Preston North End have made their first signing of the 2013 January transfer window, signing free agent Joe Garner on an 18-month contract.
The 24-year-old had his contract cancelled at Watford and Monday and the Lilywhites moved quickly to capture the services of the former Blackburn Rovers trainee on a deal until at least the summer of 2014, with the option of a further year.

Blackburn-born Garner spent the first half of this season on loan at Carlisle United in League One, scoring eight goals in 17 starts for the Cumbrians, including a penalty at Deepdale in the 1-1 draw in early November.

Despite being born in East Lancs, centre forward Garner is a North End supporter, with his family still Alan Kelly Town End season ticket holders. He has been handed the No.14 shirt and will be available for selection for the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy tie against Coventry City on Thursday.

Speaking about his latest recruit, manager Graham Westley said: “I looked at Joe in the summer and it wasn’t financially viable in the summer for us to strike a deal with his parent club, so we had to leave it along then.

“I kept tabs on him throughout the season and he has obviously gone out and had a strong period on loan at Carlisle.

“He’s a lad stood on the terraces and had a season ticket as a boy and has got a real passion for the Club and has got lots of qualities and the qualities he has got in front of goal are ones that will serve us well and I am excited to have him on board and look forward to seeing him wearing a shirt.”

Yep, congratulations to the club on this one. Not sure that he and Beavon will be a totally natural partnership but it's a massive relief to finally have two good strikers for this level at the club.

I think after the indulgences of the latter Shaw years our days of offering long expensive contracts are over.

Hopefully we can now play 442 and poor Beavon gets a partner. Hes had a hard time has Bev and now i feel he could shine. Unless GW still goes 451 and Bevs on the Bench:-(

Garner At Home At Deepdale

Garner At Home At Deepdale

New signing Joe Garner has admitted he was the most nervous he has ever been on a football pitch when facing the Lilywhites in November.
He lined up for Carlisle United against North End for their League One match on a Tuesday night and scored a penalty in front of the Town End, but he admitted to PNE.Com after completing the paperwork on an 18-month deal that it was a nerve-wracking experience.

“I’m really happy to be here. As soon as I knew the Club were interested in bringing me in, it was the only place I wanted to come.

“I used to have a season ticket here, quite a while back, and I used to come every week. A lot of my family support Preston; my little brother comes to the games and I’m happy to be here.

“I’ve played here this season with Carlisle and I am happy to be back and have signed.

“I have already scored once at Deepdale this season. My family were sat in the Town End when I took that penalty – I think it’s probably the most nervous I have ever been, seeing them sat there and taking a penalty, but I was there to do a job and did that, but now I am here and I am over the moon.”

The new No.14 goes straight into the squad for Thursday’s clash with Coventry City and is looking forward to getting going.

“The manager said he wanted me to sign here; he went through a few things about what he wanted from me and I am happy to be on board.

“I am looking to improve. The harder you work, the more you will improve and if you look at the manager’s record, it is second to none. He did an unbelievable job at Stevenage and he is now bringing his own players in here and it can only get better.

“Thursday is a big tie for the Club. If you can get to the Final of that, it is a great day out for the fans at Wembley and even for the players it is a big event. It is not very often you play at Wembley and hopefully it will be a great game and we can get the victory.”
