With the introduction of the new laws/rules of the game at the world cup which if any should be implemented in the Championship next season.

The five seconds for a throw in is a must for me.

Our players will need to spend all pre season putting it into practice though.

IFAB's law changes and updated guidance on protocols will be implemented across the game.

Probably best video out there so far to explain is this one:

As well as the 1 minute off the field for any player receiving treatment (vs the 30 seconds from the 25/26 season) - some exceptions but should probably see less players waving on the physio to delay the game.

The 5 seconds for Goal Kicks and Throw Ins is from the point they're seen to begin delaying the restart play, and goes off the referee's indication. Not from the moment they get the ball in their hands to throw it (await plenty of angry men who shout at clouds to get that one wrong from early August....)

Expect to see them implemented during pre-season too as everyone starts to get up to speed.

Cheers for that Jimmy.

I actually think they certainly have cut down on time wasting and helping keep the ball in play.

A few dodgy VAR decisions and the bloody three minute advert breaks thankfully wont impact us next season.

As always though, the main issue we will have in the championship is the consistency of the officials.

The throw in rule is a good one, also like that VAR can check a goal kick/corner, altohugh its odd they can only check if a corner has incorrectly been given a a goal kick and not the other way round
One thing the 100% needs scrapping and never bringing back, is the hydration (advert) break

Good idea in theory, but from what I have seen is the increase in foul throws, though not punished, and the increase in taking throws from nowwhere near where it went out, again not punished!

I would love to pose the question to a referee, '' Why do you allow blatant cheating in every single''?
I wonder if he would immediately understand where I was coming from. Probably not.
They seem more concerned in booking a player for taking his shirt off!

I can’t watch the video at the moment but I thought they were introducing the having to go off protocol for anyone who caused play to stop? I was really keen on that one, to stop the player with severe injuries laying on the floor until play magically stops by whatever means and he miraculously finds the cure for his ailment is play stopping so he can rant and rave at the referee like a toddler who’s had their fiddle toy confiscated.

It’s a good thread starter
Before we get into new rules I’d want the ones we currently have being applied properly and consistently- particularly goalkeepers falling on a ball and then taking what seems an age to distribute

There will always be a problem with the rules being applied properly. That is, a lot are subjective which is why we have the issues we see currently.

Interesting discussion—it's always good to stay informed about new laws and how they affect different industries.

oh I think those rules can help players to stay more viable during long games and it is a huge positive factor for us

The problem with the 5 second rule for throw ins is the way they’re contested in the EFL. In the Premier League and international football the opposition allow you to throw it to an unmarked player whereas below that level it’s a battle to get possession at most throw ins. We’ll see more throws aimlessly down the touch line I imagine

Regarding the 5 second rule to take a throw in, will this mean players will haf to run faster so they can gain more yards up the line 🤔 that's one thing I would love to see done away with

That would be an improvement on our current tactic of standing around until eventually someone runs forward and plays it awkwardly back to the thrower who is immediately under pressure.

Our throw-ins have been an amateur-hour joke for years and (while it was to be expected under Lowe) it's incredible that a proper professional coach such as PH has done feck all about it. 🤯

As for stopping time-wasting at throw-ins, it's a great idea in principle.

In practice, anything that relies on the ref subjectively deciding 'the point they're seen to begin delaying the restart play' (@baysidepne) is doomed to failure.

We'll see every trick in the book; different players stepping up/or no-one stepping up, pre-planned pantomime 'confusion', balls being collected slowly, excessively wiped down, pretending not to hear the ref, checking the position of the throw, etc etc.

Every time a ref does decide to award it to the opposition, there will be a massive fuss from players and the bench.

I fear refs will soon decide it's not worth the bother and it will be quietly dropped by Christmas, sadly. 🙁

Same with the 'cooling off period' being trialled in the lower leagues, which again sounds like a good idea.

In practice, Team A is getting on top on Team B and has real momentum, crowd rocking, etc.

Team B wins a free-kick and instead of getting on with it, manufactures a scuffle that leads to a five-minute break, by which time they've re-grouped, had a chat and killed both the other team's momentum and crowd noise.

Anything, anything, anything that teams can exploit to their own advantage, they will do.

Don't forget, we are talking about people who think feigning a serious head injury is perfectly legit if it stops an opposition attack.

Road to hell, good intentions, etc. 😕

Wouldn't surprise me if some of the rules are relaxed or even forgotten about by Christmas.

Just like when they started doing 10+ minutes of stoppage time, that got soon forgotten about and then also making subbed off players leave the pitch at the closest point, think that rule lasted about a month.
