Ali McCann

Ali McCann

I'm glad players in his position stay under the radar, especially ones who don't take set pieces or score goals. He should be playing for a much better team.

Love Ali McCann he's generally great but today, he went from standout to really poor over the last 15 minutes (if you include the 6 minutes).
For whatever reason the Team generally collapse in the latter stages, hence the number of last stage goals against.
Ali today just epitomised that, for whatever reason instead of stepping up to protect the lead they start doing relatively lazy, just hoping to see time out.
I am a McCann fan but for 80 minutes he was his usual 8+ performer, but his last 10 to 15, he was a 3, otherwise he would have been MOM.
But its those latter minutes that have been making the difference this Season - and sadly and disappointingly to me he didn't step up to the plate, when we needed him too, and did 2 or 3 things that could have worked out worse for us.

I saw it rather differently to that. Absolutely 10/10 for the big majority of that match. If his level dropped in the last 15 - having covered every blade of grass, at high pace, then it was only down to an 8.

Good to see him maintaining good levels. Imagine if he could add a few goals to his game too - that’s the next step. Should really have scored last night so the intent and ability to get into positions is there, just needs to finish them off.

Same as he was when we signed him, unfortunately.

Always been excellent defensively, and disappointing when getting into good positions in the final third. I was really hoping that side of his game would develop.

Even though I’d love McCann to add goals to his game, to me he’s that midfielder who shouldn’t need rely on goals and should continue to focus more on what he’s good at and chip in now and then, like the goal against Watford at home.

I hope to see the likes of Thordarson to start improving his G/A involvements. Ledson has done that and he’s contributed more off the bench and with less overall minute than Thor.

I mean he's a good defensive midfielder. He was already that when we signed him. Given his age and his mobility, it wouldn't be unreasonable to hope that he could develop a better eye for a pass, or more goal threat in the years he's been playing here.

Playing him higher up, as we did last night, makes us a much more potent pressing team, but it means he is in dangerous positions when we are able to win the ball high. It would be very helpful if he could add that to his game.

Thor is definitely better playing deeper, collecting the ball and using his eye for a pass to push us up the field. Defensively he's not great though, despite his size, which is why he and Ali kinda need one another.

Fair enough, I’m fairly against the negativity about his passing ability though 😂

Agreed, its not going to be his main focus but chances like the two he had in the first half (the second one in particular) really should be put away.

I agree but I’d say there’s still a great chance that he’ll improve his passing and shooting skills under PH/SM especially if he’s given a decent run in the advanced position he played yesterday and if the team’s attacking play remains around that level.

Maybe he just needs to improve his composure slightly when those opportunities arise.

I’m sure that most of our players will make some gradual improvements now they’re working under good coaches and playing to clear strategies.
