Heckingbottom

I hope the heat persists on the hierarchy even if there’s a change of manager.

What 'heat' has there been? Some of us moaning on PNE online? Some angry boos at the end of games?

When Craig releases his amazing end of season statement everyone on FB just says 'very true' and moves on. Ridsdale goes on every game and nothing is seemingly said to him.

That's all hard to argue with, but it still begs the question, why persevere with a manager who clearly can't cope with the constraints at the club? He's done a shit job here, and could have been sacked twice. He'd be gone if the price to sack him was low enough.
Whilst it is hard to hear, under the constraints at the club I honestly think any manager who keeps us in the division is doing a good job.

We often start well but with the limitations of the squad it isn’t sustainable; hence the drop offs in form.

I have seen glimpses from Hecky to believe he is a good manager, but I think the club has beaten him and he will need to be moved on…

Not sure if I cba watching the next manager go through the same…

The main issue is we'll employ someone else who other Championship clubs have no interest in. Ones just happy to pick up an average Championship wage with no pressure to aim higher.

The budget is an easy excuse. Plenty of other clubs have found managers who beat the odds.

Everything is just so lazy. We'd be sponsored by some glue factory for the next three years if the Spud Bros management team didn't approach us.

I wish we'd outsource our managerial recruitment like we do our food, kits, and everything else.

@Warton PNE

Good post but Lowe had us 13th, 12th and 10th.

Only the one Top 10 finish.

Kill for 10th right now.
You know it’s bad when people are wishing Lowe was back

Is Hecky the right man? Probably not but I couldn’t care if he left today I feel so empty about the club.

We have a team of plodders that have been here too long. Hughes, storey, whiteman, Lindsay, Brady, Potts ….. we give them contract extensions but nobody ever comes in for our players. You know why? Because they aren’t good enough.

Look at milwall, similar to us and have done player trading to get within touching distance of second. We’ve got our serial failures once again plummeting down the league. You only had to see the reaction to the first goal last night that reflects the mentality of the squad.

PH was right it needs a bomb under it. I’m not arsed if he’s taken out as well but as long as you’ve PR and the hemmings at the helm nothing will ever chsnge

The place is rotten. The match day experience is rotten. Look at Coventry before the game last night with the place buzzing to their anthem. We’ve got Wallace and fucking grommit because it mentioned something about Blackpool in it. Fucking tin pot.

Things are they desperate we are playing a keeper who can’t kick, no decent back up (nobody say Cornell please) and a squad of rejects from the bottom club and loans that have checked out.

We are in a dire place.

Has anybody really wished that Lowe was back ?

Some good points Ken. The player trading one is a really good point. It’s something a club like ours needs to do. Sell players on and reinvest in the squad. We don’t really have the players to do that at present…and with the current regime I’m not convinced we’d reinvest even if we did get money for players.

Going back as far as Jordan hugill is a good example for me. Get 10 million for him and replace him with Louis moult for 500k. How can you possibly be expected to be successful with that sort of ‘reinvestment’! It’s no wonder managers get pissed off after 18 months to 2 years here. Then the cycle starts again with a new manager who comes in believing he can break the mould, until realises he is pissing against the wind aswell.

I’m not making PH blameless, or any manager we’ve had for that matter, but for me, unless we get some significant investment to compete for a better quality of player, us north end fans will continue to have the same conversations we’ve had since time began!

Of course it can be done, but it would be against all odds. It is becoming increasingly more difficult too given the amount of money involved.

Look at Wrexham for example - probably spent more this season than we have spent over the past 10 years combined, yet they are still not guaranteed promotion.

Fans state that a manager taking over North End knows the financial limitations when they take the job, but fuck me it must be demoralising

Get them an interview and tell them the budget - they'd be out the room before you finish reading out the number.

And they're shit.

We can't even attract shit managers.
Hear me out:
(FWIW I’m not saying they’ll come)

Lampard post derby was shite. But sometimes it just works at a club, they’re not shit, managerial sackings are far more common these days.

But we have to change the narrative around us hiring managers, not backing them financially and then they down tools, so for arguments sake let’s say we got a gerrard type of mould.

He’s local, needs to rebuild his managerial career he’s not shit if he won the league with Rangers, yes it’s a 2 club league but you still have to set the team up to first and foremost win.

But we’re never going to attract top players, we’re not going to pay big money, so having an influential manager who can bridge the gap of finances would work,

He’s arguably one of the best motivators in football, not manager obvs, but motivation wise we need to find someone who can motivate what’s here without the need to spend top money.

I think sometimes there’s just good fits and hand on heart I do believe it would work with him here. Because the current cycle isn’t working clearly so go for a different approach in manager!

All that said he wouldn’t come here anyway 🤣 but still.

No doubt. But the average lifespan for a manager is about 18 months these days, about enough time to see if he's long-term option. Rinse and repeat. It might be worse or it might be better, other clubs take the risk for ambition's sake.

Talking about fans needing to get behind the players is a bit strange. The support they’ve had has been great and I defy anyone to say they didn’t deserve stick after last Friday. I suppose he hasn’t gone as far as the captain in saying we don’t understand the game.
Did Whiteman say that? Have I read it right? The fans don’t understand the game? Or the team don’t understand the game? Or maybe it’s both ? 🤔

Waiting for the usual nonsense post match interview.

"The goals were all mistakes, all errors, so you're never going to win games if you give goals away like that. We've gifted the game to Coventry but they're a good side - it would have been hard enough anyway not doing that"

His time is up, tactically inept, hasn't got a clue what to do when his mediocre plan A doesn't work.
Maybe the crucial question for any prospective manager is, ‘do you have a plan B?’

Totally agree, although Lampard was showing much more promise as a manager than Gerrard. We need someone who improves players, with the finances we have we’re never going to be able to buy the finished article. Has this bloke improved any players? Maybe Offiah but I would suggest nobody else. The drop off in Small has been marked, our awful midfield from last year is still awful, the loan players have dropped right off etc.

If we’re going to achieve anything we need someone who improves players and/or to do something different - which is why I advocated Barry Murphy or Skubala. I take on board the point about the rinse and repeat process but he’s been here 18 months or so and we haven’t improved - even with the benefit of two top notch loan signings in Devine and Dobbin and one of the best goalkeepers in the league.

The problem with owners that don’t care is that they also don’t care what people say to or think of them.

Might as well talk to a wall. People are worn out.

💯 this.

Hecky is far from blameless; he looks lost and sounds defeated at the moment, repeating the same old cliches without an ounce of inspiration.

His tactics and substitutions are increasingly baffling and - as we saw last season - he’s not great at pulling us out of these losing streaks.

But we need context, given everything that’s wrong at North End:

Disinterested, absent owners, who couldn’t care less about where we finish and invest the bare minimum.

A mediocre squad cobbled together from loans, crocks, cast-offs and players who should have left years ago.

An infrastructure that would have looked dated 10 years ago.

A matchday experience that League 2 clubs put to shame.

A pitch that wouldn't look out of place on Moor Park.

And a fan base treated with contempt, while supporting 'Britain's most boring club'.

No player with any serious ambition signs for us.

And no manager does either.

I'm not saying someone else couldn't be better than Hecky (some of the stats are horrendous), but given the state of the club and all the problems listed above, we're going to to have to find a miracle worker to achieve genuine success.

Far more likely that PH departs by mutual consent this summer and the whole wretched cycle starts again. 🙄

Without the mythical new ownership, we'll be circling the plughole for the foreseeable future, awaiting the inevitable. 🙁
