Matchday Thread Portsmouth v PNE | 30.08.25 | KO:3pm | Championship

Absolute nothing of a game where neither side deserved three points.

Unfortunately, again in my opinion, the 3 at the back system hindered us as we created very little of note throughout the game. It just seems we are so easy to defend against when using this system against the ‘lesser’ mid table sides in the division, who invariably are happy to concede possession.

352 has its uses as was evident V Leicester and Ipswich to a degree as we can be solid and offer a counter as these teams tend to be more on the front foot.

We have played 2 promotion faves and won and 2 lower half championship sides and picked up 1 point which is disappointing when you consider the 6 points gained were almost bonus points.

Disappointing performance and result, topped off by disappointing tactics for me today - also why not change shape or take a CB off in the final 10 mins and give it more of a go?!?!
Disappointing performance, result and tactics,we have one plan it would seem away from home and when it fails,it did for most of last season,PH does not have a back up plan,as per today.🙄🙁

So who would you have selected and how would you have got them playing well enough on the field to change things to hammer this very average Pompy team. Just asking …. Checking for your magic solution …
I would have brought Carrol on with Dobbin and Mads.

A draw would've been a fair result but their defending got them the three points. Ogilvie and Shaughnessy really shut down our right flank and the strikers just weren't inclusive today. Like said above, chalk and cheese compared to last season's Fratton Park visit. Frustrating game but not a bad loss by any means.
Mads looked up for it when he came on, too. He was constantly around where the ball was being played trying to get involved and carried the ball himself as opposed to Thordarson chucking away possession with attempted through balls to a static runner.
I'm beginning to see why Watford fans don't like Jebbison. I'm willing to give him more time but he's a frustrating watch

No fuss from me yet.

Every goal we’ve conceded in the league has been really unlucky.

I thought we’d lose today even before the squad was announced.

At least we made a meal of it in the second half.

That’s the thing though, I wouldn’t say I’m being ‘positive’.

I more than acknowledge that for the majority of the first half, we were poor. But we worked some really good areas in the second half, got down the sides of them, but just lacked that final bit.

And then I also take into account the factors involved in today. No Milly, Devine, Potts, Brady, then Jebbison, Mads, and Dobbin aren’t fully fit. Folk should take a step back rather than get all angry when a cross is slightly overhit.
Missing players is fully acknowledged, but it’s the intention of the play that I struggle with. 2-3 passes between defenders and Iversen and then it’s launched. And we do it over and over again. This type of football does not work.
Whenever we play, we actually look OK. Move the ball quickly and get Pol and Thierry in isolated positions against the fullbacks. That’s how we can look good and dangerous.

I’m slightly starting to question Heckys appointment.
I really enjoyed the Leicester and Ipswich games and the atmosphere inside Deepdale, the first time in a long while.
How ever all our away performances QPR, Barrow and today have been pretty poor and little to no improvement on our away performances from last season.
Let's see where we are after 10-12 games, but I ain't a big fan of some of his football, formations and tactics, the jury is still out at present in my view.🙄

Correct, but sometimes launching it to your target man and then winning the second ball makes sense. Portsmouth often pressed with three, so look for smudge, land on the second, then get it out wide.

We did that a few times. It’s a misconception on this forum that it’s an easy game and everything should be on the floor.

It’s an old adage but indulge me - win your home’s and draw your aways and you will always be in and around - as you rightly say the home games feel quite positive but aways not so - lots to do in that department.
I’d imagine a lot of work regarding the physiology of the game will be discussed over the next few weeks in the camp

You are correct that if we could follow that old adage win at home and draw away,we would be there or there abouts.
An odd win and positive , attacking away performance would be good once in a while.👍
