Matchday Thread PNE v Norwich City - 13/4/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

Scoring unexpected and outstanding goals is one of the best attributes an attacking player can have at this level. Especially in a team like us that creates so few goal scoring openings.

Goals are what keep clubs in the division. Once a team stops scoring regularly, they'll find themselves in the bottom six in no time.

I am pretty certain we will sell Riis this summer considering he's one of the few assets we have worth anything at all. So, you might get to see what losing a proven championship goalscorer means.

Just don't be expecting the transfer money to be invested back into the playing squad. Think you'll just get to see more of what the likes of 'zero shots on target in 11 apps" Stewart can offer instead.
Yeah, I see that. And I know he's not been without injury issues during his time with us. But his record of c125 appearances and 29 goals - let's call it one goal per four appearances - from the 20/21 season till now might (should?)!
be better. I know, he needs service and the problem goes deeper that just saying "Riis is rubbish". I'd be delighted if the club found a way to make me eat my words!

Totally that. Subbing Holmes was quite bizarre. He was the only supply line to the front two once Mads had shown he was having an off day. Wheres the point in having 3 strikers if no-one can feed them?
If you watched the game you’d know it was the right call to sub Holmes. He’d completely stopped running, and was just walking on that side of the pitch

Some very good points.
Just to pick up on a couple…when Riis came back from his serious injury we were told it would be a ‘managed’ return.
It certainly hasn’t been and he really has looked burnt out in these last few games.
And just on Freddie….he’s certainly levelled out this season and wonder if it’s anything to do with the coaching side?
PS…just as an aside…if Riis hadn’t played so much we may have not have been in the play off hunt until, yesterday.

I think that you are right regarding Riis.

In his first 3 games he came on as sub, the last of the 3 was as a half time sub v Bristol City. Since that match, he has started every league game apart from Plymouth (he was ill) and yesterday.

In his 13 starts I think that he has averaged about 77 minutes per game. How on earth is that "managing his minutes"?

All the time I was watching the game on Saturday all I could think of was Norwich’s approach of keeping the ball. Accruing possession . Giving themselves, through having use of the ball for the majority, the more likely chance of winning the game. While at the same time . We played the Lowe ball. Out of position players given one task , to compete , win the ball then , ….then what? We didn’t play through the thirds, we didn’t protect the ball , we didn’t make it ours . We lumped it or lost it. Our only chances came from set pieces . Even when we won them , I don’t know if you’ve noticed we aren’t actually very good at headers , aside from Whatmough ‘s powered header most of ours loop harmlessly over or wide. We really are a workmanlike team. Organised , able to hold out for long periods , block, tackle , head . Construct , create , excite .. not so much
Without Millar we have very little creativity,Mads being really the only other creative player and he had an off day.🤔

Let’s just hope there’s been some intense training/coaching in the week to get our 3 strikers to work effectively together today.

I’d have pulled Keane for Riis and left our most creative player Mads on.

Any evidence of this yesterday?

Battled hard today but we didn’t get many breaks. The defeats against QPR and Wednesday were when it cost us.
Spot on Cadley…. If we could have got 5/7pts from the home games against QPR, Sheff Weds and Stoke then we would still be in the play off mix..

True plus the correct Ref decisions go are way against Millwall & Saints also. But there gone now. Are record against bottom half sides at Deepdale has been poor this season.

So frustrating Ando from where we were in September. That form was never going to last but put us in such a good position. Too inconsistent really since then.
