Smith Vs Evans

Smith Vs Evans

I prefer Jebbison as the physical option up to now, who offers rapid pace and lots of mobility. Won't win many headers but makes it difficult for the defender. His offside awareness needs serious work though.

I'd persevere with a front two of him and Dobbin while Osmajic is banned. Think they showed signs of good link up against Wrexham.

Smith as 4th choice, and coming on for the last 15/20 certainly isn't a bad option though.
Jebbison has been absolutely awful, he doesn’t look like he has a goal in him.

Like Bambi, but with pace.

Ched was still dogshit and would have remained on zero goal contributions.

The bedwetting after every minor setback on here is utterly embarassing
embarrassing for who? its my opinion and i'm entitled to it -I'm not embarrassed so please enlighten me to who is and why they should be?
additionally, the opinion is based on seeing him offer very little in multiple games and not bedwetting as you put it, Ched had fire in his blood, and could control a ball and had a footballing brain- he gave defenders problems.

Again, last night - i'd rather have an aging Ched for 45 mins than smith for 90

Respectfully, you are talking absolute bollocks.

Ched did literally almost nothing for two seasons. Found his level now at League 2.

Smith was never going to be prolific but has contributed 3 goals already, only bettered by Osmajic and the difference is a penalty goal.

I keep seeing and hearing talk about how he didn't win a header all night, I'd suggest people watch the goal back...also 7/7 aerial duels won if people bother to check instead of just assuming.

Absolutely should not be relying on him to start every game but let's not all just pretend he's not a useful option and something we've lacked for ages.

agree, Ched had past his best it but I think Smiths level is also league 2 - would Ched have scored 3 with the current players around him -likely. dont forget this team is much better creatively than the ones that Ched played in.

Can’t fault his workrate, but as a player I’m getting major Stockley-vibes. In that whilst he’s a massive lump, he offers very little as a target man. Not reliable enough aerially, when he does win duels the headers rarely find a teammate (which is as much system as it is his fault) , he’s awful at trapping the ball and holding up play, and understandably looks like he’s towing an oil tanker

That being said, some heavy revisionism going on with Ched last year. He was literally making up the numbers but not surprising our fanbase look back wistfully. Passion merchant at the end

Disagree but each to their own. Physically finished at this level and had been since his neck injury.

The Ched from the seasons prior is a different story. Was a decent option for us.

This is where I am. Smith is average with his feet, but very good in the air. We should've used him far more than we did last night.

A carthorse, offers nothing. One of the worse strikers I have seen at Deepdale was one Tony LORMOR who we signed in swap deal with David Reeves. Smith beats him hands down. A terrible display against a debutant and patched up defence he was bullied the whole game. All on Hecky last night and he needs to do something Tuesday to restore faith

He's better than he's given credit for. Doesn't fit our best style of play, with Devine and Dobbin and Small trying to be intricate on the floor. Looks like he gets in the way there which gives a really bad impression.

Good option to have, and he's popped up with goals. Just isn't ideal to have him as a starter.

Remind me the sequencing. Did we sign Smith first and then couldn’t afford Gudjohnssen?
Or went cold on the latter when dazzled by the headlights of a cheap Smith. Might prove to be a costly decision

Can't imagine the free signing of Smith had much to do with our unwillingness to spend a couple of million on a first choice striker.

My personal theory regarding all the striker links is that they were just enquiries on the off chance our asking price for Milly was met and he moved on.

He's a disruptive, annoyance in the air, not good, can't direct a header to save his life. At least he's bagged a few though.

This

I don't think anyone at the time of Smith's signing was anticipating him starting as much as he has been, or at the very least felt it was the type of signing that should be starting as regularly. I didn't think it was a bad signing at the time (although obviously would have preferred McBurnie, Moore or someone younger). My mind hasn't changed in that I still think ideally he isn't starting and exists as a useful bench option.

We definitely needed a target man. There were occasions where it was obvious we lacked one, but, so far this season our system generally hasn't played to his strengths. The one criticism that gets me is when he's criticised for being slow. It's not something that he can do anything about, nor would it be playing to his strengths to expect him to win foot races. He does win his headers more than people seem to think though. It's no coincidence he looked better after the subs at Millwall when we went to a back four and he wasn't isolated as he had players picking up second balls.

Our injury crisis and the club not providing adequate cover for Osmajic's suspension has pretty much meant he has started and will start more games than we expect.

This debate just epitomises the standards we’ve been made to endure under this hierarchy tbh. A bloke who’s bodies shot to bits or a league one journeyman.

There’s no debate, neither offer anything to a team who challenges the top 6 in this division in a month of Sundays.

Imagine if we’d have offered a competitive wage to someone like McBurnie, I’d argue we’d be comfortably top two.

IOM and Ridsdale out, despite the start.
