Matchday Thread PNE v Stoke City - 9/03/24 - KO:3PM - Championship

So did I and they were a lot better than us.

And the stats show I was right👍🏻
The stats are stats. They show the maths. Only the maths .
According to your theory, it shows Stoke being twice as good as us. Which is nonsense.

I thought it was a very poor game but Stoke were marginally the better side. They were the more threatening and attack minded of the two sides and actually had the ability to pass and move!!!

The performance from us was akin to that in the horrendous 20 game run. Slow, ponderous, unimaginative and predictable. The amount of times Mads had the ball and was raising his arms for someone to move was ridiculous. Couple the above with a number of players underperforming and there really is only one outcome - defeat.

Ref watch - another week and another shocker, whats new?

The stats, statistics and damned lies. Not often I disagree with you PL but that's bull whiff. The chances they created were in the main powderpuff. They won the game via an own goal and a fluke.

People on here have been saying this for months
It's something that could be sorted but never is.
I’ve been saying it for at least a season , how could it be sorted apart from signing a better keeper I think the hierarchy at the club are quite happy to have a half decent keeper at the club with no proper back up , just the same as we are having no proper wing backs at the club despite employing a man who prefers ( no rely’s on playing a wing back system) despite the fact we haven’t really got two that are specifically suited to that role .
Unless some think Potts and Brady are adequate.

So our awful defending and performance had nothing to do with it . The best team won from what I saw

Stoke kinda deserved the three points. I say kinda because I thought they were the better side (in a shit game) but I also thought we should’ve had a penalty, which could’ve changed the game.

Overall it was gash!

We are a bit of a one trick pony, counter attack and high press specialists. Fortunately most of the teams in the division play to our strengths by overplaying out from the back. We are pretty clueless against teams who play like Stoke. The Rotherham game could be a season low point.

Most disappointing thing was the start. We barely touched the ball on first 5 mins and that set the tone.

Rotherham have given up this season, Lowe goes back into sacking territory if he dosen't win that game comfortably.

Where is the business sense, or even hint of a plan, which has you paying a couple of mill for a striker, the much much higher wages of some well acquired new players, some loans some not and at the same time going into another season without a single wing back in a side that plays the wing back system!! You have to say under those circumstances in this league, our position is amazing! Two points here though, the actual mentality of not having a bloody clue how to run a football side goes right to the top, with the fat controller, its common knowledge Risdale is bloody clueless both financially and football wise, some would say to criminal levels in both!!! But the second point is, knowing you have not been allowed to procure the type of players you need, how much of a one trick pony must you be, to still try and play to that system, anyway the result is very similar to watching a one legged man,in an arse kicking competition!!
The big question is, will the positions in question be addressed in the summer?

Spot on. Simply put, Schumacher had clearly learned from the Plymouth game in early season when they played into our hands (and even then were a bit unlucky to lose) and did a job on us today. Obviously, he and Gallagher are fully aware of how we play and Stoke completely stifled us; not for the first time, we had no answer.

Possibly we should have had at least one penalty, and both their goals has a touch of good fortune about them, but in truth, whilst we probably didn't deserve to lose, we certainly didn't deserve to win either.

The Whiteman slander is confusing me a bit. His style of play doesn’t suit the pitch but I don’t think he was particularly shite today, albeit not at his best.
So Whiteman can’t play on a crap pitch , bet Sir Tom is turning in his grave , he’s supposably a professional footballer. 🤔🥴

Brown is looking like a midfielder playing at full back, not his fault! Personally I think Woodman gets away with murder, he is a good shot stopper, but very weak in the air and his distribution is appalling!!
Woodman made a couple of decent, albeit fairly routine, saves but that was the worst display of kicking I've seen from a PNE keeper in many a season. His kicking has definitely deteriorated and it does make you wonder what Pollitt is doing with him in training every day

Teaching him how to stay on his line and never communicate with his defenders. It’s working well .👍

It's be nice if the club confirmed exactly how long his new contract is for. Today I thought he was as poor as anyone on the pitch. But obviously that's a lot of low bars to compare to.

A good summary. RL has no answer for teams who play an efficient press

On the BBC sport website Ryan Lowe is quoted as saying Millar crossed for our goal and McCann cleared the ball straight to one of theirs for the winner…..erm no
