Confirmed Play Offs extended to six teams (26/27)

Probably just strengthens the chances for the relegated clubs to get straight back at the first attempt.

I don’t think we’ll find a way to benefit from it.

I have copied this from the Norwich City MB
Just so we know what we are talking about... 3rd & 8th for the last 10 seasons...

24-25 Sheff U 90 - Millwall 66 - 24pts
23-24 Leeds 90 - Boro - 69 - 21pts
22-23 Luton 80 - Millwall 68 - 18pts
21-22 Hudd 82 - Blackburn 69 - 13pts
20-21 Brent 87 - Cardiff 68 - 19pts
19-20 Brent 81 - Millwall 68 - 13pts
18-19 Leeds 83 - Bristol C 70 - 13pts
17-18 Fulham 88 - Millwall 72 - 16pts
16-17 Reading 85 - Norwich 70 - 15pts
15-16 Brighton 89 - Cardiff 68 - 21pts

I suspect Millwall would have voted in favour

I know this will be good for us but a team that finishes 8th and goes up would get walked over every week in the prem, ruins the point of it as well.

As someone else on here noted - it depends on what is bought in the Summertime .
I don't think Burnley bought much, did they ?

I mean Burnley and Sheffield United finished top two a few seasons ago and got walked all over ever week.
As people have mentioned there isn't much between 8th and 6th apart from a few points.

And weirdly, unfancied Luton looked the most comfortable in the prem the season before last despite not quite being good enough. It's not an exact science who will do well.

If I put on a general football hat I have mixed feelings about this. I have softened them a bit over time though.

For us, it's a better chance at getting a lottery ticket, so that much is excellent. But the idea that a team that finishes 8th in the Championship can then compete in the allegedly most prestigious league in the world the following season seems a bit at odds with the premise of that league.

What it does do is give teams in 12th or 13th something to play for when all would otherwise be lost. We might even see teams in 12th all season suddenly go on a run and sneak 8th. Maybe that's us!

Sneak us in and I'll take it all day long.

So would a team finishing 6th, there's not usually much difference in it;

24/25
6th Bristol City (68)
8th Millwall (66) -2

23/24
6th Norwich City (73)
8th Middlesbrough (69) -4

22/23
6th Sunderland (69)
8th Millwall (68) -1

21/22
6th Luton Town (75)
8th Blackburn Rovers (69) -6

20/21
6th Bournemouth (77)
8th Cardiff City (68) -9

19/20
6th Swansea City (70)
8th Millwall (68) -2

18/19
6th Derby County (74)
8th Bristol City (70) -4

17/18
6th Derby County (75)
7th Preston North End (73)
8th Millwall (72) -3

16/17
6th Fulham (80)
8th Norwich (70) -10

15/16
6th Sheffield Wednesday (74)
8th Cardiff City (68) -6

16/17 and 20/21 being the outliers, otherwise in recent seasons the difference between 6th and 8th has been a couple of results.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Just another money make scheme.
May aswell just just split the table in the middle & have promotion & relegation play offs....😏

Interesting.

Never thought it’d happen. Gives us the best chance I suppose. Nice one, Riddler.

Though even an 8th place finish is probably beyond the club. Never mind winning the thing if we ever qualified.

And God help us if we ever do reach the Prem via an 8th placed fluke.

I think it's good for the entertainment side of it as it gives smaller teams a chance and I love the play-offs.

But something doesn't sit right with me that a team that finishes 8th could go up compared to a team that finishes 3rd.

It's also a tough argument to make as the same could be said about the team in 6th in the current system.
Yet people are happy with a team finishing 5th, at times 30 points behind City, qualifying for The Champions League Group Stage!

If you finish 3rd, 4th, then you should be beating a team in 8th.

And who is to say 3rd don't finish on 78 and 8th on 70 Points? Hardly a world of difference.

Won't concern PNE as we have only finished Top 8 once in 11 Seasons.

Maybe we could go over the same arguments for a fourth time when the new rule comes into effect?

Heaven forbid people discuss something that's now reality (as opposed to an EFL pipedream) with an updated perspective. We can always just close the forum when you're not online or show you only posts you're interested in?
