Heckingbottom

I’d like to think that the club are starting to look at underlying data these days.

I know that some people don’t like it, but it’s very important in judging a side and how they are likely to perform over a season.

Currently, we are 22nd in regards to xG created (we create nothing). We are also 22nd in regards to xGA (we let opposition create loads). Our expected points also puts us in the bottom 3.

(For people who think xG table is nonsense, Coventry, Ipswich, Boro and Southampton are all in the same places in the xG table as they are in the actual Championship table).

I’d argue with Dobbin, Devine, Osmajic, Jebbison, Small, we should be creating a hell of a lot more than we are currently. Lang will obviously come back at some point and I think the management of Lukovic has been absolutely abysmal, but we should still be creating more than teams like Oxford, Charlton etc.

We are also known for being quite ‘resolute’ at the back, atleast in previous seasons. Again, we are shipping a huge amount of chances and it’s thanks to Iversen that we aren’t in the bottom 3 (he is in the top 6% of keepers in the league when it comes to goals prevented).

All of this to me points towards us being very badly coached and having a manager who does not excel either offensively or defensively.

I was never excited by the appointment in the first place. It was the usual ‘steady’ appointment, however, he’s been anything but that and he’s actual had us close to relegation, arguably twice.

Hopefully this takeover gets done and Mr Zedan hires people who know what they are doing and realise we need a new, progressive young coach with fresh ideas rather than some tedious, rigid, turgid, 3-5-2 merchant who plays garbage football.
i have some trepidation with the Xg - but i also enjoy listening to those who no more than i do and are better informed - your point is very well made here - i should for one take more attention to said numbers

I cant even argue with the points being made about him.

Absolutely terrible management of Offiah today for example, the poor lad is flogged out at RWB and then taken off at half time.

Meanwhile Jordan Storey gets absolutely bullied for 90 mins against Kone and was crap on the ball.
Storey looked ,like he had been on the piss all night. terrible display didn't know what day it was, constantly caught out didn't know how to mark Kone.

we need a new manager for next season, plus hopefully new owners

But he has had to shop in the bargain basement.
Agree with that but he must have been involved in extending the contracts of Lindsay, Brady, Potts etc. Move them on and free up some space to wheel & deal. Bringing an injured Thompson in & Lukovic as well have been poor errors of judgement, as is splashing all the available cash on an injured Lang who he may well have got for nothing in the summer

I really want Lang to come good ……

I know that he has had injury issues but there is definitely a good player in there , if he can keep fit.

Sure he is a top player Ando, but the 2nd part is the big if and did we need to buy him in January rather than the summer? Not sure of the stats, but he must have missed more games than he has been available for

Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure that he has ….

They are if you want to be chancing a play-off place. I bet that Norwich, Southampton, Hull, Millwall, etc wouldn’t be where we are with our bottom 3 budget
Maybe but their form wouldn’t have nose dived as much as it has with us.
This is the excuse ridsdale came out with and now Hecky and Lowe. ‘We have the third lowest budget. We are over achieving.’ It’s on the manager to get more out of the players and he just isn’t.

Do you think he could have got more out of Cornel or Wharton all those weeks when Iverson was out injured? Or get much more out of Whiteman, Storey, Lindsey or Hughes?

We just don’t have that much strength in depth but is that down to PH or our owners?

I think he could drop storey and play offiah but he just won’t.
I think he can give Moran more minutes.
It’s down to PH that we spent most of the budget on an injury prone player.
The budget excuse is used as an excuse ti defend poor performances.

Some players yes.

But Moran, small, offiah, lang plus the loanees aren’t exactly bargain basement.

Offiah was the big money signing in the summer and he was what just over a million with many add ons to Brighton?

Probably the biggest signing of the season is Lang really with his age as that is more "proven" than many players this club signs. However injuries are already biting with him.

However most top half clubs at this level would laugh at 1-2m being described as anything but bargain basement. Millwall spend 5m on CFs these days.

But Millwall have a much smaller net spend than us in the summer. Infact they made a profit. The difference being they sold a player for big money and reinvested it. All this ‘well we can’t compete with Millwall as they bought a player for 5 million.’ We can they just managed to sell a player double that.

Understood your point about transfer fees but I think people look too much into this. Offiah and moran arent bargain basement signings. They are signings which have the potential to make a profit on. These are the type of players we should be going for.

We are doing the reinvesting part but not selling any players for big money. That’s the issue right there.

The main issue at this club is Peter ridsdale but then that points the fingers at the owners because the are complicit in allowing him as much control as he has.

That is more an issue of the owners and the lack of selling of any assets than it is of the recruitment team and manager.

If they don't have that kind of a pot to play with, then there's a smaller pool of players available compared to others who can spend more because they've made more money. Hence the fees we were paying are still small for this league which is what the point was.

The entire league, bar the four in the current bottom four and Hull, had a higher overall spend and also spent more on an individual player than we did on our biggest. Oxford may actually be more than us or at least close to us too. So it is pretty bargain basement relative to the league.

I know what his point is. I’m just pointing out that’s it is down to ridsdale to bring in them players to sell for a profit.

Coventry (for example) haven’t suddenly become this high spending over achieving championship club. It’s all in the plan. It’s about bringing in the right players and selling them for a profit. Gykores only cost them 1.7 million yet they made about 20-30 million on him.

This is where we fail as a club. Yes we could spend more money but we need to be using the transfer market better in order to make that money. Offiah, Moran and small are the right calibre of players to be looking at. Bringing in a player like lang isn’t.

I blame both ridsdale and the owners but Ridsdale is more at fault imo.

I can understand that if you have a good youth set up or you drop lucky and pick up a young player and he turns out to be worth 20 mill, you sell that one player and your squad of 25 which has a dozen or so good players can be improved by using some of that dosh.

If you start off like we do with a squad of 25 that has 5 decent players, 5 loans and 15 league one or two players (as we are at the moment) and you sell you sell 2 of your decent players for 2 mill each and the other 3 leave ooc and the loans go back, replace them with young players that could come good or be another Bayliss types but won't be worth anything for a while, you could end up in league two quite quickly.

I guess all I am saying is that even if the new owner is 100% better than the IOM it will take a bit of time and patience to get where we need to be.

Not sure at this moment in time is the right time to sell any of our decent players that would be required to give us a reasonable chance of stability while a more top end squad is assembled. Just a thought.

P S. just tried an edit and it didn't work, just realised that my patron badge has disappeared even though I had notification I had paid, is there a glitch in the system? 🙂
