Confirmed League Cup 2nd round draw (Home - Wrexham)

My biggest joy is when we beat them 5-0 at the Racecourse. Met up with my future wife( Wrexham fan) and had a few beers in Wrexham. My mate he knows who he is if he reads this waved at Mark Cartwright the wxm keeper that day with 5 fingers outstretched! Funny times now I feel the medicine is coming our way.

We played them 5 times that season, twice in the league cup, twice in the league and once in the Auto Windscreens.

I can't remember which game it was but that fire under the town end was definitely against Wrexham.

Instead of banning smoking, they banned tickertape instead.

The fire was caused because of the build up of it under the terrace, they had never bothered to clean it up.

I remember it being a midweek game, assume as teenager I wouldn't have bothered with league cup or the Auto Windscreens.

Remember turning up for the next home game and they'd just nailed new boards on top of the old knackered ones.

The "fire on the Town End" match was a league game, played 18th March 1997 - was a Tuesday night.

We went behind early doors to a goal by someone who "put the ball in the Blackpool net" but didn't get many more for us despite his goalscoring reputation. David Reeves equalised half way through the first half and Ashy scored the winner on the hour mark.

It was a league game. We won 2-0. Think Reeves scored. Missus checked the score on teletext and it said "game suspended due to fire in stand". No phones then, she assumed I was dead.

I also remember a certain club kicking planks out the top of the Kop and starting a fire in 70's.

What great days they were and what a team. Kidd and Jackson solid at the back, Rankine and Mckenna ratting in the middle, Gregan bossing everywhere, Cartwright and Eyres flying down the wings, Macken and Kurt up front.

Everyone playing with a swagger and a smile on their face, and it rubbed off on the supporters.

That team would thrash the current lot, even though they would all be in their 50s and 60s now 🙂

The only one of our current team i would swap for that one would be Iversen for Leadboots in goal, but at that point Lucas was an England u21 international.
 
Back in the day I had a good mate who was a Wrexham fan and I would go with him to the odd Wrexham away game. Got fed up with the anti-English chants in the end.
They were an odd bunch.
They were once giving their own keeper absolute pelters. Booing and shouting obscenities; poor bloke. The game hadn’t even kicked off.

Brum management pushed the boat out a bit, too.
 
Only time I went to Wrexham was a 0-0 . New main stand was an old condemned wooden shell and the old terrace behind the goal was in use . We had the stand behind the other goal .

Haha, that was Gary Bennett, nicknamed the 'vicar' for his resemblance to one of Dick Emery's many characters..
