Summer 2026 - Transfer Rumours and Discussions.

Personally think an out and out LB is more of a priority than a CB. Vuk is great going forward but pretty crap defensively, definitely more of a wingback. Hughes should be absolutely nowhere near LB.
We need both. Us lacking at LB doesn't gloss over the fact that the CBs are dog shit. Gibson could be decent if he can re-find his form, Offiah is never a CB, and the other two...Jesus Christ.

If the plan is a back 4 going forward, then Hughes should have been released, and we should have been aggressively trying to move Lindsay on.

They're still here because they're probably nice blokes who never complain, that's it. The culture here isn't remotely focused on success.

So we just shrug and carry on then?

Nope, I just don't get why Pollitt takes the blame for Iversen's mistake. That's just deflecting from the actual problem.

Yesterday wasn't good and I do think there were problems in our system yesterday, but it wasn't set pieces nor was it the goalkeeping coach. Selecting Pol instead of Offiah was clearly a problem, as was playing a shape which exposed our CBs and playing a collection of players that couldn't provide support in attack.

We also lacked any drive and ability to pick up second balls, because we went with two deep central midfielders who don't carry the ball well. Neither of them looked to make themselves available for the ball much.

A lot of our issue is ultimately a quality one and it's telling we got better when that quality came off the bench.

IMO We need more defenders because the ones we have just aren't quick enough or good enough on the ball to work in this back four. No coach is going to make Lindsay, Storey or Hughes quicker. Equally we've had years of Ali McCann not getting better on the ball, at some point we have to look at the player rather than the coaching, because he's on his third manager now. He's the consistent bit.

So no we don't "shrug our shoulders and carry on", but equally we don't make up reasons to blame people for other people's mistakes. Both are counter productive.

We keep signing players to suit a new style, or we change shape to compensate for what we have (which would likely be a back three with our defenders).

Scoring 4 that would be a novelty, apart from Erabi can’t say any of the other forwards covered themselves in glory ?
Never scored 4 in a game under Heckingbottom, in all competitions. Probably 100 games? Only scored 3 in a game 8 times, 2 of them coming against last season's Sheff Wednesday.

Even Lowe managed a few decent scorelines.

Having Clarke available from now on should help with this at least.

I think a fully integrated Leroy and McConnell should help us here too. I don't think the long term goal is to play Thompson and McCann as our main central midfield pairing.

This is honestly the main difference between teams in this league. There's plenty of good managers in the league but it is just the quality of players that make the difference. This is why I'm not too bothered by yesterday's result as we just need to make sure we get the players in. If we make all the signings we purportedly want to make, we should be in a much better position.

Vuk will be a good bench option and with Hughes he either needs to be dropped or played as a LCB.

Its just time we stop allowing ourselves to get embarrassed by other teams and actually strengthen our defensive options.

The other thing is I don't think we can rely on Vukcevic playing week in and week out. He's good but has his weak games and isn't always fit. We need a proper rotation option. With CB, I'd sooner player Hughes at CB over Lindsay.

Firstly, that’s one set piece, and shouldn’t be used to extrapolate into a blanket statement.

Secondly, is it ‘pissing around with it’, or is it setting the ball so that there is a better angle to hit the free kick? Did you say Gally ‘pissed around with it’ when he did it and scored, twice?

I doubt it. So we didn’t ’piss around with it’. We just hit the wall with a free kick from 25+ yards out, which isn’t exactly outside the realms of possibility is it?

It wasn’t a set piece. It was a poor cross from open play.

Yes, agree, which is what I’ve been saying for over a year.

Getting desperate if you're having to take a Time Machine back to 2019 to attempt to make a wanky point.

And we last conceded 5 in 2002 against Aston Villa. Unlikely to happen this year either, despite our problems at the back
Brentford with Ivan Toney at Deepdale would like a word (McAvoy).

As would Wimbledon at Deepdale (C Brown).

As would Spurs at Deepdale when 'Arry was the manager of Spurs.

That is three off the top of my head.

Lost 5-1 against Watford at Deepdale in December 2023 under Lowe.
