Matchday Thread PNE v Rotherham Utd - 29/03/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

I thought it was what used to be called a professional performance. Let’s face it, we were on a hiding to nothing. The majority of PNE fans expected us to win, which we did comfortably but it wasn’t enough for some. Once we took the lead their heads dropped and when we got our second their fans started leaving as they suspected another thrashing.
Our back 3 were too strong for all the different strikers in the Rotherham squad. Our midfield center partnership of McCann and Browne were superb and dominated play. I thought Holmes was fantastic in the first half had the beating of left back Rever for speed and linked up constantly with Mads. Riis deserved his two goals and looks a stronger player since returning from his year out through injury.
3-0 down at the interval, Rotherham changed to a back three bringing on fullback Bramall to counteract Holmes. This worked to a degree but such was our control that we could bring on Noah Mawene, Best, Stewart and Seary, and rest some players for Monday’s match at Birmingham.
Riis was given ‘man of the match’ but how good was Mads. He gave a master class of passing and did two nutmegs on their number 16 Lindsay, who just smiled at him in acknowledgment.

Kicks like a horse

Literally everything goes through Mads. He is vital, what a player.

I too was pissed off we didn't go for the jugular second half but having looked at the table and the sheer difference in goal differences, we'd be pissing into the wind anyway. Hard to watch on the day but if its for the greater good and we go and win on Monday, then fine, I agree with the idea behind that total stroll about training session of a second half.

Just got settled in for the evening so only read a few posts so far, agree that Rotherham where really poor and look like they will be a poor League 1 Team next season.
Such a comfortable win where we really just coasted.
However, being 3-0 up at half time I was a little disappointed that we didn't make it a 4 or 5 nil win, but that is probably being hyper critical.
Rotherham never looked capable of making any sort of a game of it, that's for sure.
At least we didn't have to over exert ourselves for Monday's game!
edit
Forgot to add, Good to see Riis get the 2 goals but Mads is absolute class, why it took so long for Lowe to see what half the fan base could see way before him, bemuses me.
He could become a Deepdale legend if we can keep him long enough.

The very act of them scoring elevates them above that Rotherham team. We could have left the pitch and they still wouldn’t have scored
I saw the highlights and they showed just one chance for them, a weak shot from Cafú.

As someone posted earlier, I think it was @OB1, that was the right thing to do, we need to keep players fit and free from injury. We are so far behind on GD that a couple of extra goals would've made no difference, it's the points that matter and we already had them in the bag.

Plus giving experience to the young lads may pay off a lot more long term!

Absolutely laughable that some of the Town End were still moaning and groaning when we didn’t pass forward at 3-0 up in the second half.

It was nice to actually be part of a comfortable victory, for once. As for Rotherham, to put out such a poor standard team in this division is nothing short of unprofessional. They were truly and utterly woeful.

Yep, there is that point of view, and i don't necessarily disagree with it but travelling on a bank holiday with rubbish Motorway traffic and jams, it would have made the enjoyment of the Day just a tad better to have come away with a 4 or 5 goal win, especially as we don't get to see many of them, these Days, and they where so poor that they were there for the taking. Semantics really though, it was and is a mild criticism if a criticism at all - just a comment, really.

We were playing against a team who are all but relegated, once we scored our first goal they had given up. Their defence and marking was awful, one of the worse teams I have seen in this division.
The second half was a great opportunity to build on that 3-0 lead, we simply sat back and played it safe and passed sideways and backwards, a great opportunity to put our goal difference into a positive against arguably one of the poorest teams in this division in a long while.🤔
The game was won at HT.

We aren’t going to turn our goal difference around to match those of the top 6, at this stage of the season. It’s all about points from here on in.

Personally, I think it was the sensible thing to do to simply see out the game, prevent injuries and conserve as much energy as possible for the run in.

Birmingham at St. Andrew’s on Monday will be a much tougher test.

Plus Rotherham changed shape at half time, think of their fans, would they have been happy to just lose 3-0 , stifled the game second half and we controlled every aspect.

Sorry can't agree, Rotherham are bottom of the league by a mile a very poor team, GD could still play a part, look at Hull.
We had an opportunity to massively improve ours, at very little risk, Rotherham were that bad, and energy conservation against a team who had decided damage limitation was their sole priority would not have been an issue.
A big opportunity lost to get us into a positive GD, opportunity missed imo.🤔
