League games under BD.......played 87 for 152 pts, ave pts per game 1.75, projected total for a 46 game season......approx 80pts.

The rest since BD left.......played 252 for 329 pts, ave pts per game 1.30, projected total for a 46 game season.....approx 60pts.

Nothing else matters if we are being adult about this.

Can you make it a New Years resolution to stop posting pointless stats?

As a big fan of Davies (for all his obvious faults) I'd still suggest a bit of context is necessary

He inherited a team that was superb on paper, but lacking a bit of orgnisation/fitness. He brought those and made us one of the best four sides outside the Premier League. In the 05-06 season, we conceded fewer goals than runaway champs Reading and it was great to have a defence that was so mean.

Makes the bizarre selection vs Leeds in the playoffs that bit harder to understand.

Simpson destroyed his good work IMO.
Irvine got results initially but at a premium. Failed to get maximum yield from his resources and deserved to go (although the manner of the dismissal lacked class).
Ferguson - had a bit of a duff hand, but his team should never have been relegated.
Brown - like a low-budget equivalent of Irvine. Still had greater resources than nearly all of league one and did not use or respect them.

So was Davies the best of those five? Yes - though it should be qualified by mentioning 1) the brilliant hand Craig Brown dealt him and 2) his 'temperament issues'.

Listened to him a bit as a pundit on 5 Live recently - not bad at all...

Past performance is no guarantee of future performance. The likes of Joe Royle and even the great Brian Clough prove that.

Davies has been manager at 4 clubs and has fallen out with the chairman/directors at every one. His only real success has been to get Derby promoted and the following season his performance in the Premiership was pathetic. He bottled the Play Offs twice with us and twice with Forest. His team selection and behaviour in the Leeds home leg was bizarre to say the least and had the hallmark of a man who had lost it. The way he treated the club and the fans when he left was a total disgrace and showed a complete lack of respect. 'Billy Davies', as he often refers to himself, in the third person, cares only about Billy Davies. I have serious doubts about his stability.

Hemmings has made some serious errors of judgement as regards PNE; to re-appoint Davies would be his biggest by far.

I guarentee you were not saying the 1.75 pts per game he was getting whilst managing PNE was a pointless stat.

How about five attempts at getting his team into the championship play offs in five attempts then? (Excluding as I was reminded by JD that he spent the first half season at Forest helping them avoid relegation).

Is that another "pointless stat"? No it isn't, so bog off.

Billy's record of creating well-organised, phyically strong and competitive units that 'win football matches' is hard to argue with.

The strange thing about him is he almost wants to cast himself as a chequebook manager when he could be every chairman's dream if he allowed it to happen.

I hope his time out of football has perhaps brought a bit of humility to the fella, but maybe I'm being optimistic?

You write about him bottling play offs but when he first took control of PNE we had just 4 pts from the first 5 games and were languishing very close to bottom place in the division..................but all you can do is point out that he bottled the play offs?

What would you have preferred that season, a 46 game battle to retain championship status?

Clap trap! It may not be a guarantee of future success but past success surely can demonstrate competence, especially when it is pretty constant.

If you really feel that his only real success was at derby then you need your head testing.

He inherited a fine squad at Preston but managed to add to it very well and instill discipline, both tactically and in particular, off the field, where Craig Brown could not. We made the play offs twice in a row with some fantastic displays and showing the opposition no respect.

He left for a Detby team in disarray and turned them around again adding shrewdly to the playing staff. Promotion followed.

Then he was appointed at Forest and completely turned them around from near relegation to two play off campaigns. What has happened to all clubs since pretty much shows what they are missing.

He is a superb manager. I'd be much happier if he were to return, than crossing my fingers that a rookie might turn out good.

What we have a deepdale is a squad full of youth, inexperience and a distinct lack of quality. They need a leader of men in charge. Billy is that man.

Your opinion and you are of course entitled to it, as I am to mine, without you questioning my sanity. Talking of which....I notice you've chosen to ignore my comments regarding his character/stability. The man is an egomaniac. Put him and Ridsdale together and I am convinced it will end in tears.

He also lost ormerod to a broken leg within minutes which completely altered his game plan but people forget that.

As a fan of Billy I should say:- when hearing that team line-up vs Leeds I wondered what the hell was going on. We'd made great headway by nicking one and two goal victories all that season and here we were with four centre forwards on the field, none of whom were renowned for their defensive qualities.

I remember thinking "who's gonna get the ball back when we lose it?".

Leeds were a very poor side, as their lack of goals in the 10 games beforehand, 0-3 demolition against Watford and subsequent relegation showed. In the first 20 mins of that second half, they ran riot against us, scored twice and could have had more.

Whatever Billy's plan was that night, it was the wrong one.

I would have preferred him not to have bottled two Play Off campaigns and to have got us promoted. Of course, he blamed lack of financial backing (as he did at Derby and Forest), conveniently ignoring the fact that we were clearly a superior team to West Ham, who we had already beaten twice that season and yet completely froze in the final.
