It's a strange one isn't it; I can imagine AB being the consummate professional on and off the pitch - setting the right standards and making the absolute most of his ability.

There's a lot to be said for that and (like we saw when Grezza/Paul McKenna left) the culture can easily slide when those big characters disappear.

But it's hard to think of a game where AB rallied the team, handed out a few bollockings and made a huge difference to a result.

On the other hand, the Number One North End captain in my lifetime is Sean Gregan by a country mile.

Greegs was hardly exactly the 'consummate professional' off the pitch (😅), but - blimey! - his influence on it was off the scale.

No matter the opposition (including World Cup winners), his attitude was: 'Who the f*** are you? And what are you doing on our pitch? F*** off!'

Proper player, proper captain. 👊

I seem to remember him trying it once late in a game away against the Lashers, and he got sent off. You're right, he was more of a 'try to lead by example' than a distributor of bollockings.

You have it bang on Sid..... No of course he wasn't a "great " Captain but you couldn't fault his efforts in trying to lead by example. Good, honest lad and servant to the club. It's a bit sad to see this argument to be honest..... He's gone and we should all wish him well ( he deserves it) and leave it at that.

Tbf there’s an awful lot of adjectives between great and terrible.

He probably falls slap bang in the middle of them. To be terrible I’d assume you have to actually hinder your team. He’s definitely not been a terrible captain. He’s also not been a great captain. There’ll be plenty better and plenty worse.

I agree he’s probably not a terrible captain. However he is definitely not up there as one of our best. We have certainly had better ones in recent years.

Terrible was harsh. Maybe average?

In all fairness I probably said terrible to wind a few people up. And it almost worked.

Id say he didn't stand out much.
 
Don’t get the argument that he’s a shit captain. What exactly has he shown to make him be considered a shit leader. He’s just walked into Sunderland and after about 2 weeks he’s already captaining games for them. If 4 managers so far have seen him as a fit and proper leader then he most likely is…
 
Can we close this thread now? The saga is resolved and he isn't our player now. Is there any point in having this still open?
