Matchday Thread PNE v Sheffield Wednesday - 29/12/23 - KO:7:45pm - Championship

Once again tonight we tried to play every through the wings, most of the time through Millar. Very little went central. Then we punt hopeful balls into the box. It was incredibly predictable and slow.

Millar was nullified out of the game early on. They’d obviously done their homework. Plus, he was outpaced. Personally would have swapped sides of the pitch to get him back in the game.

Lindsay, Holmes and Potts were all poor tonight.

Browne was sat too deep most of the game. Didn’t have great game.

Whiteman has been terrible this season so far. He’s not a defensive midfielder! We need to get a grip in central midfield.

Osmajic first touch is poor. He also does very little to contribute to overall play. Stop playing him on his own!

Evan’s was probably the wrong decision. Really like the guy, but he’s becoming less and less effective overtime.

Is tonight all Lowes fault, no. Could he have done better changing things up during the game, yes. It’s just another nail in the coffin.
Spot on 👍

Potts booking came from pure anger and frustration due to her and the liner between them not giving a blatant foul on him.
The frustration stemming from her missing countless other offences against us yet blowing up for something and nothing for them.
She also made us bring the ball back to take a free kick rather than play advantage when we still had the ball and started a break away.

She was fucking abysmal.
She was but that’s not what cost us the game , the tactics and the players did that .

This squad of players has got 2 managers sacked, and they’re on their way to make it a 3rd in under 3 years.

Sooner or later, the club is going to have to realise that if they want a crack at the top 6, they have to invest in a better playing squad.

This team is a million miles off being a play off side. Sacking Lowe won’t change that. Just as sacking Neil and McAvoy didn’t.

We’ll all be here in 18 months time having the same conversations about how the next fall guy manager is guilty of the same things.
To be fair, from memory, only Bauer (who has hardly featured under Lowe), Browne, Hughes, Storey, Ledson and Potts remain from when Neil was sacked. Overall though, I agree with your post.

The Sheffield Goalie was taking the piss because she never even had a word with him about the time he took, so he kept on doing it & didn't receive even a wagging finger. That should have been 5 minutes added on just for his antics. Then there's the subs-time to add onto, as well, at 30 secs/sub. Plus the farce of the sending off . Say 3 minutes more.
Second half, how many minutes in total? My guestimation is eleven.
There could have been another hour added and we still wouldn't have scored!

Oh for someone who's willing to run at the heart of the opposition defence in an attempt to make something happen.
Isn't that the truth, just needs someone with a bit of belief. Run into the box, maybe draw a pen.
The exact same players can't even put 2 decent back to back performances together.
We have decent players and individually they can be amazing some games. But as Moyes used to say if they could do it every game they'd be in the Premiership. Do we have the 6th best squad in the division? I doubt it. Probably lower midtable in terms of quality, taking nothing away from the owners who have invested in some quality players.
Unfortunately Browne was guilty of poor quality into the box tonight…..team were set up fine but just didn’t deliver.
Managed to catch the odd minute or two whilst at work. Crossing was awful, either badly overhit or straight into the goalie's hands - hard to understand from seasoned pro's. Think the players must have over indulged in the eggnog and Christmas pud.

Wasn't the ref's 1st Championship game our win away at Brum last season? Didn't she get praised for a good performance then?

I think that she was OK in the first half, but should have gone back to book the Wendy's player for a bad foul on Browne, having waved play on.

She certainly made some errors in the 2nd half though. I think she relied on the lino's call for the foul on Potts. She needed help when she turned away and missed the foul on Frokjaer, but it was her mistake. As was the failure to give the corner (Ossie's booking). Mads' booking came after a wrong call by the other lino. The officiating team had a mare in that 2nd 45 as a unit, and she certainly cracked down on dissent. Would a more experienced ref have done differently?

Woah... I take it you mean 'everyone' except Alan Browne? Just as example. Surely you're not saying to dump the club captain?

Signed by Grayson:
Browne

Signed by Neil:
Cunningham, Whiteman, Bauer, Lindsay (on loan), Evans, Storey, Hughes, Ledson, Riis, Potts

Signed by McAvoy:
McCann, Lindsay (permanent)

Signed by Lowe:
Woodman, Keane, Frøkjaer, Brady, Stewart, Woodburn, Cornell, Ramsay, Millar, Holmes, Whatmough, Osmaijic

The rest came through the youth setup.

Worth noting that Cunningham, Whiteman, Evans and Lindsay all joined in January 2021 and Alex Neil was sacked only a couple months later so it'd be harsh to pin his sacking on them considering the results from before they joined played into his sacking too.

Absolutely nothing to do with Lowe tonight and anyone who has a go at him is way off the mark.
It was simply the quality in the final third that let us down….too many crosses and set pieces way too near to their keeper.
This was light years from a couple of weeks ago and I’m still much more positive even though we lost.
Disagree, Yoowell.

We created absolutely nothing once they predictably shut down Millar - and Lowe’s answer (eventually) was, errr, Ched. 🙃

The first sub should have been to get Mads on at HT to give them something else to worry about and give us an alternative creative outlet.

He’s simply a lower league ‘vibes’ merchant - not a tactical bone in his body (other than parking the bus).

He loves harping on about his game plans, well last night his plan came up with two forgettable shots on target against a team that’s been bottom three all season.

Even down to 10 men, they saw out what should have been a tense last 14 minutes relatively comfortably.

Looking at his rinse-and-repeat post-match comments, the fact that he can’t even see the puzzle - let alone solve it - shows why he’s out of his depth at this level.

Not quite the Scouse Westley . . . but not far off. 🙁

What a frustrating watch it was last night.

I thought the ref had a shocker TBH but she wasn't the reason we lost.

They are a very poor side who will probably go down but it doesn't seem to matter who it is If teams park the bus we just don't have an answer. That coupled with the fact we always seem to be wide open on the break isn't a good combination.

You can't fault the effort but when your most creative player is left on the bench for 60 minutes you wonder what goes through RL's head at times. Mads should've been on at HT IMHO & I would've at least tried Miller down the opposite flank as they were doubling up on him on that side so maybe he would've had more joy with a switch. We'll never know.

Consistently inconsistent. Lacking mental strength. Lacking motivation and self belief. Lacking ability. Lacking ambition. Often lacking application & effort. Lacking determination. Lacking pace. Lacking creativity.

Guess that's why they're at PNE, because we're a perfect match.

As a general rule, you get what you pay for. No manager at PNE will get their ideal first choice targets.

Any manager, whoever they are, can't polish a turd. They can roll it in glitter, which will hide it for a while, but that's all.

Your not a Luton fan by any chance, they are probably living proof that if you have the right guy in charge turds can indeed be polished, or perhaps if you have the right people making the decisions they can identify what look like turds but when you put the jet washer on them hey are actually gold bars.

The incident Osmajic got himself a daft caution for we thought was actually a goal kick - it hit him quite firmly on the back I thought.

I read everybody's opinions with varying degrees of interest (from 10 to zero). I rarely comment myself now (clueless me, can't spot a "channel" or a "hole" to this day) just to add. Logically, I'm sorry to say, all we really can do is keep on moaning, until we eventually get lucky like the lashers (this might be in 2110). The club has had it's chances, no one can say it hasn't. Other smaller clubs like us take them, but we never do. Just one of those would have been enough to stop many people moaning (and I don't blame them) but we f*cked it up again because that's what PNE do.

I don't believe in hoodoo (as Grayson said) but how can be it be that no reasonable manager with reasonable resources can ever get our weary arse over the line ? It must be one the greatest mysteries. Yet another season gone to the dogs it seems. I don't think even f*cking Einstein could work it out, frankly.

Another good decision the Sky commentators used as a stick to beat the ref with. Similarly Potts used his arm to control the ball before being unimpeded, so just play on was a reasonable call. Venting at the ref is a good distraction from your own shortcomings encouraged by the biased Sky 'expert' who was equally as clueless in his analysis of the game.

As an aside, the reason the ref positioned centrally outside their box was because she'd cannily quickly identified it was a space we'd leave empty and completely unexploited.

Back from the match. We started well enough but then reverted to type . We have no guile, no plan B. Its no good lumping it into the box and hoping. We do not have a latter day Alex Dawson. Mads should have been on at halftime. Downs poor performances particularly from Lindsay and Woodman.Ups the return to grass of Emil. Our home record under Lowe is appalingly unacceptable in terms of results, performance and entertainment value. Take care all.

Refereeing decisions are always more in focus when the player’s performance is crap.
