Matchday Thread Rotherham Utd v PNE - 23/09/23 - KO:3PM - Championship

Yeah he's a nuisance and was more than capable for us. The fee west ham paid in hindsight looks awful but the improvements he's showed in the 18 months before where what they paid for and they hoped he could go on further. Just he was his finished product at that point.

A battering ram striker with a bit of skill, pace and power. Not elite but played to his strengths as the main man you'd get 15 goals a season from him at this level
Hugill has played for several championship teams under several different managers and has never scored 15 goals in a season. What makes you think he can start doing that now at the age of 31?

A simple question.

If our centre backs were that good, why would we need to play 3 of them, with 2 DMs in front of them?
I agree with most on here that the 3 central defenders aren’t the best players in their positions in the league but the team plays to their strengths which is why we have 2 DMs in there, and the 4 of them who’ve played so far are a very long way from being the worst.

Ledson must have made a record number of blocks so far this season and that obviously helps, but our back 3 have stood up to be counted so far and have come out on top in just about every game.

Lindsay has also contributed massively to 4 of our points just with his 2 goals,

I’m buzzing with this start and just cannot even think about finding negatives.

Yep. Our centre backs make loads of interceptions and clearances because we spend all fucking game defending. Doesn't make them Maldini.

Lindsay has actually had an ok season so far, but not sure why people are ignoring the fact he has quite clearly been at fault for our last two goals. I wonder if Bambo Diaby (or Pat Bauer, for that matter) would've been afforded the same tolerance.

How we he ‘clearly’ at fault for the Rothertham goal. He would have cleared the ball had McCann not come back and got in the way.

Also we don’t spend all fucking game defending. We spend portions of it when we are leading.

Finally, no one is saying our defenders are maldini. People are saying our defenders are having a good season so far and considering we have the best defence and have got 20 points from 8 points I don’t see how people can argue with that. Lindsay is having a good season so far not an ‘ok’ one. I thought he made a mistake v Birmingham but after he swapped to the middle was excellent for the rest of the game.

And why are people still going on about bambo diaby. He’s shit, now left and plays for the worst side in the division. Lindsay is miles better.

Agree with you Ribbleton, if anyone was at fault it was McCann, he definitely got in Lindsays way, he should have gone goalside to block Hugill and not his own man.

Lots of that reply is bollocks but it's too lengthy to dissect all of it, so I'll just deal with the worst part.

RL even said in his interview post match that Lindsay was at fault for the goal, and that he knew it himself. He made up for it, which is all he could do. One thing Lindsay does offer is a good aerial threat.

Lots of that reply is my opinion. If my opinion is bollocks then so is yours. I didn’t say he wasn’t partly to blame. He just wasn’t ‘clearly at fault.’ McCann must take some of the blame as well.

‘All we do all fucking game is defend.’ Yes we did loads of defending on Saturday. 🫤

And if you think bambo diaby is a better defender than Lindsay then you need help. Calamity.

Liam Lindsay should have headed the ball out for a throw in, once the ball fell for Hugill and he took it away and scored a brilliant goal

I'd agree. Some defenders could have turned their way out of that corner but Lindsay isn't one of them. Safety first is fine, he judged it wrong.

And then McCann's slightly headless chicken response didn't help matters. Between them they should have cleaned it up easily.

Fair play to Hugill though. Great goal but we all know he has that in him.

As I've said as the main man played to his strengths he's good for 15 goals or so

Middlesbrough half his games where coming from the bench. Norwich and West Brom the same if not worse ratio to starts.

Us, QPR and Rotherham where hes started games and been the focal point he's around 1 in 3. It's not a clinical return but for what he offers beyond goals its decent enough.

How is it that on most occasions when a team concedes a goal it’s invariably down to a defensive error, but when they score it’s usually down to great attacking play......😂😂

He’s at 1 in 5 for Rotherham this season.

Hugill was good for us but let's be honest the money we got for him from West Ham was way over odds for what he was worth. In truth I still think Mr Moyes was using West Ham's money to palliate his own conscience for earlier having left us mid-season for the Everton job. Doesn't quite make up for the 64 Cup Final but there we are...

Now let's focus on ourselves and see if we can get a win this coming Saturday that might return us to the automatic positions and maybe even top spot.

I don't take that Moyes idea seriously at all. Someone else above him will have approved the spend. West Ham took a relatively cheap January punt by premier league standards and perhaps thought Hugill could be polished up a bit more and used as a squad player but in the end they barely gave him a kick. Odd, but thats how it goes.

Well whatever - it is still a nice thought especially if you can remember sitting in a chair near the eastern edge of Preston shortly after 4.40pm on Saturday 2 May 1964 with your eyes brimming with tears.

But, as I said, time to start focussing on this coming Saturday.

Aye I think it was a mixture of that and a few things:
  • Urgently needing to replace Diafra Sakho and Andre Ayew
  • Making sure they had a player who could score goals in the Championship if they were relegated
  • Andy Carroll was probably injured
  • Other than Carroll and Javier Hernandez, the only other striker they had was Toni Martinez who was only 20 and who they didn't end up playing

Despite bringing Hugill in, what they ended up doing was playing Marko Arnautović up front instead because he could do all the physical work that Moyes liked (and was a better player than Hugill)

Also Crystal Palace were interested and were a relegation rival.

One of the best coaches I ever played for said ‘all goals are the result of ‘ mistakes’ he also said ‘good defenders come in twos.’ He was right on the mistakes and wrong on the twos.. McCann and Lindsey messed up and they both made the ‘mistake’😉 .. ..

Lindsay is the main man in our defence. He wins headers and generally dominates aerially against his opponents. He’s great at distributing the ball and RL has always preferred him to Bauer because of this. His lack of speed is made up for with his anticipation of play, which is fine in the centre as he has 2 other defenders covering but he does look vulnerable when played out wide.
All players have faults and weaknesses which surface from time to time but our back three have been more consistent than most others in the Championship in the last 2 seasons. We’ve got a solid base from which to build our new more attacking style from. Long may it continue.
