Matchday Thread PNE v Huddersfield Town - 9/4/24 - KO:7.45pm - Championship
I also remember the bricks and stones raining down on us from the bus depot at The Shay, Halifax, also being stood at Mill Hill railway station, Blackburn and Oldham train station being pelted waiting for special trainsAlways nice to beat Huddersfield. I remember the bricks lobbed at us from the back of the open end at Leeds rd as a teenager.

Me too.... The good old days eh? 😀
January 1972, FA cup 3rd round v Bristol City, I was sat in the old West Stand when a ball came over from the left back position over to the right wing where George Lyall hit a thunderous volley from the touch line and over the keepers head into the Town End goal. North End then went 2-1 down, until 7 mins from the end, up step Gerry Ingram with a 7 minute hat-trick to set up a 4th round home tie with some team called Manchester United, George Best, Bobby Charlton, Denis Law and don't forget Alan Gowling
In the game at The Shay in 1987, I looked up at who was doing the throwing and there stood amongst them a little old lady who must have been about 70!I also remember the bricks and stones raining down on us from the bus depot at The Shay, Halifax, also being stood at Mill Hill railway station, Blackburn and Oldham train station being pelted waiting for special trains
Luggage trolley on the train tracks at Carlisle, everyone jumping off the special train while it was on a red light waiting to arrive at Shrewsbury Station, what a sight that was, 500 North End fans walking up the tracks and through the fields, memoriesMe too.... The good old days eh? 😀
To be fair, there are plenty on there concerned about Saturday too...I have just had a peep on the Norwich forum to see if there is any reference to the upcoming game against us but there is no mention yet…..
However, there is a thread which is about “ Play Off Tickets priority “ during which they debate how many tickets they will get for the away leg …..
How entitled and arrogant is that ?
One poster even talks about needing a bigger Wembley because they would easily take 45,000…..
Fantastic three points coupled with results elsewhere means our season goes on a little longer, for now at least. Despite the position we are in there is still that annoying feeling of what could have been. Losing to Stoke at home, Brum away, QPR at home and Sheff W at home stand out as real stinkers.
Last night was a strange and somewhat chaotic match. At times neither team could control or pass a ball but yet it produced 5 goals.
I thought Huddersfield were by far the better side first half and deserved their lead, even though it was another defensive calamity of a goal to concede. Their movement off the ball and pace in attack was far superior to ours - until we equalised out of nothing. Keane showed great perseverance to ‘win’ the penalty - seen it back and its soft to say the least. Lets be honest up until that point we hadn’t looked like scoring.
From the equaliser though there was only one team going to win. It felt as though Huddersfield had no confidence after conceding and basically capitulated, allowing us to gain full momentum. Goals change games and although Lowe made the right changes, stating the obvious, it wasn’t a tactical change/masterclass that turned the tide.

When you looked up, you would also have seem me stood up there too!
I had turned up not knowing that the game was all-ticket and was very happy that I had a (free) option to watch the game. I felt in a pretty compromised position to see those around me chuck stuff down at my fellow Northenders!
The other thing I remember was that Alan Kelly was a teenager- unusual for a keeper- and he really did look fresh faced. As he ran out towards us at the start, and they read out the teams, some old timer next to me said to his mate “Is that the Alan Kelly who played for them in the ‘64 cup final?” 😜

Really? Was it not a tactical change to change positions for Holmes and Brady and to bring on Browne and Osmajic ?Fantastic three points coupled with results elsewhere means our season goes on a little longer, for now at least. The shay was always a rum place to go …..Wasn’t it the “Hebden Bridge Skinheads” pelting us with bricks at The Shay?
I went there for an FA Cup tie in 1976 , it was a foggy night and it got a bit tasty post match.
We lost 1-0

To me thats more personnel change not tactical - we started in a 3-5-2 shape and ended in a 3-5-2 shape. The personnel changes worked a treat but the main factor of the win was getting the equaliser, at the time out of nothing. The whole game momentum changed.
Im not having a go at Lowe here by the way, but first half we were wide open in midfield and Huddersfield got a fair bit of Joy and were in truth the better side.
Some would argue Brady has been one of our better players recently so why move him to RWB (square peg round hole) and move Hughes into LWB (someone who has played LCB all season do square peg in a round hole) to accommodate a 3-5-2 shape?? There are two sides to every debate.
Our subs were certainly of more attacking note with Holmes moving to RWB and Brady at LWB in place of Hughes who is more defensive minded and offered little in attack down that flank.
You can make tactical changes within the same overall formation. To me thats more personnel change not tactical - we started in a 3-5-2 shape and ended in a 3-5-2 shape.
