Matchday Thread PNE v Norwich City - 13/4/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

No idea what everyone else has written but thought we did well until the subs.

Don't think Mads was playing well and I thought the sub made sense at the time but in hindsight it didn't work. Mads was offering support out wide. As soon as the ball got to our wingbacks, they had no one to play it to when he went off. Mads playing poorly still tries things with his passing. Riis was lazy when he came on. Keane stayed far too central when he was playing the attacking midfield role. I don't blame Lowe as much for that sub going wrong.

The Holmes/Evans sub was daft. Holmes was one of our best players today for me. The change in shape just confused everyone. I don't know whether Osmaijic was meant to be wing back at first before it became clear we were doing 4-2-3-1. Osmaijic isn't a winger. He can't take people on. He runs onto through balls and bullies defenders with his physicality. Out wide he doesn't know what to do. Plus he should be in the box rather than delivering balls into it. Evans is too slow to be effective at this level these days. He didn't apply any pressure on the Norwich defenders and actually made the game easier for them. Plus he's coming back to fitness so his touch was way off. Stewart would've made more sense to bring on because he'd at least press. Don't think it helps that we had Evans up top on his own with all of our better scoring strikers behind him. Plus Keane was too slow pressing also.

I’d rather have Mads on the pitch instead of osmajic at RWB, Riis at left wing, Evans (who hasn’t scored for 12 months and legs gone) up front , Stewart on for 2 minutes and a reserve centre half in midfield.

I’ve no badges but I don’t think that formation will ever work.
Lowe threw the dice, we needed the win. He would have been slaughtered, also, had not tried to do something to buy the win.

You have just avoided any need for me to comment. I totally agree on all counts especially the Holmes substitution which was plain stupid.

Fair result. They controlled the game and always looked the more likely to nick one. We had a couple of moments, especially from Holmes in the first half, but most of our threat was in fast breaks and beyond the hour mark you could see the legs could no longer do the business.
Yes the squad is depleted - you can’t lose Miller, McCann, Potts and Whiteman without suffering - but you can’t help feel that a more tactical manager might still have got something from the game. All we got today was more and more forwards expecting more and more hoofball. So sad.
Yes, Mads had a poor game but his poor is still much better than most of the squad’s average. Who else was ever likely to provide for all those strikers? I see Whatmough got the match sponsors’ MotM and he did ok in his defence-shepherding role but, blimey, he was a rabbit in the headlights whenever he had space and a chance to create. Never mind, take Mads off.
Holmes had a fine first half (for which alone he’d get my MotM) but he tired quickly in the second and that gave his marker time to push up and cause trouble. Browne didn’t look 100% although in fairness he was playing a deeper role for which he is usually less effective.
Magic is like Ched - an impact player best deployed as a second half sub. Rarely does either player do the business from the start. A crying shame that Riis was sacrificed on the altar of Magic’s hat-trick.
For me at least, these are the tactical decisions which cost us the game. Yes, we don’t have a big squad, and we do have a big injury list, but better management could get more even from this those who remain fit. They’d use suppliers as well as strikers and they’d play football, not hoofball.
But this is our position and I guess it won’t be changing for a while. Just pray those most talented lads don’t lose faith in Lowe and ply their trade elsewhere.

Keane has been worse but for some reason Mads gets subbed first.
To be fair, I thought Mads was absolutely terrible today. It can happen - just a shame that he dropped such a stinking performance in a game of this magnitude.

We gave it a go. Norwich looked better than us, which is why they’ll get Top 6 and we won’t.

I do feel we’re a couple of players and a manager away from Top 6.

Holmes should've been man of the match by a mile

They deserved it second half better side, Whatmough's header goes in on half time different game.
The Holmes substitution was the odd one but we had to win, perfect time to blood a few although not at Southampton. The lady of obese size has arrived she is now in full song. A version of Crowded House, 'Don't dream it's over'

In such a tight game a mistake was always going to be decisive. I thought it would be a mistake from a player rather than the manager getting his subs completely wrong and destroying the shape of the team. Even a below par Mads can create something out of nothing. Keane should have gone off as he wasn’t in the game.

I thought Holmes did well on the right but when is he ever going to get match fit? He looked like he’d hit a brick wall after 60 mins.

He was our only real threat
Your right, how Keane wasn't subbed is baffling
It difficult for all our strikers though with the way we approached the game today.
Basically chase that an have no support whatsoever when you hold it up!

You’re right.

I love achieving nothing season on season.

Proper does my head in this outlook. The whole point of competition is trying to win and do the best we can.

The outlook from many is that they are happy to just tread water. We may as well not bother competing next season.

We’re the one of the most depressing sides in the EFL to support. Fucking shite.
I do think that season ticket sales will be much lower next season……

I think that a few thousand will vote with their feet.
