Atrocious. One word that sums up North End's recent performances. Boring. That's another. What has happened to our early season form? Well the answer is the midfield have fallen apart, proved by Irvine's pointless experiment of Jones in midfield with Shumi against Watford. We have seen time and time again that Jones isn't capable in that role, the game passes him by.
The season started off promising with Shumi looking a good addition adding a much needed bite in the midfield that we have lacked since O'Neil. Months later we see that Irvine has wasted money on a player that can't tackle and doesn't like playing the simple pass. But don't worry lads, he's an international!
The other addition was Paul Parry. He got off to a flyer impressing pundits and fans. He opened his Preston league accoubnt against Barnsley and was frightening defences. Now, he's been injured we fear he may just be another crock that PNE have signed. He hasn't been back to his best just yet, but he's our most promising outlet in the midfield at the moment.
Sedgwick = Sedgwick. Boring, unentertaining, often we get what is required out of him, sometimes we don't.
Ross Wallace hasn't been the player he was since we signed him. He looks like he can't be bothered playing. He only looks interested when the ball is at his feet in the opponents final third, and whilst he is still dangerous, I don't think he's set up a Beast goal in quite a while. He also gives the ball away on numerous occasions whether this be through an honest mistake or he loses it with one of his fancy flicks. Not only does this aggrivate me but his obvious 'can't be arsed' attitude towards his defensive work is appaling. I know people defend him because he is a winger, but he played LEFT BACK for Sunderland for crying out loud.
Carter and Chaplow. Both excited me at the start of the season. I thought Chaplow's back on form and Carter is justifying his price tag. Chaplow has again lost his ability to pass the ball, and Carter has regained his ability to disappear. Two of the worst midfielders in the league and they are at PNE. Why did we miss out on Charlie Adam?
Barry Nic is a player I rate. He is the only one who shows a bit of passion when he pulls on the famous lilywhite shirt. He reminds me of Alexander in the way that in any situation he has a calm head, but he would also rather die than lose. This can be seen by him braking his rib against Coventry last season. He must be the most unfortunate bloke in the world though, braking his ribs and his leg in the little over a year he has spent here.
For the performances to improve, the midfield needs to improve. Honestly, I think it is their confidence in the back four that has led them to such dismal lows. Think of a car. The midfield is the engine. The defence is the petrol. If the petrol is leaking would you run the engine? The sale of St Ledger has brought this upon us. It may have brought us £4.5 mill, but it will cost us a lot more if we are to fall into League 1, a very possible outcome of this season.
