The attitude towards match officials from fans, players and management in this country is appalling.
Football must be unique as a sport in terms of how commonplace abuse of the match officials is.
The majority of officials are perfectly fine, and they all get treated like dogshit. And no I’ve never been a ref.
It’s unique in that there is absolutely no ownership of decisions or culpability.
In cricket you have a review system that works well for the most part, though some of the umpires call decisions are a bit frustrating. Apart from the recent Ashes snicko drama, it’s rare you get any honking decisions. The laws are set and applied consistently, every county or country knows where they stand and how the review system works.
In rugby, the officials on the pitch are clear and assertive in their decision making. Clear communication and rationale behind their decision making. I don’t watch it much but I don’t recall ever seeing a decision and thinking it was a terrible call and hearing the thought process behind the decision makes a massive difference.
Then you have football. Referees in the professional game who think they’re as much of a superstar as the players. No clear communication, no consistency and you’re talking about at least one stinking decision per league per gameweek. The level of refereeing quality is in the gutter and the ownership of decisions is even worse. A result can hinge solely on the action(s) of an official yet there’s never any responsibility taken, even when they’ve got Stockley Park looking at it over and over but coming to the wrong decision.
Whenever we get a decent referee, it’s commented on, on the stands and on the forum, whether we win or lose, so it’s not a blind pile-on, no matter who the referee is or what they have done. But that’s the problem, when you have a referee who actually does a decent job, it’s picked up and commented on as the anomaly as opposed to the norm. You speak to any fan across the EPL and EFL and they’ll all tell you the same thing, the quality of refereeing is actually getting worse despite technical advancements in the field of officiating.
