Gentry Day 2022 - Dedication, memories, tributes.

My father Ken Slater who passed away in January. Formerly of Ribchester but moved to Kent in 1977. Loved PNE and (unfortunately!) introduced me to PNE and now my son is PNE mad. He attended a few away games each year, Forest away being his last in November.
A great man who taught me much in life and left a wonderful legacy through his Christian faith. One day I'll be with him again with God in Heaven. Love you Dad.

M brother Michael Patrick Whelan. Took me to my first game FA Cup replay V Liverpool in 64? After he married he still lived on Greenlands and we walked along the railway to Deepdale .. there and back ..

I think we did play Liverpool in the Cup in the early 60s but it wasn't in 63-64 run to Wembley. Have no difficulty picturing you getting onto railway line and then walking along it towards Deepdale. Would you have got off it where it went under Blackpool Road?

That’s what I used to do from Gamull Lane in the 80’s , obviously disused by then….

Each year we have made a donation on behalf of our members to a local charity in memory of The Gentry.

I usually keep this private but wanted to promote the cause this time around.

We are delighted to sponsor a match at the Preston Schools Finals which is being held at Deepdale.

This not only shows our support for the PNE players of the future but also those who give up their free time to support them.

If anyone would like to contribute to this you can do so via our donation page.

For reasons I won't go into I was back in Preston just over a couple of weeks ago and as I drove along Blackpool Road I noted the slight bump in the road that was obviously once the bridge over where the tracks where. Anyhow as you were moving along the tracks towards Deepdale I was moving in the same direction in parallel with you to your right through Ronaldsway and Holme Slack. I suppose we joined up when we reached Lowthorpe Road.

My grandfather James Barry Duckworth (Barry to everyone), who sadly left us on the 1st April this year aged 77. We found he had been suffering from Pulmonary Fibrosis during the past couple of years. He was an amazing gentleman who was able to watch the club during the 1950s and 1960s, sharing with me at a family wedding a few years ago his stories of just how good Sir Tom was alongside other firm favourites like the Black Prince Alex Dawson.

On the day we said goodbye I attached my North End soul pin badge to his cardigan as a small token to take with him. He is laid to rest at Preston cemetery just a few hundred yards facing his long time home on Braefield crescent in Ribbleton.

I already miss you so much, I couldn't have asked for a better grandad to help shape the person I've grown to be.

I knew a Barry Duckworth many years ago. Was his home as a youngster in Cedar Road Ribbleton?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, he had numerous siblings, a brother called Tony was one of my best mates.

My best mate, Mick Baron, who passed away in January this year. We were Ambassadors together on the STFS until covid came along.

My Mum and Dad who passed away some years ago now, who introduced me to PNE as a young child.

I had thought that I was the first generation of my family to be born in Preston, but I recently found out that my Mum's paternal Grandma was born in Preston, and she and her brothers and parents were living here in 1881 - so I'm hoping that at least one of them were following the Invincibles too. 😁

I remember Mick , i bumped into you and Mick a few times over the years ... usually in a pub !

He was a great lad and he liked a good pint didnt he....

I will be thinking of Mick on Gentry Day

My ex-Father-in-Law who died in 2004 ( On the day we beat Coventry 4-0 )

Although he followed North End religiously via Radio Lancs until the day he died , he would never accept that
anyone was better than Tom Finney...

One day i was trying to wind him up ( Jokingly ) and i suggested that Ryan Giggs was as good as Finney to which he replied " Aye, he probably is, but then again Finney is 70 years old now !! "

GENTRY DAY

The away match at Barnsley on Saturday 30th April 2022 has been voted as the date for this years annual Gentry Day.

Whilst our supporters are enjoying themselves on the day it is right to remember what Gentry Day is all about, which is remembering members of the North End & Preston community who are no longer with us.

We are bitterly disappointed that South Yorkshire Police refused to police this match unless it was a 12:30pm Kick Off.

The football club have put on subsidised coaches to help as many of our fans to attend as possible.

We are sure that we won't allow SYP to curtail our unique tradition and it will be celebrated fully.

Once again PNE-Online are proud to support Gentry Day and as ever we have this dedicated thread for users to post the names, memories or stories of people you would wish to be remembered by the Preston North End supporters on Gentry Day at Oakwell.

Feel free to post as much or little detail as you like and everyone who will be donning their bowlers will do so in their memory.

My dad Barry Holt. Used to watch Finney in his prime in the 50s. Told me all about North End. Captained Preston School Boys in his day. And played a final at Deepdale. Went to Trinity School.

He died in 2007 of bowel cancer and laughed and loved all till the end.

Proud Prestonian. Alot of story's as you can imagine. They don't make them like that anymore.

Lots of Mad North End Family in Lancs still, but I live abroad. He got me into North End.

Love you dad.
