Matchday Thread PNE v Sheffield Wednesday | 18.07.26 | KO:1PM | Friendly - Euxton
If we play 4.4.2 then with current resources that is as good as we can get other than maybe McCann for Whiteman. But there would really be no back-up resource. We patently need another three to four signings just to get the squad back to where it was at the end of last season in purely numerical terms. In the possibility of no new signings and the fact we are seemingly playing a 4-4-2 I wonder if the starting lineup could look like this on the first day of the season.
Iversen
Offiah Storey Gibson Vukcevic
Small Whiteman Devine Moran
Lang Osmajic
Not sure how I feel about that in all honesty. Not a fan of 4-4-2 in general. Imagine if Mills is brought in he probably starts over Small as I don't think Heckingbottom knows how to use him and depending on how long Small is out for.

That’s one way to spin it. 😂
What essentially turned into two matches, with both sides changing their entire starting elevens at half time, ended with a 2-0 win in the first half for Wednesday and a 2-1 win for North End in the second half. Alfie Devine and Callum Lang both scored well-taken goals for the Lilywhites.

Something I would like to try, as late runs into the box from those midfielders, or runs in behind the defence from midfield can be great ways to make chances.England are trying a 4–1-4-1 tonight….I wouldn’t mind us trying that.
Not many teams use a 433/4141 nowadays. But it can allow for better passing angles. Most teams use 4231 nowadays as it gives you a no10 to be close to the striker in possession and press in a front two. And then two covering midfields. But would like us to try something different from the norm.
Unlikely though, as Heckingbottom's preferred back four formation does seem to be 442/4411 with a supporting forward.

Funny how trends come and go in football. Remember the Wenger days at Arsenal around 10-13 years ago. Started using a specialist #10 regularly and it became a thing. Not many teams use a 433/4141 nowadays. But it can allow for better passing angles. Then Pep came into England and started playing with a #6 and two eights. Then everyone copied it.
But seems nowadays people are going back to playing with a #10, often to get another man in the press and attacking the box.

God on highBring him home
Hear my prayer
In my need
You have always been there
He is young
He's afraid
Let him rest
Heaven blessed.
