How do you cope/deal with stress?

How do you cope/deal with stress?

Be honest I doubt, But don't be afraid of asking for help. Listen to music. Watch a lot of Comedies and fuck it, its another days problem. Probably bad advice.

Anyways the key is asking for help, use the services that are out there, remember if they not used, they won't be there for others to use.

Me and my Mrs do everything together, so when one of us hits a low, like currently, we sit down and play a game on the PlayStation, it's usually a beat em up, streets of rage 1 to 4 are our go to, it's unreal how it lifts you (but that's just us) if we can't do that we walk, we plan a route and really enjoy the disconnect from the humdrum of everyday life and work stress, the great outdoors really does help.
Used to walk a lot, we had a good route from higher Walton, through Hoghton down the canal to top lock then circle back through denham onto sandy lane and home.
We walked to from higher Walton to rivvy and back once, that was fucking stupid. I couldn't move for days after that 🤣

i really don’t have a go-to method myself. I suppose I am not very good at planning and writing lists -and I occasionally turn to that when there’s too much on. I think I’m not one of the world’s worriers though.
One of my daughters swears by journaling.

Hi Glossop, I've got my own issues as you know. I don't know your circumstances, but I agree with all of the above. Hope you manage to talk to Mrs. G about it. I was nervous about telling my partner but she's been absolutely fantastic in supporting me, don't know where I'd be without her - probably in a church yard pissed! Walking is good, been doing a lot recently. Met an upset bloke in a park the other day with similar problems as me, started chatting and it helped. The only difference was that he hadn't told his partner and was pretending to go to work. Talking does help.
How's your dog doing? - love dogs

Thanks for asking, it means a lot.

Bit short of time for full reply but if I say that I woke at half three and instantly thought of a potential issue at work so went in early to rectify it then I think you'll know where I'm coming from.

Mrs G is an absolute legend and this place too is a big help, and North End doing half decently is a nice bonus.

Dog healing slow but can't get her head round the concept of taking it easy for a bit. Poor thing.

Once again, thanks for asking, take care yourself.

I do post on here but I’ve logged out to reply.

The big issue I find is night time. I take medication for a condition that gives me vivid dreams or nightmares, which can and do wake me up. Then that’s it, any issues come straight into my head and keep me awake and start the thought process up.

I have no medical training etc but I strongly believe that if you can get to sleep and stay asleep you’re on the way to winning the battle. I’ve eliminated the work issues that caused me no end of worry at night but they have been replaced by other (admittedly lesser) worries - fortunately they’re not worrying me as much when I wake up. I also ensure I get up when I wake up, as long as it’s not ridiculously stupid o clock. Getting up at 6, for instance, means that I’m tired come the end of day and can get to sleep relatively quickly most of the time whatever’s happened during the day.

Hi Glossop and Guest 233,
Completely agree about sleeping well.
I still wake up at a stupid time worrying about work, something that I've dreamt up and wanting to go in early, even though I'm out of a job! Glossop I know what it's like.
Take care of yourself

For me at 63, I still go to the gym, spar with people mainly less than half my age and kick the shit out of the heavy bag.
It works wonders.
I've been close numerous times to packing it in but the wife still thinks I need the release.
Don't know what she's trying to tell me😅
On a serious note, exercise works wonders.
It focuses the mind and keeps you healthy.

Wanted to update this thread.

Having some time off work obviously helped over Christmas but have started doing a couple of things which seem to be helping.

First is drawing/scribbling/doodling. Mrs G got me a book on the zentangle method which is great and have made some lovely little doodles but I think I'd need to keep checking a reference book for patterns and styles but since have come across a couple of different geometric styles that I can scribble away at without much need for thought and they seem to be good relaxation.

Second is cold water. Very cold water. Theres a group of blokes who go in the reservoir near where I walk the dog and I asked if I could try it with them one morning.

Not something to do by myself as Mrs G wouldn't let me out the house if I was going solo.

Started going over Christmas and they do a minimum of four minutes whatever the weather whenever they can (I'm not going in the rain, fuck that)

It was very very dark and very very cold and very very intense. Hate it and love it in equal measures but can't stop doing it. Was disappointed when it got snowed off last Saturday as when it was -7 the week before it was the best one yet. Apparently they do up to ten minutes over summer.

The dog swims out to us so it's good for her too. Last weekend she was icing up and all crispy while I was trying to dry myself off. My shorts froze to the ground while I dried her. Good fun!

Didn't look at the science behind it until I'd been a few times. It seems there is some evidence of it's benefits.

I know I feel better, have something to look forward to and have been taking less painkillers. Feel amazing now for the rest of the day.

There's a good listen Here and Here

Long post I know but some of it might benefit someone else hopefully and it's good to share these things I think?

Edit: have been trying the cold showers during the week as I can only get there at weekends, they seem to be worth the unpleasantness too.

Glad to hear a positive update. Does sound like you have made some leaps forward so good for you. Also good that you’ve been able to take the dog along for company

The cold water stuff seems very much in vogue at the moment. There have been a lot of groups sprung up down here to supplement the cold water swimming groups that were here first. There also have suddenly been a bunch of mini-sauna facilities spin up along the coast at various points in like beach huts, where people combine the two therapies to go from either temperature extreme in quick succession. Not sure you’ll be getting anyone popping a sauna next to the reservoir I guess just yet! Shall have a read of the links to see if there is anything to tempt me or I’ll just stay wrapped up at home.

Sooner you than me but glad it works for you😃
Onward and upward.

After the gym, I have a 1 min full body cold shower before warming up a little in warmer water before the sauna then a quick cold before a proper shower afterwards. Always a good do.

The thought of how much better the Scandinavian sauna model is than some dickheads getting hypothermia in a goose piss riddled reservoir on the outskirts of Oldham has occurred to me, but not examining it too closely tbh.

That's how it looked under a full moon the morning after new years day. Ice round the waters edge if you look closely.

Tell me you're not tempted . . . .

The cold/warm cycle is mentioned in some of the Michael Mosley documentaries, quite beneficial apparently.

A minute is supposed to be the magic number.

The shower is more of a shock to the system than the reservoir!

Great to hear Glossop ….

It sounds like it’s benefitting you 👍🏻👍🏻
