absolute drivel. Given the amount of games played in a short space of time, and the no doubt energy sapping performance mentally and physically from the Leeds game, last night was crying out for the team to be freshened up.

I think we were the only team in the Championship who didn't make a single chance to the side. If Lowey didn't make any changes because the 11 played well vs Leeds, just shows his complete limitations as a manager at this level.

How about ball in front of him on the floor. So that he can use his speed an d strength to fend off defenders and get a shot away. Not in the air where 6ft 5 defenders don't even have to jump.
He ran channel twice in the first half yesterday. Think he lost it both times. Strength? Soft as shite. He rarely challenges for a header - doesn’t have to win them but at least make the defender work for it

‘Last one I can think of is Nestor El Maestro. He's an unusual one as he's not actually foreign! He was born in Sussex to Serbian Parents! He is currently managing CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria. They are currently joint top after 19 games with a record of 12W, 6D and 1L. He came on my radar when he was in Turkey as he said something along the lines of 'life is too short to defend in a low block' after his Goztepe side got beat away at Besiktas. Cracking mentality to have imo. Kinda like Ange-Ball’

I've found the interview and one of his quotes was 'The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom. Would we concede less if we defended 20m closer to our goal, probably. But life is too short to defend in a low block'.
I’ll have some of that. El Brando out, El Maestro in!

You and I weren’t watching the same game then, Ched had an immediate impact and continued to give us the hold up play and distribution totally lacking in Magics game last night.
I don't want a STRIKER who holds up play. I want a striker who strikes, gets shots away goals etc. Why have a striker who holds up play waiting for a midfielder to arrive 5 minutes later? Top strikers ( salah, kane , haarland) don't fuck about they see the posts and get shots away or at the very least make the defenders work.

I always thought they where the Colliers.
Maybe they dropped that when coal mining stopped being a thing.
I'd never heard of the 'Colliers' nickname but you're right. Assume it was gradually superseded by 'Tykes', although their badge still bears the image of a miner - and of a glassblower.

Because our passing was lethargic and easily read and intercepted. Our Players must have approached the game thinking it was a walk in the park.
