Unfortunately your asking for the impossible, unless he beats 3 men and scores from 35 yards every time he gets the ball people will give him abuse.

Surely cheering him loudly "whatever he produces" will be indistinguishable from ironic cheers?
 
There really is very little mystery about Humphrey. He has a good attitude, always gives 100 per cent, is very fast and also fairly strong. But he lacks - or very rarlely shows - trickery with or imaginative use of the ball. He does very well when tracking back to help the defence but so far has been only intermittently effective as an attacker. In general he is poor when he receives the ball well back towards the halfway line and sets off to attack from a standing start but when he gets passes he can run onto much nearer the opposition penalty area then he can be a danger. He was very good last season at the defensive side of that 'wing-back' role in front of a back three but given that that formation is, frankly, a bit over-cautious and that this season SG seems to want us to impose ourselves with a more attacking formation home and away then he is going to have to become a more consistent attacking threat. This 4.3.3 formation with Humphrey much further forward than last season is the formation that makes that most likely - which is what I said last season. He made a start on Saturday against admittedly fairly poor opposition. It is now upto Humphrey to continue in the same way against tougher opposition.

Agreed, no excuses this time around if he is played further forward he has to start producing especially when Reid is fit as well.

Humphrey has all the attributes to wear down his opponent, blistering pace and a very dangerous cross on him. The wing-back role suited him very well last season and to chip in with 5 assists and 3 goals from a very defensive minded position is not a bad return at all. Humphrey may not have set the world alight last year in terms of going forward, but he never left his man short and in my opinion was one of the reasons we only lost 7 all season.

What a goal that was from Humphrey.

The goal that stood was a cracker as well.

No surprise that Ben Davies looked nowhere near as bad a player when Humphrey swapped with Gallagher.

Gally offered nothing going forward nor did he give Davies an ounce of protection.
 
Remember Rankine. Took a season to come good.

A good player needs to be consistently good though, see if he can keep this level of performance up.

Now,on to Humphrey. As you can see from my post,i will be more than happy if he becomes a decent regular and pivotal performer for us, as it stands I'm not going to get all excited, like you seem to be doing, about a couple of decent games !

Every team needs a workhorse. Humphrey is that for us. Nothing fancy, but can do the basics. The fact his defensive side is great is of huge benefit to us. There was a moment at scunthorpe in the first half whrn they put us under early pressure, he got the ball at the edge of our box and basically ran the length of the pitch with it. Again nothing fancy nut instantly the pressure on us was released. These players never get the credit they deserve, but are key to a successful team. The fact he is now chipping in with some goals too is an added bonus

The phrase is you do the math. It is not and never has been you do the maths.

A localised old fashioned substitute could be - you do the sums, you do the calculations, or you work it out (you lazy twit).

I liked what Humphrey did in his few minutes on the pitch at Rochdale (the only game I have been at this year) and liked what he was doing last year.
