Rank PNE's Best to Worst Managers

Rank PNE's Best to Worst Managers

Done. A really interesting exercise.

Moyes at the top is pretty much unanimous I believe, and obviously Davies, Neil and Grayson would be in the play offs.

Upper mid table: Craig Brown and Alan Irvine.

My bottom three were Heckingbottom, Westley and Ferguson. This means Phil Brown avoids relegation, which seems unfair as he was utter shite.
The bottom three WERE all utter shite.

Grayson had to pick up the pieces from Westley and got us promoted ffs.
There’s definitely an argument to be had that, on balance, he did better with us in his two seasons in the championship.

Finishing 5th and 3rd in L1 with the second biggest and then biggest budget respectively…

But yeah, very likeable and most importantly very competent after a few years of complete garbage.

McAvoy is easily above Lowe and Heckingbottom. Genuinely saved us from the drop, was given an absolute pittance the following summer, and when he was sacked we were still only 18th.

Ridsdale was clearly in charge of transfers and brought in Izzy Brown, Olosunde, Jamie Thomas, and Connor Wickham. The other signings were making Lindsay permanent and bringing in McCann.

The likes of Sinclair, Barkhuizen, Cunningham, and Bauer were practically finished, and we still had Rafferty & Earl in the match day squad.

McAvoy was an absolute fall guy for years of shocking recruitment.

I'd swap Phil Brown for Ferguson and there I'd have it. Brown's main job seemed to be pre-season when he made a rousing clarion-call speech to the fans to buy season tickets and support the club. It would have been music to Hemming's ears.

One out of six ain't good.

Can anyone tell me when this ( external ) poll closes ?
This poll is a great idea but does it take into account all the following interesting thread contributions in order that they may remind or inform others some facts or opinions which may be validly used to alter & revise their original 'placings' ?

I think that when people are judging the long list of incumbents in living memory, and there are some good and some bad, they all have had the same problem.

They have to a man managed with one hand tied behind their back.

I reckon that, especially the ones over the last 30 to 40 years, have found themselves at a point where they find themselves asking, "what the fuck am I doing working for these unambitious idiots" and the sack or a new opertunity came as a great relief.

They've all had that issue really since BAXI went. Someone mentioned Simmo having to make do with Pergyl and Ricketts mid season when team were in the top 2. He said on a few podcasts he'd agreed a loan deal to get in Danny Murphy from Spurs but it fell through on the finance side. Then a few months later Nugent leaves and is effectively replaced by Karl Hawley!

Actually Irvine was backed significantly looking back at things.

Grayson aswell but then plenty of guys like Beckford wanted to play for him so he clearly had a pull.

AN, well documented.

Davies wanted Stephen Pearson and then signed him for Derby six months later. Probably not a stretch to think he also wanted someone like Steven Howard to lead the line. Had to make do with Marcus Stewart as late season loan who was probably on the decline at that point.

There was another player as well. James Scowcroft (who we didn't sign) but we was heavily linked and he had decent seasons at championship level.

@monky1234

How can you justify that non win percentage facepalm indeed? 🤦😂
You've got him below two managers with a worse point per game record. One whose record was barely above 1.00 (1.02) and a big reason we were relegated, along with his Dad.

And the other a complete nut job.

Some serious recency bias going into some of these votes if either of those two are above Heckingbottom in anyone's list 😄

I think that it is fair to say that even when we say someone has been well backed, what we are saying is that someone has been well backed by our standards.

I suppose that to be fair you have to say that the so called for play rules in regards to our income probably put us at a disadvantage.

Have to say though all the financial stuff is beyond me, and I don't know if we had spent the little extra on certain players we missed out on would have put us in a points deduction scenario?

Wouldn't know where to start putting them in any order.

The way that I look at these things is who gave me the most pleasure and most where average to poor, with a couple right shite.

So, I can't look further than Davies and Moyes, enjoyed my football under these guys, walked along Moor Park Ave with a spring in my step.

Neil and Grayson would get mentioned in despatches though, Grayson specially for a great day at Wembley.

Grayson then established us in the Championship with a team that could grind out results as opposed to the currrnt day when we have been managing to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Just my perception. At least it’s all firmly in the past xx 🙂

McGrath tops them all.

Nobody mentions Beck or Peters either.

Don't know how anyone can have anyone other than Ferguson bottom. Totally useless manager, who, not content with having us propping up the league, guaranteed we went down as he stood by and watched his tosser of a dad and his useless lapdog pulled all their loanees

Pity it couldn't include all managers, but I suppose it wouldn't be practical for anyone under a certain age to rank someone like Alan Ball. He'd definitely be in my top 5, but would probably end up mid table at best due to the age of voters.

I still had to go second bottom. Westley was another planet of dogshit.
