Heckingbottom

Waddle is a really good co commentator on the wireless but there is no chance Celtic would even look at our manager - which is what Waddle is saying rather than the headline of they should appoint him.

“Should be looking”. I don’t suspect they are. He does have his admirers elsewhere though.

Presume these admirers have appeared with uncertainty around his job here if the takeover goes through and the new owners are unsure on him. Agent gets him linked to X,Y,Z clubs to show he is in demand and for PNE to commit to him

He'd likely get the control he wants there. Last I heard regardless of takeover, he wants full control over signings, rather than working under a Sporting Director/ DoF, which is something the new ownership want.
He could be on his way out then…..

I believe he stays for now under a new ownership. Demanding assurances regardless, something I posted the other day as well was, I had originally believed he was on a rolling contract but, and I am not 100% sure on it but I have been told he actually signed a 3 year deal back in 2024, meaning he'd only have a year left. With all this uncertainty, there is clubs supposedly keen and keeping an eye on it.

We need a full reset and to start acting like a 21st century football club.

If Heckingbottom can’t get behind that then off you pop.

Bye then. Very few managers are bigger than the club, and the manager with the poorest finishing position in recent memory absolutely isn’t one of those.

And with some of his transfer decisions, I don’t want him anywhere near controlling signings

I'd say the better, long-term signings of last summer (Iversen, Offiah, and Small) were unlikely to be his recommendations. Whereas the likes of Walton, Thompson, and Valentin most probably were.

A sporting director is exactly what we need, not a pair of dinosaurs bringing in their ex-players, Championship 'experience', and no-fuss guys with Sheffield connections.

Their first signing being Josh Bowler sums it up. I guess McCall knew him from his spell with the lashers.

I think you’ll be hard pushed to find anyone disagreeing with this. Spot on.

Would you trust him with a bit of money?

If true, surely Heckingbottom isn't that stupid to be throwing his weight around and making demands on any potential new owners already.

For fucks sake, he very nearly got us relegated the season before last and it wasn't far off squeeky bum time again last season.

If he is kept on, he should count himself as lucky...if he doesnt lm not arsed in the slightest.

Small I believe was someone the back room staff and PR really wanted, PR to his credit, made it aware very early on to Smalls camp they wanted him and kept it constant contact about him, watched him many times

Someone I know Hecky really pushed for was Lang.

If I remember rightly ( so a Lasher once told me, not fact checked it) it was under Bowlers first time at the lashers where he played his best football and that was partly down to McCall apparently, giving him that belief, which he thought he could try and work with here to recreate, at the time the budget was more or less gone for some reason 🙄. There was other hidden reasons that Bowler didn’t succeed anywhere following his move to Forest. That I won’t share. He also regretted signing for us quite quickly.

I completely agree with getting a sporting director and having them oversee transfers but Heckingbottom's transfer business with the club has largely been good so I'm willing to defend him in this regard. I think some folks just don't like him and want to present everything he does as bad even though he and his team had to perform a squad overhaul with no budget. People have a habit of getting annoyed we signed certain players (e.g. Michael Smith) but there's clear thought behind each signing, it's just we're restricted on the quality due to the budget. With the budget we've been operating with, every manager is damned to signing cheap players. We're panning for gold in a dry river bed meanwhile a bunch of other people up river have large teams doing all the work for them. Heckingbottom doesn't get every signing right but literally no manager does. He's still largely done well in this area though. I would still rather a sporting director be in charge ultimately because we need that stability across multiple managers.
