Smith Vs Evans

Smith Vs Evans

Ched was stealing a wage not far off from when he signed his last extension.

Smith was League 1 bound until we stepped in. He was a cheap option which allowed funds elsewhere.

However, when Ridsdale bragged at the money we saved compared to Moore at Wrexham, for in his opinion the same standard of player, that highlights how badly we need a change at those who run the club.
And therein lies the major issue. Ridsdale’s opinion on a player should be absolutely nothing to do with recruitment.

Yeah he's been poor so far but he's also being expected to run onto balls and act like a complete striker, he isn't being used as the target man he is. He should be playing better but needs to be played to his strengths. Yesterday was madness trying to slip him in behind and having him so far behind the ball

Michael Smith is 34 next month and has spent the vast majority of his career playing in league 1 and 2. As recently as 17-18 he was playing for Bury and scoring 1 goal in 19 games for them.

Then he had that great spell at Rotherham which showed he could be a good top end league 1 targetman and also do o.k at bottom end of championship.

Same for Sheff Weds. In 23/24 when they had their great escape he scored the grand total of 4 goals in 31 games.

So I'm not really sure what people are expecting.

He wouldn't have needed to have been signed if Will Keane's form and fitness hadn't completely collapsed in last 12 months. I think more questions should be directed at Keane personally, getting a new deal and being pretty much useless as a squad option since.

Jebbison also already having fitness issues isn't a great sign either so Smith has already played far more than expected anyway so I think it's unfair if he's already becoming a scapegoat especially when the actual start has been far better than expected.

It is like moaning about Andy Smith or Simon Lynch when both were very much fourth choice in the era of Fuller, Healy and Cresswell.

Also the factor of we're having to bring him on because we don't have any other options. I thought yesterday suited him but there's definitely a feel of he's our only first team striker on the bench and we need to get one on.

I don’t particularly rate him but thought we looked (marginally) better once he and Armstrong came on yesterday.

If your a striker, surely you have to carry some kind of threat.
Looking at his record there, it seems like he's carried a next to zero threat throughout much of his career.
So if we've bought him because he offers something different to the rest of the strikers then fair enough but that "something different" needs to be visible.
I've not really seen it yet apart from a half decent showing at Loftus Rd.
If your gonna be a nuisance or a foil for Osmajic then at least try jumping off the ground properly for starters.
Really hope he comes good but I won't hold my breath

Not been impressed with him so far and thought he was poor yesterday, but then collectively all the outfield players were below par against a well organised Bristol City and a ref who stuck to his game plan of pissing everyone off.

Ched was past his best even when he signed for us but even in the Plymouth game last season he offered more than Smith did yesterday and Ched brought players like Riis into the game more.

The fact they're both being compared shows where the actual problem lies and it's another Ridsdale issue.

If Smith was our 5th choice striker I wouldn't be that worried, the fact he's our 3rd when everyone is fit and could well end up starting games by default when Milly gets banned and Jebbison injures himself again shows how important the signing of Iversen is as it's given us the chance to bank some points in the early part of the season before the form inevitably tails off to under a point a game.

We are short in the striker department for sure.
Hopefully there is nothing inevitable about us landing less than a point a game though.
Dobbin and Devine can perhaps chip in with a few goals.

How many appearances in last four years (including cameos as sub?) and how many goals. How appearances for Smith so far? Let’s do comparison when appearances are about the same … too soon to judge yet.

Wasn't there a guy on here wanting us to pay circa £20k p/w for a new striker to win us two points in a game instead of paying a GK that amount to hopefully save us one....?

I thought Smith was lazy when he came on at Pride Park and that was disappointing given the effort everyone else was putting in.

Liked him against Ipswich when situation was similar but he doesn't look like much of a goal threat.
