Matchday Thread PNE v Stoke City - 9/03/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

I see the ref's body has apologised for us not being awarded a penalty for the pull back on Keane by Greaves v Hull last week.
I'd suggest we were denied 2 yesterday. The pull back on Riis and the push on Browne. For me they're both clear, deliberate contact in both cases, both instances the defender moved towards the attacker and in both cases they gained an advantage.
To be honest when I saw both instances live, I didn't think either of them were penalties. I've just watched them back on the highlights on YouTube and I'm still not convinced they were penalties.

With the Riis one, it just looks like he's tripping up over himself/the defender. I tried watching it at a slower speed and on a larger screen although the video quality isn't great. There isn't a clear point where the defender grabs hold of Riis' shirt. There's a point around the 00:12 mark where the defender might've grabbed a hold of him (I couldn't quite see it clearly) but it's so brief, we'd be extremely lucky to have a penalty for it. If there is a shirt pull there, Riis goes down way too quickly for the ref to be able to notice.

With the Browne one, I think there's a stronger argument than the Riis one but still I'm not convinced. At normal speed, it looked like Browne felt a hand on his back and went down quickly. Slowed down, I could see the defender trying to position himself in front of Browne but I still think Browne went down too early for that contact to have really brought him down. Plus it was only one hand on his back and one hand on the back isn't enough for a penalty, especially with the force the defender was applying. It's hard to tell from the angle in the video how much the defender obstructed Browne to be fair.

I think the problem in both instances is that Riis and Browne were looking for penalties. They went down too quickly and in these situations you need to let things play out for longer for a ref to be able to see it. Even after a review, I don't think there's a strong enough argument for the ref's body to apologise in these instances.

I agree about last weeks. it looked at the time and turns out that it should have been a definite pen.
I didn't think either of yesterdays where a strong enough shout to be given.
My criteria is always, would i have been 'disappointed' (gutted) to see that given against us, i would have been yesterday.
Plus IMO the Ref should be certain to give it!
Not of course that you wouldn't take them if given, as we do have bad ones given against us.

I had watched them both back. I'll not repeat my initial post, Riis goes to ground probably because he knows you dont get penalties unless you end up on your arse. Clear one for me

Stoke manager Steven Schumacher told BBC Radio Stoke:

"All wins are satisfying, but those three points in particular because it was the type of game that I'm not used to playing in terms of style.

"I thought it was necessary today to match Preston up because physically they are so strong and the pitch here is really difficult to play football on, so it had to be a battle.

"It wasn't pretty on the eye but it got us three points that we needed. Lynden Gooch defended really well and then in the second half gave us a real creative spark and put a brilliant ball in for the first goal.

"To take six points in a week, when we could maybe have taken seven as well, is a good response."

Are we a strong side physically? I just don't see it at all.

We may be a lot of this but strong physically isn't one of them IMHO.

I think we’re capable of being a physical side and have won games by outmuscling our opposition- Cardiff, Plastics and Cov away

Problem is we’re physical whilst also being slow as hell. There is absolutely nobody in the team you’d fancy in a footrace going forward or back. Which means being physical only works if teams are actually coming on to you instead of sitting back

Also we’re weak as anything psychologically - that’s something that’s been throughout the club for years

In the 2nd half Millar was very often a player on his own , waving his arms, whilst standing in a large empty space.

There's a pattern there; Mads and Millar being denied the ball while we shuffle it sideways before launching it long to avoid taking risks.

Better to play for second balls, set pieces and knockdowns, eh?

After stumbling across a winning formula, Lowe reverted to type as he didn't want to lose against his old pal.

Let's hope he doesn't want to 'lose face' against his old employers next week, too. 😏

On Saturday afternoon I was traveling back from near Gatwick with three passangers who talked all the time so I was unable to keep upto date with the game, the only thing I heard was Radio 5 live and they just went over to Deepdale for an update. The commentator said and I quote "Riis Jackobsen was taken out in the penalty area yet the ref didn't give a penalty", I had recorded SSN and watch that. They went over to Deepdale for an update and the commentator said that Riis had been involved in a 'comming together' and it wasn't a penalty. Which was it, a penalty or not? Thanks.

I watched it on the idiot box and was convinced it was a stonewall penalty. However, comments from guys who were at the game were adamant that it wasn't, Emil went down a little too easily. In these cases I give way to those attending the game. iFollow is better than nothing but can produce some misleading views.

It was one of those where Riis was using his pace, and when at full tilt the slightest touch can knock you off balance...

Ryan had a plan.
Ryan likes plans.
His plan would thwart the opposition.
Ryan knew how they played.
But they knew him.
They know he likes plans.
So they were naughty and made a different plan.
Ryan’s plan didn’t work.
Ryan’s players were very confused.
Ryan didn’t have another plan.
Ryan and the team and the fans were very sad.
We didn’t plan for that.
Silly Ryan.
